Hi All
I haven't been on here for a while but has anyone had any problems with their tyre pressure sensor ?
I was on the outside lane of the motorway on Saturday when I heard a beep and a warning came up telling me to check the tyres. I pulled over at the next services and checked the pressures and they were all fine. I have the warning every time I start her up so will have to get it looked over at VW.
Almost 6 months in and still look forward to driving her every day btw

Press and hold the button on the inside of the glovebox to reset it (newer models) or down by the gear stick (older models). It just a bit random I think, may have never been set at the PDI.

Great- thanks for your help ! I didn't even know that button was in the glovebox
Is it quite a common thing to have to re-set it ?
Thanks again

^ Was common on the mk5's too. I bet your dealer had not set it up

I think the GTi has the proper TPMS which means it has tyre pressure sensors in each wheel. I just have the cheaper Flat Tyre Indicator for £35, it works great. When the light comes on you stop and visually check the tyres and they all look ok. You get home and check the pressures and 3 are at 37psi and 1 is 33psi. You top it up and the light is still on. You press the Set button in the glovebox and it goes off.
Its nothing to do with the dealer setting it up, I've hear loads of problems with the TPMS going off and there's no pressure difference.

I've had to reset mine 3 times but they have all been legitimate times when one of my tyres was under inflated.
Last time being when I had an alloy changed and the fitter didn't inflate the tyre back to what it was previously.

I know the GTI's abroad have this but do the UK ones?
As its still an option for £35 in the UK GTI

Major major problem in the US we dont have the reset button and our car thinks we need 99PSI. My car is having problems with it now for the second time

Sadly not...just the same ABS sensor derived measurement based trigger.
No sensors, as the Audis have.

I wondered if they randomly go off as the tyre wears down so the radius is changing.
What I do now, is when I check the tyre pressures so that I know they are correct, I reset the system. That way I get less false arms (only had one mind in 7500miles) and I am only really relying on it to tell me theres a flat.
Do you really trust a system that much you never check your tyres anyway?
p.s. the colder weather we are having means the tyre pressures will drop a little too.

I'm just wondering what difference the tyre radius will make to the pressure?

^^^ The TPMS on UK cars works on the ABS sensors to detect changes in the rolling radius of the wheels.

OK Steve, but how does the ABS system measure the rolling radius?

OK Steve, but how does the ABS system measure the rolling radius?
One revolution of a wheel gives x number of pulses detected by the ABS sensor...if all wheels give the same number of pulses per revolution when checked against the stored default (reset, once the pressures are set) then all tyres are at the same pressure...if one tyre goes flat, then it gives less pulses than the other 3 per revolution, or different value to the stored 'reset' value (over single or multiple revolutions, however the system measures it) it triggers the warning.
Same method for detecting wheelspin to activate XDS/traction control...same again for detecting locked wheels under braking etc.
Same principle again for launch control on aftermarket traction control systems or ECUs.

Of course, should have realised that, DOH!. Being pedantic, just one small point, wouldn't a flat tyre give more pulses than the others due to the reduced radius? [More turns to go same distance]

Well spotted...yes, it would.
Difference in pulses being the key...once a pre-determined difference is met, it triggers the warning light and noise.

We have the same set-up on the Aus version cars as well. sometimes its operation is a little random, I have had the warning go off after a bit of wheel spin, checked the tyres pressures and all was fine. Other times its gone off, there was between 2 - 6psi difference in the tyres.

Lol- it wouldn't surprise me !! Since I reset it, no more false alarms which is good but I did notice some very small stone chips on the 18" alloys when I checked the tyres... doh !! but can't say I'm that shocked juding by the state of the UK's roads

Little dab of lacquer on a cocktail stick to seal the hole, let it dry. Polish then jetseal109 them maybe some wax too.

I'll give it a go. Thanks mate- as always !!
