It has been like this from new and until now I did not think of mentioning it.
I find it quite unsightly.
The whole area of the plastic seems a bit deformed, as if they have applied too much force to screw-in the number plate.
Any one else with this problem?

I've seen a Golf TDi which has a smaller numberplate area and it seems fine.

Screw in the number plate
Mine is on with double sided sticky foam..

But is the area wavy?
-
No, looks fine
-
Then, to the dealer I go to sort it out. Bloody unsightly.
-
Just been out to check mine, perfectly flat! I take it you mean the painted area that the number plate/holder fixes on top of?

Yes, that's it. Mine is very wavy, as if too much force has been applied to fix the number plate.
-
Photo please.
Mine is flat and smooth.

I'll try, but it's difficult to catch it with a camera unfortunately.
I'm off to see the beautiful Czech VW Warranty Manager, Petra, tomorrow Ist thing in the morning.
-
Yep. Mine's been damaged by over tightening.
Checked the white GTi around the corner and it is fine.
-
Say hello to Petra for me, she sounds nice!! Hope you get it sorted

Saw her  this morning. She agrees that it has to be fixed and the damage is due to overtightening. Off to the bodyshop this Saturday for them to have a look and decide what has to be done. Never bloody ends.
-
{runs out to look at his screwed on number plate}
I will have to have a look at mine in the morning but mine does seem to go in alittle below were they screwed the plate on. :undecided:
-
When I got my car both plates were fixed with double sided sticky tape. I left my house on 2 occasions to head off to work only to come home and find the number plates lying in the road.
Went to the dealers and they kindly screwed them on for me but not too tightly as there is no wavyness at all, at least I can drive around knowing I am not doing so illegally
Gizzy

Well darling, one of has been well screwed and unfortunately it's me in this case.
Really looks bloody awful as agreed by Petra  my VW Warranty Manager.
It's so annoying. It will mean a full day or two at the bodyshop with me driving a Polo with a brown paper bag over my head. Bloody monkeys.
Pretty hacked off, to say the least.

Strange, always used double sided foam and never had any fall off even the front curved one.
I remember trying to take one off one time when the number plate had got water ingress and I had to slice it off with cutting wire as there was no way they were coming off by pulling
-
You've been lucky! the stickiness on mine was all gone so I don't know how they had stayed on for as long as they did to be honest.

Exactly where you say. We are probably the only two with this.
Showed it to SteveP yesterday and he felt it looked a bit unsightly.
Very annoying.
I'm going to get it fixed at some stage, I hope.
Off to work now, a bit late!
-
I know what you meen now i see it. I have took a couple photos with my phone but cannot upload them at work.
I guess its when they drilled the holes for the plate. In my case Wayside strikes again.
I nerver noticed it before but i guess i just put it down to the angle of that section distorting the light.
Only cure is a bumper repaint  Which i don't feel happy about due to known my luck iot would turn out a paint colour mismatch and broken and marked who knows what.
-
In the car in a traffic jam!
Going to the bodyshop on Sat and sse what they say. Warranty manager feels it could be done as a localised job. Hope so as otherwise all the probs you've cited. Speak later traffic is moving and I have to start the engine!

I will try and get better photos to show what i think we both meen if the sun ever comes out and my phone can actually record what i can see!! Its very noticable when walking towards the rear of the car. You can see how it distorts any image reflection.
-
Snoops: EXACTLY as in your pictures. Bloody cowboys.
PS: I think mine is a bit worse.
-
That panel is very flexy. Maybe heat also distorted it, just a thought?
I tried to get a distance photo but it does not show it very well but i can see it with my eyes. :undecided:

Just been out myself to get a distance photo too! You're right, does not show up very well!

OT: Did you get a new defuser for the rear? If so do you know the price.

Rear Diffuser/Spoiler ------- £58.02 + VAT - W5K6 807 521 H9 B9
Toe hook cover --------------- £5.98 + VAT - W5k6 807 441 B9 B9
I am still waiting to get the other painted one from my ex-Honda dealer. They are really dragging their feet.
-
Thanks.
-
I went to the bodyshop to show the deformed portion of the rear bumper.
I'll have to go back on Monday to show it to the guy who reforms the plastic parts.
However, it seems that I might need a new rear bumper.
-
Its what i thought :undecided:
-
Its what i thought :undecided:
I am in two minds as to whether I should take the plunge.
What do you think? :undecided:
-
Up to you but since you have fresh paint on the front i would be less concerned about having the back done too.
Me I think im going to be lazy and just try and ignore it on mine.

Mine is pretty unsightly so I am prone to take the plunge. The Warranty Manager is adamant I get it fixed.
-
Went to the bodyshop this morning.
They are going to try and flatten the panel and will be able to make it look much, much better and as near perfect as possible.
I've known the quy who is going to do the job over many years. He is a New Zealander and used to work for Rolls-Royce. He is quite brilliant at what he does which makes me pretty happy with the situation.
-
Well you're going to love this .....
It will cost £350 to repair the area that is wavy around the Number Plate area, even after they assured me it would be a local job costing around £150 or so..
First they said it needed a new bumper.
Then they said it was a local rectification job.
Now they say that there is no need for a new bumper but the bumper will have to be removed and completely re-painted.
I told them that I did not want this done as it is overkill.
So now they are deciding whether it can be a local job.
As I am not paying it should not matter, but I feel in this case less is more.
Mad!
-
If it was mine , it would have to be a new bumper

It seems that a lot of new bumpers are not a 100% perfect fit. So a new drama could easily ensue!
Trying to avoid this whilst still trying to get the bumper fixed.

I'll shoot you or myself or the both of us.

No not really mate, maybe if i wasn't living in london might do it?? I am really nervious about my car being put right just hope they dont F*** it up?? They said going to take the bumper off lets hope they line back up properley??

Well from my recent experience and from what Petra has told me, it can never be as good as the factory fit. They use a special machine to hold the whole bumper when fitting it so that it does not twist.
My gaps do not match each other with the front wings. Close, but not as before. It's going back on Friday for another tweak.
-
Stop it man, your doing my head in, I will be all over it like a rash when its done now!!
-
Am1w You need a new bumper as trying to repair that the way it flexes will probably never be right.
-

I am going to leave it to them. I've had it with my bumpers. First the front, now the rear and the front. Whatever next.

I pray to all the gods that all will be well with the fit and finish. Especially the fit.

I do keep thinking of adding a black transfer in that bit behind the number plate.
-
I do keep thinking of adding a black transfer in that bit behind the number plate.
Thought of covering the whole space with a huge Number Plate with the EU Flag on the left and the GB flag on the right. I wonder if this would be legal. Look quite off-the-wall me thinks!
-
Well, the supplying garage refuses to pay for the new bumper and do not accept that they damaged it.
I also feel that this may open up a can of worms as the tailgate and rear quarter panels will also have to be blended in. Red is a pig of a colour for paint issues, unfortunately.
But I've insisted that something must be done to improve the mess.
Not one bit pleased.

Stick to your guns, it is not good enough for them to try to wipe their hands of it.
I would say it is pretty obvious it was done at time of fitting the number plate, too heavy handed with the screwdriver.
Good luck

You swine , I got my car back its excellent job, no problems mate. The best thing no more stone chips yeeeehh!! Resprayed all round the bumper with thick coat of laquer brilliant all lined up properley. Enjoy

Really happy it has all worked out .
My drama continues. Found someone who can apply some gentle heat to the bumper to reduce the waviness without damaging the paint. Cost £50+VAT.
I undid both screws which were 3/4" long! Seems to have released a bit of the pressure and now it looks less distorted. :undecided:
Am now dealing with the supplying dealer in Telford.
-
Sounds like the screws are a bit of overkill (to long)? Get a picture on here if you can? Hope it's worked out ok!!
-
Here it is.
It's much worse in reality, I promise.

Bad pain in the shoulder after the injection, work dramas (nearly solved), credit card was cloned and £1000 removed from account today (bank will refund), decided not to go on holiday due to shoulder pain, dramas with VW Telford (they refused to pay for the fix initially). I could go on and on.
One bit of good news: painted rear spoiler ready for collection (tomorrow). At last.
-
God, I don't even get the posting right now.
Thanks for asking my friend.
-
OMG , what C**** 1k taken off your card (nightmare) Sounds like its hit you the 13th??? Hope you get the car sorted though mate!!

Hope so Steve. Can it get any worse? I'll know tomorrow.
They spent 85p(!) as a start, then £440 at next, then £200 in a booze mart, £355 in some sort of club!
Bloody shoulder still aches like buggery.
-
I had the same with a credit card a couple of years ago. It's a right pain getting the money back, reissue of credit cards etc, but it does all work out in the end. Sorry to hear about that, hope you get sorted out ok.
re - Very quiet on here tonight??
- it was Friday night and we were in the pub, where else mate! (Car locked up in the garage!)

Thank you. The bank has already refunded the money and a new card is on the way. They are quite effecient.
Bumper still driving me insane.
Now they say:
(1) It could be a faulty bumper but this cannot be as VW would never release a car with this problem.
(2) It could have distorted when they drilled the holes for the Number Plate, not when they screwed it on.
(3) I must have been hit by another car! O yeah, exactly in the Number Plate area! I think not you muppets.
Petra , the Inchcape Chiswick Warranty Manager does not think it is a warranty problem and has referred it back to VW Inchcape Telford.
The bodyshop wants to replace the whole bumper and spray the boot lid and the rear quarter panels. Cost £350+VAT.
I think this is overkill and can't begin to imagine all the problems that will ensue.
Let's see how things pan-out on Monday. I am so busy at present and this is just becoming a problem I can do without.
-
Now why can't they use this technique?

So sorry to hear about all your troubles, these dealers really are a bunch of sh******s they f**k up your car and then don't want to know.
Hope you feel better soon and glad you got your money back.
-
Am1w, Yours looks like mine does
-
Snoops: So sorry to hear this. It is really not nice to the eye.
It must be a manufacturing fault or could it?
Could it be due to the drilling causing stress in the plastic?
Had a call from VW Inchcape West London Customer Services. I told the guy my woes. He is going to escalate it to the General Manager. I just want someone to take responsibility and get it fixed.
I await with bated breath.
-
If you push on it, you notice how thin and flexy it is? Im guessing if you push and drill (creating heat) it in theory may distort.
-
If you push on it, you notice how thin and flexy it is? Im guessing if you push and drill (creating heat) it in theory may distort.
... and that is what has happenned, I feel. You can see the strees lines on either side of the plate, equally distributed.
I think we must be the only ones with this problem.
-
Probably as most dealers stick the plates on.
-
Here is the picture again.
The circles are waviness in the plastic and the 'line' is the stress line. It is exactly the same on the other side.

BTW Snoops: The rear diffuser is painted and ready for fitting. The Honda dealer will do for me. Still have not seen it!
-
If you look at mine on page 3 its the same. :undecided:
-

Do you also have the stress line/crease?

My 3rd photo shows how the image is distorted best. Its more a wavy to behind the number plate.
-

Mine is flat as a pancake behind the number plate. The two depressions and crease lines are outside the number plate area.
-
At long last they have agreed to do a localised repair. It won't be 100% perfect, but it will be much better than it is. Will cost £250 according to them. VW to pay.
Anyway, I am seeing a guy on the 24th who will attempt to improve it with heat etc. But I'll still give it to the VW Body shop. At least they will work on it with a slightly better 'canvas'.
