Title: Hello from Tokyo
Post by: Ayashii on 28 July 2010, 03:30
Hello from Tokyo Japan!

Just joined the site as I have just ordered a Mk6 GTI from a local Volks dealer here after trading in my trusty Honda Fit (Jazz). Its a 2010 January model with less than 1000kms on the clock.
Standard spec in Japan for the mark 6 GTi includes Xenons, DSG, power mirrors, multi function steering wheel and 17inch wheels.
My shadow blue has all of the standard kit plus 18 inch wheels, adaptive suspension, satnav and leather!

Any other GTI owners here in Japan?

cheers!

How much does the GTI cost you in Japan ?

Hi

the list price is about 3.6 million yen (about 26k GBP) at todays rates. You need to add all sorts of local taxes though including mandatory insurance for 36 months, recycling fees, weight tax and motor tax at point of purchase which brings it up to about 3.9 million yen (about 28.5k GBP).

Funny thing here is that you also need to get paperwork signed by the local police office to prove that you have an actual physical space to park the car  You can submit a hand drawing showing your place , the road, neighbours property etc and a big X where you will park the car!!

Welcome to the forum. Nice to have a Japanese owner of the GTi.

I can understand why they need this paperwork because of the lack of space in Japan.
The total area of the Japanese Islands is approximately the same as the UK, but the habitable area is less than half and most of the people have to live along the coastal plains as the country is very mountainous.

Additionally, Japan has a population close to 130 million so you can imagine how densely populated it is in the small habitable area available.

The country is very organised, very clean, with wonderfully well mannered and well dressed people, has excellent roads and the best fish in the world. The food is amazing and the bars and clubs great fun. The Tokyo Fish market is a must to see, being the worlds biggest. And then there are the electronics ..... wow!

I love Japan. Coming back to the UK after a holiday there is a complete culture shock as to how backward and disorganised we are. But, somehow, I love the UK more - just!

Kangei  Nice spec' you have. Can you get the LED rear lights in Japan? Most people here think it's a must-have add-on/option

I agree with am1w about coming back from Japan: Europe seems a right old mess

The whole country is very beautiful and really amazing.
It is very clean, very safe and very different.
You'll find it strange and amazing at the same time.
I think they are in the 22nd Century!
Really worth a visit.

must check about the LED tail lights - dont think they have them over here at all.

My plan is to get the car in 10 days and then during August I am going to recreate the route that Clarkson took when he raced the Nissan GT-R across Japan through the mountains from the west of Japan over to Tokyo (I'll be doing it in the other way around from Tokyo to the east coast).

Can't wait!!

Hello and welcome

Are European cars popular in Japan? Never been before but from the pictures I see of traffic, there never seems to be many Euro cars around

Well I finally got to collect my new car!!!!

The sun was blazing down (36C here at the moment) and the shadow blue metallic looked amazing glittering like a jewel! The car has been treated with something called a permanent coat (glass coat maybe?) so it looks spotless.
No regrets about the colour at all - its very unusual that it looks so different depending on the weather in that its more flat blue when cloudy.

Anyway, first impressions are wow! I used to drive a MKV GTI before but this seems far more planted on the road and more 'chunky' than the older model. Driving home from the garage last evening had a Honda NSX try to race me on a flat stretch and some young guys in an old GT-R follow alongside checking the car out. Didn't think that the car would bring such attention from those in the know!

Will post some pics when I get a chance - thanks for all your comments so far.

The UK is backwards and disorganised?  You want to come and work in Saudi even for a few days - then you'ill be BEGGING to go back to the UK which is paradise in comparison.

One of my many unfortunately unforgettable memories is of a Saudi man lifting his white robe and passing water in the middle of the street in a haunched position. I thought at that time he was passing oil and had struck lucky.

BTW: Hello to our fellow GTi owner in Tokyo and congratulations getting your new car today.
Sorry to have highjacked your thread a bit. All good fun.

Everyone were i work has also comented on the colour, and love it.
