Title: bye bye golf!
Post by: BiGUKG on 26 July 2010, 21:58
Here's the pride and joy of the moment, my first car and a 1.3 Golf Ryder. It was my twin brothers first car and we made it how it is today from standard together as a little project. I bought the GTi lights for him, and lent him the money for the wheels, actually, I'm the one who found the car on Autotrader for him and convinced him he HAD to buy it.

He wouldn't be that grateful though since a few months after it needed a new exhaust all the way through, new shock absorbers, new brake pads, work on one of the rear drums AND major work to replace burnt out valves. Anyway, it's been an absolute pleasure to make it as it stands today and as a first car, I couldn't be prouder of it. It drives beautifully, it looks stunning and it's everything a VW should be. So well built, reliable and brilliant!!!

A few pics of how it stands now, I have put smoked side repeaters on it since these were taken weekend before last when I took ownership. I will try and find some pics of what it looked like standard too!

Really genuinely chuffed with how the back looks....

Front looks a little bare, so I've got a GTi grille on its way. Short of buying a big bumper, which I can't afford at the moment I don't know how else to "jazz it up".

Any comments wlecome, but be kind, I love it to bits. I've only had it just over a week and I must of cleaned it (and the bloody wheels!!) enough times to average out atleast once a day, if not more. Can't get enough of cleaning it which I enjoy almost as much as driving it. There's nothing like standing and admiring it spotlessly clean!

Not bad for nearing 20years old, just clocked on to 115k and isn't in bad nick at all all things considered!
My brother owned it for 3 years and only drove it for one of the three, had a job with company cars for a while then brought a lovely MK4 Golf which I'll put some pics up of tomorrow too. I'll try and get some decent one of it clean with the smoked side repeaters too.

Really keen to keep this thread updated with any developments, issues/problems etc although there aren't many. Ultra reliable since it's had the work done.

I do badly need armour door plates though cos some fck faces have tried to break into it with a screw driver! And I don't want that happening again. Does have "Clifford Protected" stickers on the windows, which to be honest are probably more of a detterant (cant spell) than door plates would be! All good for security though and want as much as possible, I'd be so gutted if anything happened to it!!

As I have said on my Dubs Thread... Great looking car.... Something to be proud of...

Just need to add the Red Bumper strip (I wouldn't bother with the side stripes as you cant get the proper OEM alloy backed stuff)... and put on some Eibach springs which will lower it to a 16V level... these cost about £130.00 but are worth every penny...

If you are looking for a good OEM look drop the smoked side's and fit clear ones and then get some clear "edition one" bumper lense's, my lad picked some up on here for a fiver & they were proper HELLA ones... Bargin just like your alloys...

Your rear lights are fine as they are 16V smoked ones...

I may have a GTI grille for you... Where are you based???

Look forward to some more piccys....

Lovely Car & she is a credit to you M8...

Thanks mate,

The smoked sides do look lovely, I'll see if you change your mind when you see piccys! It does look good and if I did go down the big bumper route (something I'm not too sure about at the moment!) then I'd probably have smoked bumper lenses too!

I should have one being collected for delivery today mate, but still looking all over for a pair of door plates. There were people sitting outside in a car yesterday looking at the MK2 and the brothers MK4 which makes me so uneasy. I spent all night going to the window to make sure there was no-one trying to get into it! If I catch anyone even looking at it the wrong way, I'll be outside with something heavy in my hand to see them off!!

I'll try and get some more pics on after work today, I'll give it a little bit of a clean first then I'll get some good pics :)

Oh, and you're right. It does really need lowering and I'll look into the Eibach springs. How much would you suggest lowering it though from what it is now? I was thinking about 35mil but I don't know enough about it to buy anything based on a judgement I've made about it. It badly badly needs a GTi set up with the shocks etc though. Body roll by it's bucket load, even on long bends in the road!
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf Ryder, with GTi bits!!
Post by: X4MGS on 27 July 2010, 12:32
Eibach springs only come with 2 drops as far as I know... 30 & 60mm i went for the 30mm and that suits me fine..

If the shocks are knacked stick on Boge turbo's from GSF... Its what I have... replace all the topmounts with the OEM MK3 ones and it will improve the handling 100%... Then if still flush but on uprated ARB's I dont know if Eibach ones will fit yours but I guess you gould look at bog std GTI ones...

Ask around the forum... as there are more technical peeps than me..

Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf Ryder, with GTi bits!!
Post by: BiGUKG on 27 July 2010, 13:39
What I really need to do, money permitting, is get up the scrappy with my brother or step Dad, find a half decent MK2 and have everything I can off it! Definitely think lowering it 30mm is on my list of things to do though, but that'll have to go hand in hand with GTi shocks and ARBs.

I took some pictures of it just now (on my lunch break!) so I'll upload those when I get in later on :)

Might be going up to Prept at Brands tomorrow night in the MK4 with my brother and fiancee, but won't be taking the MK2 up there. Might well make an appearance at the August one though!

Just uploaded loads of pics so hope these don't bore anyone but I love all of them in their own way!

At work...

After a clean....

Side repeaters... can see the key type scratch on the wing

Showing the condition a bit....

and again...

and finally some pics of the MK2 with my brothers MK4 and the fiancees MK4 Ibiza,
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n258/bigukg/DSC00072.jpg)

I really do think the side repeaters make the world of difference and look lots better. Next little thing is new number plates, maybe pressed ones but I'm not sure they'd look that nice. To replace the crooked rear one!!
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf Ryder, with GTi bits!!
Post by: BiGUKG on 14 October 2010, 22:11
Only just found this again  Forgot I'd put the pics of my car with the MK4 and the fiancees Ibiza!

I've just won a mk2 big front bumper and I've already got the rear bumper, so they'll be going on soon which I'm very excited about! Can't wait to see them fitted.

I'm just wondering about whether or not I'm going to get a grille spoiler/brow on it though! My older brother seems to think I should and he's getting all excited lol but I'm not so sure! Would want to colour code it but it could be painted the same time as the rear bumper so it wouldn't be too much hassle.

Also ordered new number plates, need an interior fog light switch and some clear bumper indicators now though!

Expensive hobby this "mk2'ing" !!

So, some f*cktard decided to break into my car last Tuesday night and do all this damage without anyone batting an eye lid....

Weekend just gone my big brother got a decent alarm fitted for me, so hopefully it won't happen again. It's pretty sensitive too but doesn't seem affected by heavy rain/wind which is a result. Nothing worse than an alarm acting like the boy who cried wolf 24/7!

Anyway, decided to give the dirty f*cks who broke into it a nice two fingered salute and fitted the big bumper which arrived the day I got it all fixed

Some pics of it as it stands, but I do have a black grille badge to fit when it's finished peeing it down!

Looking at those pics though, I'm not even sure I want to fit the black badge, since that one's still in such good nick! We'll see! Will rpobably fit it and see if it grows on me but might be one of those things best kept to one side until I get smoked/clear side repeaters.

looks good! Dont let those scum set you back.

Are they genuine bumpers? They fit very well :nerd:
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - 26/10/10 update with pics!
Post by: BiGUKG on 26 October 2010, 23:50
Thanks mate, not pleased with the fitment to be honest, but it needs to come back off at some point anyway.
As far as I know it's a genuine one, cost me £100 but came with everything and was the right colour. Was sold to me as genuine anyway.

One of the fog lights was total rot inside so that'll need replacing, but apart from that well chuffed - looks like a different car for a big bumper and a new set of plates.
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - 26/10/10 update with pics!
Post by: Mr Blue on 26 October 2010, 23:53
To tell if they are genuine - You should see a moulding line on the corners of the bumper and the metal bumper iron is a push fit. Also the side brackets are moulded. Pattern ones are screwed in.

yes i have a genuine bumper fettish
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - 26/10/10 update with pics!
Post by: BiGUKG on 26 October 2010, 23:58
My older brother would have ripped into me if I did have a pattern one, so I'm sure it is genuine! lol.
He had a red GTi almost identical to what mine looks like (big bumper, tornado red, he had rainbow interior etc) when I was about.....8.
Thats why I decided to get this and make it look how it is - happy happy memories! Got a tornado red Mk2 Golf fetish.... a bit :)

Finished work a bit early today so had a bit of extra light to give the car a well desrved clean, the wheels were filthy but that didn't take long to sort out...............by no means perfect but look lots better.

Then I gave the car a good clean and managed to take what I think is the best pic so far I have of the Golf, new desktop wallpaper ...................

Big Bumper does look impressive...

Still Like those Alloys... Nicer looking than the RA's... (Just fitted mine back on for the winter months!!)...

Keep up the good work on the OEM Parts Front!!

Yeah I like them mate, still not sure exactly what they are!! They aren't Corrodo wheels though I don't think because iirc Corrados are 5x100? These wheels are 4 stud.

Back bumper fitting next and lower on eibach springs etc.

Thanks mate. It does need lowering and new dampers, as the standard set up it has at the moment seems to have so much body roll! Think that's more of an ARB jobby to be honest but don't even know if GTi ARBs will fit as it's a 1.3......

Fitted a black badge after work yesterday, but I'm really not sure if I like it or if I prefer the old silver badge, which tbh is in pretty good condition so does look good.

Did 16v's have these fitted as standard? I am after making it look like a 16v tbh although I'll never badge it up as one I don't think.

I did think about it but I want it to look like a GTi, not pretend to be one, and there's a massive difference.

I'll probably stick with it for the time being and see how I feel about it in a few weeks.

I suppose I was wrong to say I wanted it to look like a 16v lol, makes it sound like I'll be upset if I forget to have an ariel put in the rear centre of the roof etc.
I mentioned it to my older brother who had a 16v about 16 years ago and he said he doesn't think they did so no idea.

I think the black badge makes it look much smarter, I've just done the same to mine as it wasn't in perfect nick but went down the route of painting it black instead, ended up with a really shiney black badge now, just need to fit the right GTI badge on the front.

Nice car, keep up the good work.

Thanks mate, just been to the petrol station to put some air in the tyres, only had a £1 coin, got there, took all the valve caps off ,and it wouldn't take my pound, so I got back in the car with the ump to come back home and get some change. When I got back I realised I'd left my valve caps on top of the thing

Only about ten mins home and back, got back and some f*cker had nicked them. I know they're only valve caps, but it does make you wonder doesn't it.

Cosmetic stuff is being held up temporarily, the thrust bearing in the clutch has gone so it needs sorting. Might as well just replace the clutch to be honest, so a clutch kit is next on the list of things to do!

Yeah, someone's well smug about it I expect. I ordered 20 on eBay (so 5 sets) for £1.98 delivered which is cheap I thought!

I had thought about that, putting a 2.0L lump in it at a later date, but its so much effort and cost if I'm going to do all that, brakes, suspension, looms etc I might as well buy a cheap GTi and just make a decent car out of 2 if you know what I mean? Would be able to do that in a day if the GTi I got was the right colour :)

Going to try and get some decent high res pics of it on Thursday when I'm off work. I'll post any good ones on here too at lower res.

So respray as well then   I know, that would be easier but if your car is mega solid it's always worth a thought in the future.  Save up and do a 2.0 on carbs... no wiring required.

Thats a nice bargain with the caps... get more and leave a trail of them onto the road and hope the scumbags get run over!

great looking car. just skim read through (looked at all the pics though!)

a cheap upgrade that will make a difference visually would be a gti spec chin spoiler for the front. it will bolt straight on and pattern ones are about £25 from GSF

also was there some confusion over the wheels? they are off a corrado. they came standard on my mate's g60. (edit!!! dont listen to me!)only the vr6 had 5 stud hubs.

They look similar but I don't think they are as wide. Mine are off a corrado, the faces of the spokes sit a bit deeper and are flat. The ones on the op's golf are about level with the rim and have a curve.

BiGUKG what code is stamped under the centre caps? G60's should have 191 601 025 AA

Similar to mine yeah but they don't look as deep, could be off a BMW e30 or even an old vauxhall. I know the RA's look almost identical to some nova and astra wheels.

I didn't have a chance to look under the centre cap but I will at some point today and write down the code etc thats under there. Makes sense they'd be E30 alloys though.... Only paid £180 for the lot in near spotless condition with nearly brand new tyres!

So scared the engines on its way out :( Hopefully it's something minor though.

Went from never missing a beat since I've had it, to being a total pig all day. Started with the knocking noise, which isn't very loud or frequent but loud enough to cause concern. Some have suggested it might be big end bearings but looking at videos of cars with the same problem on youtube I'm not so sure because the knock mine has is so different.

Not that I can video it or ask anyone to look at it at the moment, since the alarm has decided to permanently immobilise the engine, set or un-set. Total pig. So it isn't going anywhere at the moment, until I find out / work out how to reset the alarm, THEN get this problem sorted. Could be off the road until next week the way it's going.  :embarassed:

I don't think the wheels are the old Vauxhall type as i've got these on my car, very similar to the RA's, just waiting to get my re-furbed RA's on.

Good luck sorting the knocking out, my wifes mini had a knocking noise and it turned out to be a faulty clutch plate.

That's interesting. The thurst bearing has gone on the clutch so it may well be on its way out. If thats a wear and tear issue? It doesn't seem as aggresive as videos of big end bearing going I've seen on youtube but that's the only thing making me think it's not that atm.

Thanks mate, and it's a scorpion alarm - needs resetting badly! I have found some quites on the internet about it so I'll have a crack at it tomorrow, if I can just get the alarm reset tomorrow me and my step dad can have a proper look at it Friday when we were due to do an oil change anyway and see if we can get to the bottom of it. I was also planning on getting a clutch kit for it tomorrow too so I'll see if the fiancee will still take me to get that, and I'll get that fitted ASAP too! We'll get there, just hope its before Monday really. Got tomorrow and Friday off work so wish me luck!!

Is the knocking noise almost metallic and a little hollow sounding? Just wondering if it might be the clutch if you say you've got issues with it.

Yeah, it does sound a bit like that. Its not a noise that makes me cringe everytime I hear it, but you can tell something isn't right. If it was that, would it make any difference whether the clutch was engaged/dis-engaged. It seems to be when it's dis-engaged at the moment and I haven't noticed it's got louder when I engage the clutch to put it in gear.

EDIT: What would cause the clutch to make the knocking noise mate? Should there be any other symptoms? (Like slipping, which I haven't had any of?) The thrust bearing on that clutch went months ago, so it makes sense the rest might be on its way out.

 Got me thinking now mate.........

The mini's are  known for faulty thrust bearings, the noise we had sounded like this and was intermittant, i guess it was the clutch plate moving in the housing but i'm no spanner monkey.

It will not be the clutch, if you have let the oil level drop then I suspect a main bearing has picked up.

Does sound a bit like that, but much less frequent. Me neither mate, don't know much at all about the mechanical side.

Expect that means no driving mate if it's that?

Going out any min to try and reset the alarm, then atleast I'll be able to get it started and get someone to have a proper look at it.

The belt has gone, teeth missing everywhere but it's not actually snapped. Picked up a new belt today so get that om and see how it runs, hopefully not damaged the valves though because it wasn't driven with the knocking. We'll see.

If they are knocking you will need to be lucky to have not bent some.

The weather here has just been constant rain during light hours and we can't get it into the garage for all the sh!t thats piled up in there at the moment, but not just yet no mate or I would have definitely posted.
Step Dad said he thinks it might need a water pump, but I've got the belt sorted ready to go on.

Walking to work at the moment, in the rain......... you don't realise how much you rely on a car until you have to be without it!

Got the new cam belt on it today and apparently it makes a right racket, my step dad who knows his stuff said he wouldn't be suprised if 4 out of 8 of the valves have gone in it, and he reckons the head has probably taken some damage too.....

So, while I'm at it I thought I might as well just get a new head. I did think it would be easier to find than it has been though, on the WORLD wide web! But no such luck.

Anyone know of a decent website that's relatively cheap? I think to buy new it's going to be too expensive but we'll see. Looks like lots of phone calls to local scrappys are on the cards though, great fun that'll be!

Thought about doing some head work on it to get a few more ponies?

 Sorry mate!

Yeah it is a bit grim, not driven it for a week today which I've hated. Wanted to get the one from the scrappy but they said the engine code wasn't the same, so could they have a different number and it was going to be £75 and all that, so I can't be doing with it if they don't know their ar*e from their elbow and they're trying to tuck me up!

One'll come along eventually. It's just such a pain not being able to drive the Golf!

Managed to source a cylinder head a while ago but my step dad hasn't fitted it yet. He had the old one off and said it definitely needs the replacement head put on, so I got all the other bits that needed replacing and he still hasn't finished!!!!

He's having trouble with the timing, I know the bottom "cog" has an arrow on it, that apparently lines up all OK, but according to the book, the dot on the cog on the head should line up at right angles with the back of the cylinder head?? Not sure that will make sense. But apparently the way it lines up is different to what it says in the book, because the valves are open?

All a bit vague - but the point is the bloody thing still isn't fixed so I'll have to post again when it is.

I was also going to buy a new clutch for the Golf next month and get that done at some point but I'm not sure if I will be able to afford it :(
It's only the thrust bearing gone but do want it fixed this side of Christmas really so HSBC might have to lend me the money in form of an overdraft if it comes to it!!

Step Dad is away no until Tuesday, so not expecting the car to be fixed until atleast Thursday, when it would have been off the road 3 weeks. What a waste of time paying insurance and road tax for a month!!!!

It's back!!! Drove it to town today to do some Christmas shopping and it runs so well, so much better than it ever has done so I'm well chuffed!! Means I don't have to walk to work in this sh!t too - unless it snows then I won't risk taking it out.

You'll see on pics I've got an aerial stump on the wing, so I managed to get a rubber grommit off eBay, then I'll put a roof aerial on like the 16v so that's to come.

Other than that, I replaced a duff interior switch, (blank one - Thanks Ken!) and got a bonnet prop clip (technical term) because I had a bit of wire to tie it down when the bonnet was down before.......so it was about time that got replaced.

So nothing too amazing to report, apart from it's back on the road and feels so much happier for it. Engine seems much more calm on idle and it's a much smoother drive so I'm pleased!

Cheers!

Might well need some work in the new year!

The thrust bearing on the clutch has gone, which doesn't really matter but it is annoying (the noise it makes!!) and now the exhaust which was new from the manifold in 2007 is blowing. So that'll need doing too. Could be anything from £50 for the new mid section to £188 for complete, but we'll see!

I've decided, I do eventually want a Bora, 1.9 TDi sport, but I'll have to bring myself to sell the Golf first and I doubt that'll happen any time in the next 12months if not longer.

Got the big GTI front bumper on and have the rear one which needs a bit of paint, so by May latest it'll be exactly how I want it! and with the decent weather I'll be able to keep it polished and looking good.

Bring on the summer!!!
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - 28/11/10 **Back on the road!!**
Post by: BiGUKG on 12 January 2011, 11:00
Well, in my last post it ended bring on the summer, fooking right as well!

I went out today for my morning break, decided I'd sit in the car, put a CD on and relax for a bit......realised there's a lot of water in the rear footwell behind the passenger seat!! Not good!! I reckon it's where it was broken in to and the seal was tampered with on the back, it's letting water in, so my step dad (who does windscreens etc for a living) is going to have a look at it tonight and try and sort it out.

In the mean time, I'm going to have to try and get it dried out and I have no idea how that's going to happen just yet!! Lots of paper towels maybe!

On the plus side, I've got a clutch kit to go on (due to thrust bearing going) and it'll be going in to the garage beginning of February to have the exhaust looked at.

The clutch kit won't go on until the weather smartens up a bit, unless the clutch starts slipping and at the same time the rear bumper will be painted and fitted. Might try and get some pics later of the water in the back!

Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - *Almost time to say goodbye :( *
Post by: BiGUKG on 16 January 2011, 23:20
As sad as I'll be to see it go, I think it's very nearly time to say goodbye to the Golf. It just seems everything has gone bad at once and I fully intend to get it sorted out and properly, but its made me realise I'd probably like something a bit newer.

What with the break in a while ago, the front bumper was a pick me up but a few things need to be done now!

- The thrust bearing on the clutch went, I knew it needed doing but now it seems to have got much louder, so it's definitely time it was done. Got a clutch kit to do that!
- The gear box has totally gone, it makes horrible whining noises and is a pig to get in to gear! So, I'll source a new gear box, do the oil, and get the clutch on at the same time.
- The mid-section on the exhaust is blowing, so it'll go into a garage to have that done. Be about £65 I would have thought!
- The rear passenger door has a leak on the window seal so that'll be sorted and the back footwell dried out!
- The handbrake is useless and I don't trust it at all. Doesn't come up miles and had a new cable not long ago, pretty sure it's the brake shoes? So that'll need to be done.
- The battery doesn't seem to hold it's charge properly, so that's probably the alternator as the battery isn't that old!

So, a lot to do before it can be sold (so by then it'll be mechanically sound and I dunno if I'll actually want to sell it!!)...........but I do really think it's time!
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - *Almost time to say goodbye :( *
Post by: SoundillusioN on 16 January 2011, 23:31
Shame... I hope you hold on to it but it's getting to a point where like a mk1, a mk2 can be difficult to run as a daily unless it's had a major refurb all round...  Hopefully when it's all mint you'll change your mind about getting something newer... Unless you can have the luxury of something newer as a daily and this a toy?
Title: Re: Tornado Red MK2 Golf - *Almost time to say goodbye :( *
Post by: BiGUKG on 16 January 2011, 23:53
It is going to be a massive shame to see it go, wish I could keep it but just haven't got anwhere to put it. It's a 1.3, not quick, doesn't handle particularly well, but it's a Red MK2 Golf, always always wanted one. But, as a daily driver, all I'm doing is running it in to the ground.

I'll have to take a bank loan out and get something a bit sensible, want to move out with the fiancee soon.

Fog lights aren't wired up, so I'll get that sorted, and the big GTI rear bumper painted and fitted too! So it'll be in good shape when it goes! This is really going to make me not want to sell it!!

Now has;
GTI front bumper
GTI alloys
GTI lights
GTI spoiler
GTI front grille
GTI arches
New cam belt
Replacement cylinder head
New head gasket

and will have;
GTI Rear Bumper
Replacement gearbox
New clutch
Sound exhaust
New brake shoes
New alternator/battery
New fog lights

So it won't be a bad car by the time I come to sell it!

Well, with everything that's gone wrong with the Golf recently I've decided to take out a small loan and buy something newer, picked a Polo up Saturday.

W/2000 Reg
112400 miles
2 owners
Full VW service history
Pretty near spotless condition

Its the 1.4 16v SE model, really like it!
Picked it up for a cheap £1600, due a service so it's booked in at VW's.

Seems to have been a well looked after car.... pics before I got it...
