8v rod change box on not so sure the mk3 gti clutch cable is goin to work tho seems abit short

Think you're going to be out of luck there.  The 8V G3 GTI, which has an 020 box uses a larger input shaft than the G2 GTI, so if you've used a G2 gearbox and a G3 8V GTI clutch you're not going to have any drive.

Why aren't you using the 16V cable-shift gearbox?  Unless you've bolted the 020 diff you're going to have a failed gearbox on your hands shortly.

Have you re-lined the brake system with new hard lines?  If so, have you fitted a compensator on the rear beam?

If not, you'll need one.  If you've not finished to system I'd recommend wiring it up different to standard, with a manual bias valve and with the front brakes on separate ports out of the master cylinder.

Time to get all that trim out now

Post by: leeroy20vt on 22 July 2010, 22:36
the box was out of the 8v mk3 i had havent used the 16v box as need to find a pedal box from a corrado or passat

was goin to fit manual compensator iether in the car or under the bonnet just got to find one

i take it the brake are split at the mo then one hole on master does one side and other hole does other side ?

Looking good!

i take it the brake are split at the mo then one hole on master does one side and other hole does other side ?

Should be split diagonally from corner to corner as standard

You cannot put a manual adjuster in the system if it is split as it is out of the factory.  You need to totally re-set up the system.

Two ports on the master should lead individually to the front brakes, the third should go back on the car.  There is a fourth that you can block off with a bleed nipple.

Bear in mind that all lines out of the master cylinder are at the same pressure.

The third line is where the bias valve is put.  The bias valve reduces the fluid pressure after the bias valve.  You will only need one flexible line on to the beam.  There should then be a tee on the beam that puts lines to either side, via flexis to the rear brakes.

You can use the cable-change gearbox with the standard pedal box, using a Seat Toledo 16V clutch cable, gearbox bracket and actuator arm.  This is what DannyP and I run on our 'boxes.

cheers dh tbh only went the 8v box route for now as it was the cheaper option

as for brakes i only 2 port on the master cylinder and that was of the mk3 16v will have to find another me thinks
Title: Re: my new track sl@g
Post by: Diamond Hell on 23 July 2010, 12:01
That's just how I've approached it.

You should be OK with a 2-port master - a single line goes to the front brakes, tees in the bay and goes to either corner.  The other port goes rear, through the bias valve.

thats what im thinking m8 also just found some reducers off a mk1 cab wasnt sure if that may be another option ?

No, you need to reduce the pressure, which is what the bias valve does.  Do it once, do it right.

If it's any use I have a G3 16V rad in mine.  I just had to fabricate top-mounting brackets to make it fit.

nice one dh i will probs go back to a mk2 clocks ect when and if i use the mk2 coil

mk3 16v rad it is then all it was im sure i read some where not to put them in oh well its easier to pipe it up than the mk2

what did u do with pipes goin to heater matrix ?
Title: Re: my new track sl@g
Post by: Diamond Hell on 25 July 2010, 10:19
Put them in the heater matrix.

Why wouldn't you want a car with a heater?

If it rains with no matrix you're going to mist up.

Don't want that on a track day when I could be out embarrassing much more expensive machinery.

cheers

The fan is a slimline twin fan off a Toledo 16v, although I did notice that the TDI has the same unit.  It's BIG.  It's on the Toledos with air-con.  Bolts right up.

I used the G3 pipework in the bay, into the matrix I fitted when I had the dash out in 2007.  Fits up fine and will work fine.

I'd be concerned about the brackets not being square, but rotated around to the front.  Until I've seen the complete set up it's difficult to pass judgement.

I'm confused.

What happens at the back?

Where are the seats from?  Rails like that are usually used on shelled bucket seats with side-mounts.
Title: Re: my new track sl@g
Post by: leeroy20vt on 26 July 2010, 20:53
there out of a subaru the rears have flat bottoms on them if that makes sense so in theory i think can be bolted straight thru floor with plates underneath ?
Title: Re: my new track sl@g
Post by: Diamond Hell on 26 July 2010, 20:57

That sounds nasty.

I was expecting you to say that you would be making a second bar to weld in at the back, so the seat is supported on a pair of rails.

Don't use seats that are designed for use with 3-point belts with harnesses - BAD idea.
Title: Re: my new track sl@g
Post by: leeroy20vt on 26 July 2010, 21:01
i can make another bar not a prob if the seats were designed just for 3 point seat belt why would they have holes in the seats for a harness or is it just to make them look better  :undecided:

yer looks that way so if i put rail at front lower enough and bolt the rear thru floor they will be sitting flat

If you're going to all this work why not make the seat rails suitable for proper buckets?

Strikes me as you're getting 90% of the way for a proper install then then falling at the last fence.

I *really* don't like this idea of bolting the seats down through the floor.

good point m8
so what il do is make another rail for rear and bolt rear of seat to that as well instead of goin thru floor that way when i decide to go for another set of seats there in place ready to go

also had a looky at the subaru seats and seams they have metal frame work al the way round the seat inside including were the holes are for the harnesses strange a

i weighed them in friday doh!!!!!!!!!!   im not to fussed about using the seat rails as they have cost me about 3 quid a pair to make and a little time

these seats have bolts on the bottom like a standard pair of bucket seats with the subaru runner bolted to them only reason for doin it this way is i need them to be able to adjustable as me and a m8 will be using it

arrggghhhh getting a head ache lol thought it would be simples once i hade made the seat rails

I honestly can't speak on this one as the braking on the Syncro is quite different.

I know some people have struggled to lower the rear bias enough.  Ask on CGTI - more track numpties on there.

One point though (only going off what i've read), you might want something down for grip in the driver's footwell

Just wear steel-caps.  They hold themselves down pretty well.

Mine's just got paint on the floor and I've never had any issues with my feet on track (it's generally the head that's the problem).

Skateboard tape is another alternative.

Skateboard tape is another alternative.

+1 I've ditched the rubber peddle covers and put skateboard grip tape on instead. I still have carpet mats but they'll be going once I've repainted the floor and I'll be putting more grip tape down.

What camber do you have on the front?

Dialing some more in might help the understeer issue, as it should see  more grip on the front, unless you already have some on there.  I run about -2.5 degrees on the front of the Syncro.

You could also look at fitting a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, but get the front end set up right first.  VW liked dialing plenty of understeer into their cars in the 80's and 90's as standard.

i really not sure tbh dh all i done was put as much camber is a could on it with the mk3 set up from what i have read u dont get as much with this setup
the front tyres have worn equally so im guessing its not to far off but im not sure

after we had softend the front up had no were near as much understeer unless u gave it large out of the tight bends then it would start to a little bit

its really the rear end feels very loose i guess a bit all over the show i sopose could be a whole number of things axle bushes/suspension set up dont think bearings are a issue as all new

FFS get some CDS notched and weld in harness bars to your diagonal hoop.

Do it properly!

Oh and whatever you're doing with the cage, make sure the mounts for the feet are made up and welded in properly, too.

yup want to get the harness espically before it goes on the road do u think i would be better off getting another diagonal put in as well ??

the mounts are the ones that came with the cage so should be all good would you weld the cage feet to the mounts ?

bit of bad news to my crank is past it so need to source another
i would just change engine but the hassle it was trying to get dvla to get the engine number changed first time round was a mare

If you have someone competent with a welder I'd definitely get a second diagonal put in.  Do check the Blue Book for regs on tube before doing this though and use the right stuff!

If the mounts are designed to have the cage legs bolted to them then do that, make sure you use good quality bolts though.

Depends whether you think you might want to take the cage out again - if you don't think you will go ahead and weld 'em in!

only thing i did notice it took a while for revs to drop down but dunno if thats because its got a 8v flywheel on it ?

now to drag cage out get that sprayed up finish the interior and get her booked in for a mot after crimbo

You should drop that bonnet back down:

1. it looks utter w*nk
2. it's a high-pressure area, so does not actually aid cooling at all.

HTHs.

I'm sure the only benefit of a raised bonnet is when the car is stationary, waiting in line at a drag strip for example.

Car is coming on though, cage is looking much better.
