Title: Flimsy Golf? .. Now fixed perfectly!
Post by: am1w on 13 July 2010, 21:17
I had a little prang last Friday. 100% my fault. My first accident for 15 years.
I rolled into the back of a lorry whilst fiddling with the sat nav at less than normal walking speed, dented the bonnet, marked the front bumper which had moved on its fixings and got a scratched front grille just below the bonnet dent.
The result, bumper irons need replacing, bumper needs re-shaping and painting, nearside front wing needs adjusting, a new front grille needed and painting of whole bonnet required. The total cost £1172.50 inc VAT. Loverly.
What bugs me is that such a little tap caused so much damage. Golf is flimsy or what?

My mk 5 GTI was hit at around 2-3 mph. Result badley scraped top-lower rear bumper & damaged mud flap & a tiny crease to metal on inner arch. Requires all new bumper-mud flap inner wing repair painting & all the rest etc.Total cost at VW 935.00 pounds !!!!!!!!. Local body repair place said same as VW theres came in at 825.00 pounds.

Not irons, clips. My mistake.
Anyway, I don't really care about the cost but I do worry about the car's toughness.
They got onto fixing the car straightaway. They like me and my money. Fine as long as the job is perfect. I have not got the time or patience to run around saving £50 of £100. Just want it fixed ASAP.
Feel sick to the stomach with myself.

Hit a Shogun at about 3mph.

Obviously don't make them like they used to.......

Very much like your shunt but reversed.
I'll be checking the progress and quality of the work on Thursday morning prior to collection and payment on Friday morning.
Fingers crossed.

Not so sure about flimsy as most new cars are designed to absorb the impact rather than the driver / pedestrian absorbing it. Hence the least wee bump can cause so much damage.

Its a horrible feeling especially when it is self inflicted. I'm sure I read somewhere that the chances of an accident are increased with people in brand new cars. Mostly due to folk tinkering with their new toys rather than paying attention!!! I know it nearly happened to me a few times when I was messing about with the RNS510

Hopefully it will come out as good as new. Make sure you check the paint matches especially at night under the street lights. As I think red is so easy to spot if it has been repainted and not matched correctly. Are they painting the front wings as well to blend it in as this is common practice?

Good luck.

Thank you for your thoughtful and kind response.
Yes, they will be blending the front wings with the bonnet and bumper. They mentioned that red is a pig of a colour to match and a colour mismatch is very obvious under unnatural lighting conditions. That bloody RNS has much to answer for.

Hope Wolfgang is soon restored to his former beauty and that your enjoyment of him is not marred forever more - by let's face it - something that could happen to any one of us.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that he is returned to you in tip top nick.

Please STOP playing with your RNS510 in future, there's a good boy

The car is not 'flimsy' and no the older cars are not stronger. It's to do with pedestrian safety, new crash regulations etc. If a little child walks out and you hit him/her the car won't just send him flying instead absorbing the impact making it as safe as possible. Yes I agree the price is very high for a little accident though.

I was also introduced to the fitter and sprayer who will be fixing the car. They took me to the car in the holding area and went through everything with me. I was quite impressed with this service. I was also faxed the complete repair schedule with prices today. Also, quite impressive.

Sounds like a good service. Here's hoping.
Like most on here I'm quite paranoid about my car and am very careful where I park it etc. In fact the car is due a service and I'm putting it off as I just know it will be parked in a tight car park which is something I never ever do.
So I know what you are going through with the anxiety. Its not nice at all. However your garage sounds like a good set up.

I promise I will never fiddle with that thing whilst I am on the move.
I had a really horrible weekend. First the car, then the water mains bursting 3 times right in front of my house! There was a fountain 20 foot high with one of the bursts. It kept happening 2am on Sat, Sun and Mon. Exhausted. The mud and mess is simply awful. Even the bloody dustman did not collect the refuse. What else will I have to endure, I wonder?

I really hope they are as good as they seem. Going nuts with the anxiety.
I am the same. Parking is a nightmare. One thing that's so good with the courtesy Polo is that I don't care too much and it is so easy to find an appropriate space. I really wonder how these massive saloons can be accommodated on our crowded streets.

Ha, ha. Know all about this and it will all be checked for swirls etc under the lights in the body shop which are really evil.

Had my bonnet resprayed recently by my local VW bodyshop - it had been attacked by an animal and had deep vertical claw marks in it that couldn't be polished out without burning through the clear coat (we believe it was a Fox). Once done it looked great under the bodyshop lights and in normal weather conditions - however the bright sunlight we've had over the last couple of weekends revealed holographic swirl marks where they've used an aggressive machine polisher on it. Not sure I trust them to sort it, it will be 4th time the car's gone to them with paint issues that needed 'polishing' out  :undecided:.

Hope it all works out OK for you, sounds like the customer service is good from what you've said.

Jeez

You are having a run of bad luck, been walking under ladders? or kicking black cats?

I am sure the car will be fine so try not to stress too much.

Take care

Nothing to do with swirls. I have only ever seen two red cars which have had paintwork done that under sodium lights it hasn't been blinding clear. I myself had a tornado red MKII that had the front end painted by a classic Jag specialist and in day light it was impossible to tell. Under those damn sodium lights the front end looked a different colour red completely.

You know this little problem could have been avoided if you had Darren install the voice recognition bit of the RNS510

(unless you already have.. in which case, why were you not using it?)

Might as well have sent the car to Helmund!
I simply cannot understand how someone can do this. It beggars belief.

So I got off lightly in that case.
Paying for it myself. Can't be arsed waiting for Insurance Company to give go ahead etc and also don't want to lose my NCD which it seems is unprotected. Now they tell me.
Just want the car back ASAP. Should be ready tomorrow, latest Friday morning.

I did say etc! Yes they will be checking the painwork under sodium lights! It's part of their procedures. This is why I went to them.

Yeah it becomes clear in the thread that it was someone's ex girlfriend who got the wrong car!!!!!!
The police have her details and have texts where she admitted it etc but so far they haven't even approached her and the incident happened a couple of months ago.

The story so far .....
Went to check the car earlier on.
Pretty good job I must admit. Inside of car left immaculate.
Beautiful paintwork on bumper, bonnet and wings. Wow! Perfect blending under their lights.
Only one little spot to be looked at on the inside edge of the bumper the size of a pin-head where I think the black undercoat is showing and a small stone chip (pin-head size) on the door which they will touch-up, flatten and polish.
Should be ready for tomorrow except for the front grille. This is because VW sent a damaged replacement grille! New one should be in by 9 am tomorrow morning.
Must say I am impressed, so far.
