Ta, JV.

The plan is a tried and tested one. Take one ABF engine from mk3 golf ( my old car) and transplant into my late spec mk2 16v.

Transplant ABF in place of KR on stock Mk3 management.
Retain narrow track for time being.
Use mk3 cable change box.
Eventually fit the 280mm brakes I have bought.

As you read this Rubjonny is making my loom for me as I decided I wanted the car finished this year.

I am an engine transplant virgin so I'm loosing my cherry on this project....

Car has just failed it's MOT so going to get it welded MOT'd and then begin in ernest.

Will update this when I have some pictures.

Here's one to keep you goin though

Took it down to get MOT'd the other day as it's been languishing on my parents drive for the past month with no MOT.
To get about I had nicked my Ma's car and all it's starting first time, super economical, heated leather, digital radio goodness.
Now I'm on holiday, and the fact "the guilt" is setting in I need to get going on the car.

Car failed MOT on following points:-

#1 Offside headlamp aim too low ( sorted now)

#2 Centre upper stop lamp not working ( the one in the ghey spoiler has never worked in my ownership, but got a replacement tailgate)

#3 Nearside front brake excessively corroded **DANGEROUS**

#4 Offside front brake excessively corroded **DANGEROUS**

#5 Nearside front (jacking point)vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously effecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings

#6 Nearside front Anti-roll bar has excessive play in a pin/bush

#7 Offside (outer sill) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously effecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings

#8 Centre exhaust system not adequately supported ( had fallen off it's hangar, sorted now)

#9 Front brakes imbalanced **DANGEROUS**

#10 Idle speed too high approx 1200rpm (sorted now)

Advisory Items

#1 Vehicle has only just met the required service brake efficiency . It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair.

#2 Parking brake has only just met the efficiency It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair.

#3 O/s/f inner wing corroded (nothing major, just surface and will be treated when I pull out the engine)

#4 O/s/r handbrake cable insecure (need to find the wee metal clip secures it to the rear beam)

#5 O/s/r inner wing corroded (nothing major, just surface and will be treated when I pull out the engine)

So quite the list, assuming **DANGEROUS** isn't the Jackson Album, but I know brakes are my fault as I've never done them before, didn't bleed them properly after changing the master cylinder. Lesson learned, was planning on replacing the whole system when I had the car apart for engine swap, but ho hum.

Was quite p!ssed off regarding the welding though, as paid 140 gold coins to get them done last MOT. Turns out they have patched, bodged, not seam welded and not done what they said they had  They didn't even underseal it! Looked lovely from the top, but garage has subsequently, it appears, gone bust. Good. Feckers.

So I have ordered (so far)
#1 a complete new sill to replace the bodged one.
#2 ARB bushes and droplinks.
#3 Brake flexi hoses all round
#4 25ft of copper brake lines
#5 4 OEM bleed nipples
#6 Handbrake clips
#7 Handbrake cables
#8 DOT 5.1 brake fluid

Going to get a friend, who I trust to do the welding/ tidy up underneath. They are also going to sort out the brakes etc as I'm scunnered with the whole thing. So it should be MOT'd in the none to distant future.

I will be removing the plastic trim tomorrow to assess the damage, as we all know, 90 spec trims hide a multitude of sins. I am considering getting rid of the kit completely and going skinny bumber when I get the respray done but we'll see.

wee pic of what the bodyshop left in their wake prior to me getting it sorted, this is where the drivers seatbelt attaches to...

More pics and updates to see what lurks beneath the dreaded plastic trim...

The horrors that lurk beneath 90 spec trims, I knew it was going to be bad but I didn't expect this

Previous owners "attempt" at rolling arches

So I have ordered/ collected 4x new wings front and rear plus a new sill and petrol flap panel. Have a replacement passenger door and tailgate to go on too. Let the "new car" jokes commence.

Have also ordered 2ltrs of Oak Green, 2.5ltrs of laquer, 2ltrs primer and 5ltrs of thinners too

Project ROTBOX is underway...

More pics to follow.

Collected these today.

Going to pull and trim/roll the front arches before I rustproof, prime, paint them.

Come payday, I will pay for my paint.

Then, it's on...

Ok so been a wee while since I did anything, been busy, just not on the car

Bought this little lot, it's a bit weird to be so excited about collecting paint but I am :nerd:

I also picked up this little item for a price too good to miss, those into their old skool ice will know what it is

Not much of an update but it's an update.

Been away, got engaged :D

Now back to the Golf.

Only had a few hours today so took a grinder to the rust in the rear seams.

Started out like this.

Ended up like this, sorry quality isn't great but I culdn't see the screen from the glare from the sun.
Did primer it for short term but didn't take a photo as I was falling down tired...

Powdered Mk2 anyone? Just add water...

That's it for now. Will post up some more photo's of the other things I bought for the project when I get the chance :rthumb:

Cheers for looking.

Your fuel filler looks marginally better than mine, i'll be interested to see how you tackle it. Good work so far though, mines the white GTI in the dub projects, had similar issues with the rear wheel arch once i took the plastic arch off

 Yeah, it's not project rotbox for nothing! If you see in the boot in the third to last pic you'll see I have a complete filler repair panel which I will trim to suit. Hoping to get out with the angle grinder next weekend. That's if it stops raining

More pics when I get them

Started out like this, only had an hour mind... :D

How NOT to roll an arch   (Prev' owners I hasten to add)

Looks a bit like this at the mo as had to go to work :bang:

Selection of the screws and adhesives used to bodge the big kit on ( Note the rather tasty brass screws!)

Will update more when I've done a bit more..

Apparently MIG welding in the rain is generally considered "dangerous"?

Sissys.... :D

Will update pics when I find my camera lead and hopefully the rain will go off long enough for me to actually get some stuff done :

Right some pic's, got started on the wings I bought.

Started trimming the lip for folding the steel back to retain strength.

Got a bit anal and trimmed off the swarf  :)

Tiger sealed all the seams on the wing to make sure rust should kept at bay for a few years yet.

Folded lip and sealed it
(http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr286/neobadness/079.jpg)

All sealed up
(http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr286/neobadness/086.jpg)

Then these arrived, cheers Fraser. :rthumb:

Cleaned this up for welding,
(http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr286/neobadness/089.jpg)

My first weld in anger :D
(http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr286/neobadness/090.jpg)

No doubting the penetration of these welds...

opted to flush the wing repeaters rather than fit the mk3 ones.

More to come....

Filled and smothed the rear of the wing...

Decided to have a bash at welding up holes as I'm planning on flushing the doors etc.

Not too bad for a first attempt I'd say. Did the 2p trick and worked pretty well I'd say.

Quick spray of primer after rubbing down

Primer is still drying in the pics and that's what gives the matt/gloss effect.

Most pleased with this one...

Went old school today and found this. :haha:

More pic's to come when I do more. Cheers for looking  :)

Right, had a cr@ap load of stuff going on last week and a bit but I've tried to keep momentum up on project rotbox.

Nice new (rot free) door. Lovely colour but unfortunately not the right one for my car.

Started rubbing down

No Mig welders were harmed in the smoothing of this door (Phil, if you're reading this, it's not as bad as it looks ) Dropped a bolt when loosening off the wire spindle, got it out and put back together, that was an hour or so well spent...

Door scotchbrited

Door trim holes prepped for welding

Holes plug welded (See Phil, your welder still works great)

And then ground down

Light skim of filler

Coat of primer and trim holes are no more

Other wing stone chipped

And then gloss blacked so the crud slides off easier ( tip from jag' restorer)

Guide coat

Started rubbing back the wing blank

Flatted properly, but ran out of primer... and that is that for now. Cheers for looking

Few updates as I'm laid up just now,

Got the car into my friends lockup, which beats the hell out of working on the driveway.

New ARB with Poly bushes
(http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr286/neobadness/DSC00045.jpg)

Broke the 13mm bolt when trying to fit the ARB that I got.

*EDIT, Boab to the rescue with a pair of these. Cheers Boab

13mm bit I broke with my uber manliness

Chopped out the grotty bit

Accidentally chopped into this as it wasn't where it was supposed to be (explains the damp boot though)

Good as new, well untill I fit a replacement

Welded in the petrol filler flap after treating the bit behind

Had a slight "incident" with the grinder jumping up and biting me. Was pretty lucky as these things go tbh

Battled to get the front wings off as some numpty had welded them on at the bottom.

Treated the inner sill for time being until I get the replacement end cap bit.

He still doesn't know his 10mm from his 11mm spanners

Picked up this courtesy of David, bit rough around the edges but think I can make it look even better, cheers David

Test fitted my wings, as you can see I'm going for an E30 M3 inspired look, suffice to say there will be some "fettling" required.

Rear all smoothed, no too bad for being in the grittiest dusty workshop in the land

Carrying on with the tidying up the rest of it

Right, haven't been able to get up to the lock up due to the slightly inclement weather, well I got all the way there and then thought. It was a nightmare to get up here and it's still snowing, how will I get back? Stopped to help a few folks who were stuck but decided to knock it on the head, drove home and got proper stuck outside my carpark  :embarassed: Feds and a group of guys helped push me free, Karmic balance restored.

So what I did the other night..

Old with the new

Shiney shiney new brake lines and flexies. All going swimmingly...

 Aw, B@stard B0llocks Bugg3r and fcuk...

In case you are wondering that is penetrating fluid and had been soaked previously, used all the techniques, still snapped though.

So started drilling it out

Got bored drilling it out and found one of these 280mm's lurking at the back of the lock up in a kinda Blue Peter stylee.

This is now fitted up, just need to get the system flushed out and topped off with some off this stuff

And we're back in the game... :D

All unions copper greased to ease removal in future. Think I'll paint up calipers to match come summer time but for now I just want working brakes. Will recondition other calipers and either punt or keep as spares.

Cheers for looking, more when weather clears up.

Went up other night to do a bit more, my Golf manual unfortunately got soaked as it somehow ended up on the floor of the workshop

Found this in my toolbox, yup that IS ice...

drip from the ceiling onto inner wing, gotta love leaks and winter...

Broke my back about 6yrs ago in a car accident and it has flared up again as result of shoveling snow and pushing cars. Had to call it a night after nipping up the brake lines. Will pick up a bleed kit and get on it when I can move without making old man noises.

Still laid up but can't keep a good Dubber down. Was rummaging in the spare room and happened across this.

Decided to smooth it out and turned it into this

Much better I think you'll agree. Off to munch some more painkillers...

Mmmm, pain killers

Feeling much improved but work and life in general seems to get in the way of getting proper stuck into the Golf, however there has been progress...

My 4-wire Lambda turned up after delays with the snow

As did my stainless steel h/t bolts

Test fitted my strutbrace I got with the car, suffice to say it fouls the master cylinder

Got stuck in about the rear arch

Chopped off the rotten bit of sill too

Clean up and treated the metal behind then got on with stiching in some new metal

looked like this when tacked in place

Called it a night at that

So I got a bit side tracked and built this to help when I'm airbrushing

Then I got on with what I was supposed to be doing, sill taked in place.

bead welded and ground down

Got an idea for a grill I picked up so primed this in preperation, only seen one other like it and that was in Germany

Removed a whole load of useless wiring, I did double check that the car still starts.

Stripped the interior out a bit to get at the rusty floor panel

Light above

Light below, fred flinstone eat your heart out

The best kind of tea an biscuits? Unsolicited ones.

Had a grotty bit of sill here too

Marked it out

Cheers guys, unfortunately things aren't going too well at the moment, having to rethink the welding in the floor as it was supposed to be straight forward patch repair but has been anything but.

I will update more when I've done a bit more worth updating.

Reet, few things arrived in the post over the past few days.

Perhaps a little ahead of schedule but it was a bargain so had to get it, completely unmolested, all sensors and even has a new filter in it.

Got my new compressor from my folks as a b'day present so kudos to them.

Got one of these, 420lbs of torque. Nice.

Bought myself one of these, apparently the hose is guaranteed....forever

My BBS caps have seen better days so I found some suitable OEM ones I had lying around from another project for time being.

And in our spot the difference round, all replaced with VAG oem bits, bar the poly bits, which cost less than expected.

Finally got round to start stripping the wishbones that I got off Boab.

But more on them later...

Right was hoping to have this MOT'd, it failed

Front nearside wing repeater missing
Front offside wing repeater missing
Rear nearside wheel bearing excessive play
Rear offside wheel bearing excessive play
Fuel pump loose
Incomplete weld within 30cm of body mounting (not my welding I hasten to add)

So, people who say that you can get through an MOT with smoothed wings on a post '87 are talking balls. That was even with Alex talking to an MOT tester friend of his to double check that it'd be ok.

So in process of reinstating wing repeaters, albeit mk3 items as it'l go with my ABF if/ when i fit it.

Sorted the wee bit of sill that was ropey, this was the welding from a "professional body shop," that was previously hidden by the 90 spec body kit. Anyhoo I've sorted their bodge and think that this will hope fully be he last of them. They were the ones who put the sunroof drain in the boot, which I've reinstated correctly now. See if people just did their jobs properly....
See below

Mk3 indicators in a mk2 wing, will post up some pic's when I'm a bit further on. Anybody else seen it done before?
I've subsequently tinted the indicators as the orange ones are horrid.

Naff new door handles, but at least I can now lock my car... Hurrah!

Will be booked for a retest in none too distant future.

Seroius amount of bodywork & other stuff going on there, but you're certainly getting through it!

Shame after smoothing the side-repeaters, that you had to weld new recesses in. As my nw G60 wings didn't have any holes in and I have Wolfsburg badges, I pulled through the side repeater looms to under the plastic scuttle and just gaffer-tape them to the tops of the wings for the MOT. I originally did pass an MOT without any, but had to use a new testing station when I made the car lower and was unable to drive up the ramps, so had to find a new testing station with flushed in ramps which unfortunately failed it with no side-repeaters! Gaffer-taped them to the wing for the MOT, then stuffed them back under the scuttle for the rest of the time!

Yeah, there'll only be enough of the original car left so I don't have to put it throgh an SVA test

The idea of the taped repeaters it was considered, but this way I don't have to worry about it again come MOT time and it's a wee bit different too.

Wow not posted in here for while...

Haven't had much luck getting the car MOT'd as been really busy and weather has been crap for working outside but will post up what I've been up to.

Reet, so situation it's failed MOT on the brakes. Was in the garage to get the brakes done, ergo I returned to the garage to get the brakes redone. I'm going to chance my mitt and ask if they'll MOT it too as it failed on the brakes that they did. Unlikey but at the mo I'm 80.00 out of pocket and no MOT.
My mate very kindly lent me his brake nipper to test out a theory. Think I have narrowed it down but more on that when I get it but as I don't want to incriminate myself on a public forum we'll leave it at that :D

Some pic's from being in the first time

Wow, been a wee while. Still looking like a sack of the proverbial but happily munching motorway miles

Ok so I'm stock piling parts at the moment. Ordered

1 x 6283MC (10x638mm) V-Belt (power steering)
1 x 6218MC (10x950mm) V-Belt (Alternator)
2 x 03674 Wheel Bearing Kit, Rear
2 x 03662 Wheel Bearing Kit
2 x 03548 Ball Joint Kit
2 x 03544 Mount Sleeve
1 x 24374 Wishbone Bolt Kit

Car just ticked over 120k on the KR last week and was treated to an oil and spark plug change.

Got my welded wishbones and R32 bushes to fit, need to prep my new subframe too.

Plan is to replace belts and bearings as staying narrow track car is coverin approx 1200miles a month at the mo' so plan is to get everything ready and just whip in and out keeping down time to a minimum. Famous last words.

Have another list of ABF bits to order but that will wait till pay day.

Over engineered a bracket to mount my gear linkage. Hope it fits as don't have the gearbox handy to test it. Time will tell.
