Title: Now I know why I fell out with VW last time
Post by: andykram on 24 June 2010, 17:26
Don't get me wrong, I still love the car and still faultless other than the door knocking noise many of you seem to have had.
But the dealers? Dear oh dear. I fell out with VW last time when the dealers couldn't fix my Mk4s. The latest  thing is that I rang round 5 dealers yesterday to get a quote for the first annual service on the current car. I eventually got qutes off four but what a rigmarole. Every service department I spoke to was a woman and I'm not being sexist here but none of them had a clue.
Most wanted my reg plate before they could give me a quote but because I have a private plate and can't remember the original 09 plate they couldn't quote. I asked them what difference it made, it's just a Mk6 Golf GTi. "What engine is that sir?" "210 TFSi I would say" "AH a 110 FSi " came the reply from one and so on and so on. It was like pulling teeth. None of them had any knowledge of the product or had the capacity to think independently from the computer in front of them.
And the fifth? Never rang me back yesterday and busy today.
I always contrast this with my wife's Saab dealer who know us by name, can tell me anything or everything I need to know, always beat or match any other quotes I have (including independents) and, most importantly, ring when they say they're going to ring. How hard can it be?
And what's really bugging me at the moment is that Leeds VW are cheapest so far and I really don't want to give them any business for having a bunch of useless t**** salesmen and generally having a crap reputation.

 Most people I encounter with a computer are like this - they lose the ability to think independently.

They (VW) pay peanuts so they get monkeys.

Have you tried JCT600 in Wakefield ?   I've found there service to be much much better than VW Leeds,  and I've never looked back since changing to them.   Book early enough and they have always given me a courtesy car for free.

They are no worse paid than other brands. Well not round here anyway.

Theres a reason they call 'people' in dealer workshops who work on your cars 'Tech's' now and not mechanics.

And that boils my p1ss!
It took me 6 years to become a properly qualified Technician...and a semi-skilled grease monkey who changes the oil is a Tech after 2 weeks training and with no formal education. Hmm...

^Ditto.

They do some formal training  if you can call it that  i did subaru's dealer tech course back in the 90s but i classed myself as a self trained mechanic not a tech  as i could fault find and diagnose problems due to experience/car hobby and my Engineering backgrounds. (it was a family main dealership chain at the time i use to help out at weekends when not studying/working as the trained chimps just kept saying computer says no  or its not in the book  )

They are on my list of people to call tomorrow, along with VW HUddersfield. I got the R32 from Wakey and they have always been quite good as far as I can remember. I just know that £245 for 2hrs work is a rip!!

Edited my poor spelling...
It's because I'm at work, being a Technician you see, and rushing. Honest. :lipsrsealed:

You could pay £299 and then that pays for your next two services based on time and distance, every 12 months or 10,000 miles. Then take the car where ever you want! It will include your brake fluid change aswell : )

Would that still be available to me now? regardless of where the car was from?

JCT 600 VW in Hull did my 1st service for £93.62+vat (£110) i think all JCT's should be the same as they are the same group

Give them a try

Off the top of my head Leeds was £135 so I don't know why they're quoting you £200 odd R32. I also rang Barnsley, Wakefield and Sthingyhorpe and they were all equally clueless but all within £140 to £150. It's only a first service oil and filter change after all. Maybe they're quoting you for the first long life service R32?
The bottom line is they don't have a clue.
I'd also happily pay the £299 for three year's service if I could but since that came in months after I got mine just assumed the offer wouldn't be open to me.

Wakey are ok, don't bother ringing Huddersfield, they struggle every time to do the smallest things and they are very arrogant. It annoys me with the workers because if they just hired someone like me who knows the ins and outs of VWs more or less I could put most of them to shame. 110 FSI? Wtf

I was told its £245 because I am approaching 15k i.e. on long life service.

Can anyone confirm this? I know the oil costs marginally more but does it involve more work?

I thought VW used the same oil regardles now. Or they did a while back with the mk5 iirc the VW bullettin to the dealerrs.

You could be right but VW make it sound differently on their Service regimes (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regimes) "This LongLife regime has been made possible due to the development of new Volkswagen engines with the latest technically advanced longlife oil"

Finally got in touch with Donny. They're doing it for £95 and I finally spoke to someone who vaguely had a clue.
Anyway, duly booked plus free courtesy car. Job's a good 'un, assuming they have mechanics who know what to do!!!!!

Will be interesting to see how we find Donny and Huddersfield R32. They can't be any worse than Leeds though!!!!!

Agreed! They only treat me nice at hudds because I have had 3 cars into repair there... at a total cost of about 10k so they do like me

They are meant to only use LL/Synthetic oil, although there are some who still buy in semi-synthetic stuff. Looks like it all comes down to cost.
