Flushed out and replaced oil, changed filter etc. Engine has been getting too hot, found the thermostat to be the culprit but also i have now noticed the oil cooler doesnt seem to be doing anything!... the engine was stood for some so this is the first time i've noticed. am i right in thinking there is a thermostat for this too when the oil reaches a certain temp? cooler and hoses are always stone cold. any ideas?

Then no I don't think there is a stat mate. theres deffo not one on KR engines (I know mk2 but ive never owned a mk1 engined mk1 :grin:)

Thermostat in the oil filter housing is rated 110 deg. Either you ain't hitting that temp or it's stuck closed which is quite common. Pop over to the MKI site as theirs some good threads on there about refurbing the thermostat as new ones are no longer available.
The reason I know all this? I have one fitted to my MKII. :cool:

thought as much and yes its defo hitting temp to open if it wanted to... hmmmm, can it be run without the stat, i know it would take longer to warm up... ive already taken the water stat out for now which has helped loads!

Yeah you could run it without but you'll have to be really careful on warm up. If it's getting that hot though it should stink and the engine bay be cooking. You sure your temp gauge is working OK?

not a good idea to have it without a stat, particularly in the cold weather. engine will take an age to get up to temp, moire engine wear and more fuel etc. if cooling system appears fine without it then stat was dead or the waterpump is weak, or perhaps as said gauge over-reading. do you have oil temp display and if so what was it saying? what temp did the dash gauge show?

yeah i know its probably not worth going down that route as its not really that necessary unless bewing driven super hard, just not happy when something isnt working. believe it not, after my complete rewire the only things i cant get to work is the MFA and the temp gauge (reads max all the time) so am just guessing that its too hot. it gets up to temp really quick, even the cam cover is really hot!... just assumed that the oil cooler should be kicking by then!? i also know its not running right, needs tuning, fuelling is all wrong which wont help matters...

cam cover will get bloody hot when its up to temp, oil temp will usually sit around 90degrees which is around the boiling point of water after all ;)
if gauge is sat at max that means your wire is earthed somewhere or the sensor is duff. the temp sensor wire is red/yellow

hmmm so maybe still not enough to trigger oil cooler then?.... yeah you helped me out loads while i was having my fun with wiring! I ended up moving on for a bit as i was having nightmares and suspected some of the senders to be duff. on this note though, whats the sender in the exspantion tank doing?
