I know I've said it a bajillion times, but how you can give up such a wonderfull frighteningly good (did I use enough buzz words there) gearbox for a set of I'll drive for you taxi paddles is a mystery to me.

DSG is awesome! This is my car without a clutch. I only used a week to get used to it. Well maybe because I drove a lot when I finally got my car. I love to be able to stick it in D on boring traffic jams and using manual mode when I'm out for a spirited drive. The sound it makes during up and downshifts is just addicting. Love it! I was really torn between manual and DSG but I don't regret my choice at all.

At first I found the DSG on the MK VI quite different (not so good in "D") as on the MK V.
On the MK V the "switch-moments" were better choosen (my opinion) so before the remapping I had to be a lot more alert with the gaspedal to get a fluent drive (when driving comfortably in "D" ).
Happy for me after the remapping the car was performing a lot more fluid and comfortable with all revs so it solved that problem as a bonus....remapping gets definitely the best out of DSG !!!
-
I use manual mode around town, because the auto mode is always hunting between 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Yes, the DSG box is good, but IMHO it's not nearly as good as most people - including motoring journalists - make out. The new generation 7-speed 'proper' automatics from the likes of BMW and Mercedes are far superior in terms of smoothness.
My main gripe is how it changes down too far when I floor the throttle. It will go from 5th or 6th to 2nd at about 40mph, which is madness, especially with a remap: lots of embarassing engine screaming, and the traction control flicking in and out 50 times a second :embarassed:
-
....maybe you should get an official ABT remap.....(sorry could not resist)
I honestly have none of the problems you described
The DSG is brilliant....the "D" is in remapped-condition even as good as "S" in the normal GTI but without the drama....

Must be very thirsty Erik???

Give me a break...I just finished my first BBQ of this year with a sweater on....speaking of a "Die-Hard"......Vino kept me alive
I paid (indirectly) way too much for this re-mapping (3035 euro incl lease ) so I am entitled to have a bit of fun every now and then don't you think...... :smug:
-
Erik what MPG are you getting on your car?
-
...one of the benefits of leasing....all is paid (by me) in a 4 year advance so it does not bother me...in other words I do not look...

Flash geezer!! just tell us what your getting to the gallon

I used the sports mode the other day on a late-evening drive on quiet country roads, and it really was very nice indeed. I didn't notice any hesitation about the lower gear changes which happens sometimes in D. The petrol consumption looked OK at the time on the MFD, but I did have to fill up earlier than usual.
I didn't use the paddles at all though. What's the difference between S and D if you're using the paddles anyway? I'd have thought, if you were controlling where the gear changes happen, there wouldn't really be any difference.
I sometimes find it disconcerting when the car decides to change gear when I'm not expecting it, but I seldom bother to use the paddles. Part of it is familiarity, or lack of it. Decades of using a clutch and gear-stick make the paddles non-intuitive. I should probably take the trouble to drive in manual mode exclusively for a while, just to accustom myself to the different (and far easier) way of changing gear.
I love the DSG for overtaking. Deciding to go Right Now and just doing it, without having to think about which gear to change down to or when to change back up, and being able to keep both hands on the wheel the whole time, and my concentration on the road and the other vehicles, it's brilliant.
I occasionally miss the control the clutch pedal gives at very low speeds, and especially during all the ice - I got in a bit of trouble a couple of times, and not being able to select second gear manually is just insane. But mostly, it's great.
And then again, I bashed one foot a month ago, and it's still quite sore. Unfortunately it's the right one, but I do have the option of resting it and driving with the left for a bit, which is really helpful. If I'd had to have the foot in plaster, the DSG might have made all the difference between being mobile and being stuck in the house.

Always enjoy your comments Rolfe.
(Even if i don't agree and think DSG is a glorified auto box which will never be as good as a manual).

On a more serious note, when I drive mine, I am 99% on manual mode. I enjoy using the paddles to shift up and down, and if going round a corner, then I use forward and back on the gear-stick.
I really like my DSG.
-
no sport mode on yours & no launch control!!
Sport mode = me!
Launch control = me!
I love me, me, me, me, me, me! ....... 6 times!
-
so how do you use launch control ?
-
Never buy a manual secondhand.
The DSG avoids over revving.
It just takes one daft change down to knacker an engine.

Watch the revs and watch the starts
Even so imo the only people to give a rats ass about 0-60 are the idiot boy racers. There pointless figures and if your driving your R like that well your an idiot, and good luck with the transmission and engines as your going to need it from the amount of heldex's ive seen dropped on dealership workshop floors over the years.
This guy on the autocar forum has a point imo
I must admit I am watching with some trepidation the removal of more and more control from the driver in modern automobiles. This is contributing to the general decrease in skill in the driving population and an attitude on the car will save you rather than you the driver try to save yourself.

How right he is!
Drivers in the USA are a case in point. They could not even control a Prius which is no hot rod!
