I was just after a quick reference into which one is quicker.
I own a '99 Astra mk4 1.6 Envoy 3door
Info: 115mph top end
0-60 = 12.5 secs
250-300 miles per tank
(http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs278.snc1/10526_139739501708_687606708_2631563_706930_n.jpg)
It pulls really well for my first car, and I am looking into getting a mk2 Golf 1.8 GTI 5 door
(http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q54/youlnvrgess09/DSC00159.jpg)
I was just wondering what the comparisons would be on acceleration (estimate) and mileage, stuff like that.
Cheers

I know about the cred, hence why I didnt ask "URRR, WHICH ONE IS COOLER?"
That's why I am buying one. I generally was wondering about the performance side of things, seeing as its 20 years old.

I average 30mpg round town and I like to drive her "Enthusiastically"
Top end the GTi is quicker and I think the 0-60 is too... But you have t allow that a 20 year old bog standard car is not going to be as fast as when it was new... But they also say that it take a Golf GTi 90K to get run in...
If you want more its easy to upgrade...
You also have to weigh up Insurance, a Mk2 can be done on a classic policy with Ltd mileage...
Parts are cheap and on the whole easy to get... and you can work on it yourself without having to be a mechanic... good set of spanners, socket set & some screwdrivers...
Needless too say a computer to get on here to find out what to do with the tools...
Haynes manual helps too...

Im looking at getting her upgraded and atleast "cleaned" up before driving her fully.
Im paying 220 on my Astra atm Fully Comp, so 1.8GTI 3rd Party is cheaper. Its about 180. How much different is it on a classic policy?
Yea, parts are quite easy to find, I need to fit new parts straight off the back, and its coming with the Haynes Manual. My dad used to be a mechanic so I got all the tools of the trade, and some experience up my sleeve.
I wanted a car to play with, my Astra is too, "wrapped up" in technology and plastic.
-
classic policy will limit your miles and insist on it being garaged.
I've insured the valver for 5k miles fully comp for £200. But must be garaged ona night if at home
-
the golf will be 4 secs quicker to 60 and 9mph faster top end :afro:
-
That astra will feel like a snail after you have drove a gti, i dont belive these mk2s loose any bhp with age TBH. I think they get better with age:laugh:. mine is just short of 92k on the clock. ive no history but had verbal conformation of genuine miles. every time i floor it, i smile from ear to ear. Its a big engine, weighs less than a ton, no cat, no pas. Its a posh go cart that is loads of fun. and reliable too
As for insurance, £135 fully comp, classic car ins, 4k limit, and parked on drive, and they wasnt interested in an alarm LOL. lancaster insurance, but im nearly 40
only thing that pisses me off is £205 tax a year!!!!

Tax will be £0 for you in 4 years.
I know several VW mechanics and all of them say that the golf engine doesn't run in for about 30K, obviously VW never said that as no one would ever buy a new one!!
I'm from the early '70s too, but as I have an Aussie wife (who has driven longer than me, but as she chose to take the driving test rather than exchange her Oz license, only counts as having a license for 6 months!) my 3rd party & theft is nearly £600 with only 4000 miles. That was the cheapest quote I got (elephant) others wanted between 1000 and 1600 quid!
-
Sounds like a bit of a daft question to me... especially after you quoted the Astra 0-60 time of 12.5 seconds. Did you really think a GTI would be slower than that??
Even a Mk4 Golf 2.slow would edge the Astra
Nice Golf by the way - mine's exactly the same - 5-door, pearl grey - just a year younger
-
you will feel a huge difference mate! I did when I went from a 1.6 mk2 to an 8v mk3.
-
i had the same shape astra but a 1.8 Sport for a short while inbetween golfs. It was a piece of cr@p looking back. my white mk1 which was standard with 127k miles on would have whipped the astra back to plastic unreliablility land where it belonged (sorry).......
That mk2 would do the same.... you won't regret it at all.
PS, if you get it, do you wanna sell me the wheels?
-
Tax will be £0 for you in 4 years.
Really????????
Tax exempt scheme stopped about 2 years ago. Cars that were at least 25 years old back then were exempt (and still are) but cars that have had there 25th birthday since still have to be taxed.
-
I knew someone who had a sri astra like that and it was brand new at the time. Felt quite nippy but did not stand a chance against my mates 8v gti with 185,000 miles on, even with a head start it was loads slower.
All these years and they ve learnt nothing.
-
Well I havent got a garage and I will be doing over 4k in a year, and im only 18 so any insurance quote is gonna be sky high anyway!
I knew it would be quicker, i just wanted to know by how much. The thing is the Astra is newer, where technology can squeeze more power out of the engine. The mk2 is just raw, nothing to worry about in between the pedal and the engine.
I know, I feel car companies are going, well backwards tbh. VW saying there going back to GTI roots with the Mk6, but its drabbed down with so much tecnology and plastic, its nothing compared to the old mk1/mk2's.
So, lets just say im gonna be swept off my feet when I drive my mk2 hard for the first time then compared to my Astra
-
dont think you would get a classic policy at your age either

I think it has to be build pre Jan 1st 1973 actually, the rollover stopped way back.
-

Yea I doubt they would allow it, unless the car was completely stock and covered with a Fully Comp policy, and I had another car to drive.
Im looking at picking it up in the next couple of weeks, just trying to get the seller to MOT it before selling it.

Ahhh. News to me. But apparently the car has to now be built before '73.

And on wiki it says not 2 years ago but '97!
Various classes and uses of vehicle are provided with a tax disk without charge.
Vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are eligible for a free vehicle licence under the "Historic Vehicles" legislation. This is due to the age of the vehicle and a presumption of limited mileage. Initially this was a rolling exemption applied to any vehicles over 25 years old, however the cutoff date was frozen in 1997. The change to "pre-1973" was unpopular in the classic motoring press, and a number of classic car clubs are campaigning for a change back to the previous system.[citation needed] In 2006 there were 307,407 vehicles in this category.

So now I know, I stand corrected.
-
So I am looking at a Valver now.
I can't imagine that is much quicker than a normal 8v.
Headliner is sagging and previous owner has already tried to reglue so looking at a new one, but DAMN for 77quid it's a lot. (New)
-
id rather have my mk3 astra 2.0 16v sport back i swapped for this 2.0 8v...drives better handles better cheaper to run and a f*** load faster

A 16v bit quicker than an 8v. The power band on the valver means that you have to rev harder to get the results. So the benefits with the 8v are better MPG and a smoother delivery across the rev range so it's better around town.
-
if only I seen this thread before I removed parts from the car lol
I am in yeovil and have one, 3dr in the same colour, I dont do ragging and my rev counters not working but could of taken you for a quick spin just to give you a rough idea, wont be ragging the tits out of it tho, past all that and think these cars should be pootled around in and cleaned lots lol.

no no no
you can rev it harder, you don't have to
less power usually means better mpg

So I am guessing the power is still there, just put your foot down a little more to get to it?
Well anyway, Im going to view it tonight, fingers crossed everything checks out ok.
-
check everything mate, electrics, archs, any rattles, noises etc, rear windscreen wiper working, front wiper and heater working, look out for any bodge work!
What time you going to look at it, and where is it too... would come along if you wanted
-
Im going in about 45 mins, nah that's ok but thanks anyway. Im bringing my Dad along who was a mechanic for 20+ years.
Ill bring up anything I see on here.

good luck

I believe it was Labour that reintroduced road tax, when they got into power in 97.....

Ive just got a 16v, with the 2.0l in it theres plenty of enough torque for normal driving, dont need to go above 3k revs when driving like my nan, but i could imaging the 1.8 needing the revs.. The insurance for the 8v is much cheaper, im paying about £600 more a 16v lol.
-
Yea Im looking at finding an 8v if i cant keep paying the insurance on this one.
Its 1K more than my Astra 1.6
-
hahaha £250 fully comp
-
quote "Tax will be £0 for you in 4 years." am i right in thinking that this isnt true?
i was told that is only applies to cars registered up to 1974?
-
Think that was covered earlier in the post lol. if im getting muddled with another post, then no it doesnt work like that, just cars before 1974 dont get taxed.
-
I will have to pay tax, Labour reintroduced it to cars of this age.
Im hopefully getting around 2k for my Astra.
-
Astra is down to 1700. Losing sight of the Golf =[
Labour is gone so maybe they will reintroduce the old tax system?
-
Also, I have noticed that some mk2 models have panel wheel arches, instead of the plastic covered wheel arches. Am I right to think I could just easily take off the plastic to reveal the steel panels?
hard to explain
without the plastic - (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3265/2775311952_28c7f1246b.jpg)
With - (http://blogs.timeslive.co.za/wheeldeal/files/2009/02/golf-gti.jpg)
Now seeing the Images it seems like a pretty dumb question >.<
But just checking.
And of course I would have to "attack" any rust which is hidden behind them.
-
But why would you wanna take 'em off...
Seems daft to me as it's what made the GTI stand out from base models... Unless they are shagged cos they are expensive to buy - so I am told (£70.00 an arch)...

Didnt realise they were special to the GTI's.

Syncro, GTI and later Drivers...
AFAIK
-
My ex police astra mk4 died at 114k.
My golf gti is still going strong at 160k. Even after thrashing at a track day.
My golf feels a lot quicker and a lot sportier. Its slightly less fuel efficient but it'll be worth it when other mk2s flash their lights at you.
Get the Golf. You won't regret it.
-
I definetly will get the Golf now, its just waiting for my Astra to sell. My Astra is a real nice car, dont get me wrong - Smooth, but I just want a Golf!!!!
-
you got this car now? keep seeing an identical car to your sig flying around Yeovil, if it was you or your Mrs, then my step Daughter was waving at your Mrs/wife/mum the other day thinking it was her mum lol
-

Yea, probably around Yeovil, around McDonalds and/or through town. My mrs cant drive, but she may of been in it!
-
around stiby road
-
If that's up near the college then no, not up that way.
-
Whoever said they don't lose power then they definitately do - All engines do, standard procedure.
I've done a sh!t load of work to mine and only seeing 117.4 - People seem to think adding a cam equals 10bhp, then an exhaust, add another 5bhp - then a filter, add another 2bhp is just bull crap - Just so you know :afro: Lol
-
It all works and adds up but only if you drive a Honda and sit in car parks talking bout how the "modified intake" gives it ten more brake
-
I would never splash out cash just for 5bhp more, if I would ever spend money on horsepower upgrades I would just stick another engine in there! Here she is, outside my house =]

I thought you was buying a 5 door mate, looks just like ours. What you doing to it.?
-
Just fixing all the things that are wrong first, got another 24 things to do! (small things, sunroof felt, fog light, mfa screen, etc...) then we will see. I am not really sure yet. I want to keep it as standard as possible, then do things under the hood to surprise people. Maybe lower it a little more.
