I want to fit my Fiscon microphone in the factory place, which is in the overhead light unit, but I don't know how to remove it. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

I spoke to FISCON about this and they advised me it was not a good idea to fit their microphone in the overhead light unit as it would not perform adequately. The best place is on the 'A' pillar.
This is because the FISCON microphone is 'passive' and is unlike the 'active' microphone VW fit in the overhead light unit. The 'active' microphone has greater sensitivity.

Have a look on http://www.my-gti.com/
Not sure but maybe something on there mate, I'm out at the moment so can't check for you

Dead easy, just slip a credit card in and the unit pops out.
-
Thanks for the replies.
I've seen the page on the Fiscon site that shows how to do it. If they show how to do it, I reckon it must be okay!
I tried to slip a credit card in but it wouldn't budge. Are there no screws holding it up there?
-
No screws.
Give me 20 minutes and I'll take some pics as I'm bored anyway

The VW Fiscon instruction manual has a big red square in it with the following inside: NOTE: Regarding to the voice quality do not fit the microphone covered inside the interior light.
I'll probably fit mine in there too because I don't want a naff looking mic on display. If callers moan about the quality, then I guess I'll move it.

Thanks. Managed to get the light cover and the one where the microphone goes off. Can't get the one off where the alarm sensors are. I think I need to get the whole black plastic unit out, so I can then take the 2 screws out to be able to feed the microphone in under the headliner...

Strange that they have this page then:

They show you how to do it, but don't recommend it:
When the microphone is properly fitted, a very good sound quality can be achieved. We guarantee the best sound quality but only when the microphone is fitted in a visible location.
-
Fair enough. I still want it there though.

Me too
Like I said a few posts ago... it will be going and staying there unless I get a lot of complaints!

Ah right. I don't think you need that other lot off. The square where the microphone should go has access into the roof lining. I was able to poke some wire from the square to at least half way along the roof lining. Try feeding something along that way rather than from the A pillar to the middle.
To be honest I don't know why you are bothering. I have the Mic on the top of the A pillar and it is crystal clear from there. Most folk don't believe I am driving when I tell them.
-
Thanks! I just don't want the microphone on show...
-
I know you have the surrounds off but this might help others.
Just slide a credit card in between the lights and the 2 squares section.
Slide it along and the clips will pop
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad28/p3asa1/IMG_3430.jpg)
Slide it the other way and the other side will come off. It should now just lift off.
Leaving you this:
This is the section that has just come off. See how it has no clips to break
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad28/p3asa1/IMG_3436.jpg)
The light section is exactly the same. Put it in and slide to the side
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad28/p3asa1/IMG_3433.jpg)
then the other way
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad28/p3asa1/IMG_3434.jpg)
popping off to leave you this.

Many thanks. Unfortunately, despite getting those off, and also rest of the unit, it doesn't seem possible to get the microphone through the headliner to this console. Has anyone managed it?
-
I expected the foam bit for putting the mic in to be above the drivers side...
-
How would you get the wire of the microphone down to the back of the head unit ?
-
feed inside to edge of headlining, just on the inside edge of the lining, down the a-pillar and behind the dash to the headunit.

Thats a fairly long way down, the wire would start to have a mind of its own and would wonder off ? Maybe attach the end of the wire to something more ridgid and feed it down that way ?
-
Routing down to the stereo is easy. But getting the microphone into the light console seems impossible...

Does the fiscon instructions not help ?
-
I used an old wire coat hanger as a `fishing line`, just unravelled it all and bent the end over to hold the wire. if you`re carefull the front edge of the headliner will pull down a little with your fingertips, then down the A piller and I just took mine through the fuse box and accross to the headunit - using the fishing line there too.
Hope that helps....
-
Does the fiscon instructions not help ?
Nope, because they don't really recommend installing the microphone in this place.

So are you saying you have the microphone actually inside the light console?

I did it in my MK5 into the overhead light, and I'll do it in my MK6 in a couple of weeks (hopefully!!)
I'll take some pics and do a 'How to fit and code a fiscon kit' and 'how to fit and code an RNS510' guide!

Thats not what you said, you said 'getting the microphone into the light console seems impossible' - So I asked if the Fiscon instructions helped.... do you fancy aswering that question ?

I thought I had. No, they don't help, because Fiscon don't recommend doing it (therefore, they don't tell you how to do it in detail).

I simply don't understand why he is bothering as it is not going to work.
A total waste of time and energy.
-
If done properly it does work. I would imagine the plastic fascia would have to be cut though.
-

I had 2 different car kits in my MK5 - an Alpine one and a Parrot one... both with the Mic in the light assembly, and both with crystal clear quality. I don't want to see my Mic, hence why I am going to try. IF the sound is rubbish, then I'll move it.
Fiscon have 2 sets of instructions - one showing you how to do it, and another saying not to do it. Odd!
As the Fiscon kit uses a 3.5mm jack on the end of the mic, you could probably buy a better mic and fit it if you really wanted.
-
Still a waste of time and energy!

Almost as big a waste of time as trying to retrofit xenons when you could have paid for them out of the factory

Catty!
Not quite.
I checked this before deciding on my options. £700 cheaper!
Anyway, I might not bother.

A bit like your reply then.
Is it so hard to understand that I don't want the microphone on show?
-
I still dont have a clue how you can get it from the roof to the back of the headunit.
If your sitting in your drivers seat, look up, you see the lights. so you feed the cable down to the left hand side till you get to the doorframe, it goes down there ? down to just above the pedals then up to the back of the headunit ? Thats the only way I can work out, and I'll be a jocks auntie if I can workout how to feed that through there.
-
Mine isnt a Fiscon, but a wire is a wire
So...from the headunit feed the wire to the right through the gap, take it accross the back of the dash to come out in the fuse box area. feed it up the right hand A pillar trim, accross the front of the headliner (tuck it in) and if you`re careful you can prise the headliner down just enough to feed it accross to the light switch.
Going begind the dash and going from the front of the headliner to the light is where I used my `fishing line` I mentioned earlier.
-
Have you fitted your Fiscon yet Kev? If so, where is the mic just now?
Like I said earlier - give me 2 weeks (hopefully) and I'll do you a step by step idiots guide with pretty colour pics

Hmm, learn by doing

Hmm, learn by doing
I've got a specc'd out £30k car, not a two bob run about that I'm doing up. But yeah, lets rip the roof lining off and start poking about sh!t when I aint got a clue just so that I learn.
-
Oooh, you`re an angry young man !
I already described where to route the wire, besides doing it for you, I dunno how much more help you need???
Chillax dude
..or pay someone to do it for you.

Not angry, just in disbelief. I've never heard anyone say learn by doing before. All those car mechanics just turned up on the job one day and their boss told em to just learn to fix them by doing it. Here on earth, I think people are trained or shown what to do so they learn. Might be wrong through.
-
I actually did laugh out loud!
Aye keV, I'm on the same planet as you. Training can take many forms, vocal, visual, written...oh wait, that's what you've been given!
I guess that's why so many people buy Haines workshop manuals, gotta get their hands dirty sometime.
Honestly, if you don't want to DIY, then pay someone.
Simples.
Anyway, be as sarky as you want, I'm bored now so won't even wasting my time checking in on this thread again.

Sorry Kev, you're wrong. Training gives you the basics. You learn by doing - it's called experience.
-
I 'learn by doing' too. I've never had any training in changing car stereos, taking the interior apart etc, but I just have a go!
I'll have a go at anything if I think its possible... and if I mess it up, then I'll pay to get it fixed!
Forums provide knowledge, but someone has to 'have a go' before they can relay on their knowledge!
Its all good fun.
I got an ED30 3 almost 3 years ago, and within 1 day of owning I'd changed the aerial from a bee sting to a sharkfin, fitted an Alpine stereo, canbus adapter & bluetooth kit, hacked holes inside my ashtray and hard wired a micro road pilot... and a few days later removed the bumper and glove box to fit the laser pilot detector!
No pain, no gain

Thanks mate, however i thought those instructions were pish. I dono what it is about people when they make up instructions for others to follow, some people are good (they make good idiots guides) and others are just sh!t and assume.

Looks a bit over complicated for me!
It might be ANOTHER 2 weeks until I can do an 'easy' one since my cars still waiting at the bl00dy docks!!!
