cool project though

if it were still the golf running gear, your geekery may have been justified.. but as quattro is essentially a brand description rather than the name of the technology... and the drivetrain is completely from the S3 "quattro"... f*ck off!

I bought the 4motion from a breakers as they had bought the car to strip as the engine was knocking (bottom end fubarred).

The car wasnt category damaged or NOTHING they had just been offered it cheap  And as I know the breakers quite well they sold it me for a relatively good price!

I will take a picture tomorrow of the damage seen as everybody is so interested lol

Honestly you have no idea how close i was to jumping in the passenger seat and making you head for the bypass  I had to walk away from the door handle!

Had a thought about exhaust too - how about if they just make it go up to the R32 backbox? Should bring the price down considerably and should take them no time at all then.

Tempted but I think the back box is causing quite alot of back pressure. I think im going to just get them to do a decat and replace the back box with straight pipe but keep the middle silencer...

We'll see! Will try to find the number for them tomorrow and get a price and book it in.

Should have a video to upload on here in a bit! Managed to run a 13.94 down the pod which I was fairly pleased with given its my first time actually taking part in a drag race and the car took a real few poundings!

Think a big turbo is next on the agenda!

LOL well we had some fun...Time to go again:

I quote from another forum (ukmkivs...where unless you pay for something or have scene wheels you dont get replies)...

"Well today didn't go so well... We fitted the top mounts and they work LOVELY...however... We were packing up and just leaving for home when pop turbo shaft snapped. Chris has a picture somewhere of the shaft...

Oil went through everything, hydrolocked the cylinders...so possibly bent valves...also noticed some nice bits of metal in the inlet ports so probably need a rebore...However...when we took the plugs out and turned her over she spat all the oil out and turned over nice and smoothly. So fingers crossed not too much damage...

So from 3 in the afternoon till 9.30 ish we accomplished this...

The oil from the intercooler:

Me in a jolly mood thinking wahey big turbo...lol:

And how she is sat now...reminds me of a couple of months ago lol:

Well few updates lol

Rebuilt the engine with scat rods, new rings and honed, all new seals etc etc etc etc god the list was long and expensive. The turbo is now a hybrid KO4 with a pipewerx 3 inch downpipe and decat. I need some big injectors before getting it mapped but hopeing to hit the 300+hp mark. Time will tell!

All my seats and stuff are now in...vibratechnics engine mounts...erm fidanza billet flywheel, 5 paddle unsprung clutch, custom 3 inch stainless exhaust, Sparco pro2000 seats, securon 6 point harnesses and loads loads more...

Pictures!

And a video of the sound of the exhaust...ignore my mate laughing and ignore the fact i have a plate light out...all now fixed...including his laugh lol

It was a poor launch in the video because im still running no N75 so limited to accuator boost at 10psi.

Title: Re: Project Quattro GTI

Well had some more major problems...

The crankbolt was a stretch bolt it appears so it came slightly loose and ended up shearing the key way off the gear. This in turn messed up my exhaust valves with them all hitting my pistons.

Took the head off, sent it off to be rebuilt and polished the pistons. Put it all back together and started on 3 cyclinders...which then went down to 2 and died. Turns out the person who rebuilt the head seated two valve springs wrong and they instantly snapped two of the valves and of course more dents in the pistons......

Ended up risking it and bought a used AGU large port head off of ebay and the pistons...which came and I put straight back in and it fired up spot on.

Next was mapping, unfortunately the turbo (hybrid KO4 - 023) seems to be prown for surge and creep issues. Lots of people over on SCN are really struggling to map it using the N75 control and are resulting to MBC's. It seems if a high flow manifold is added then lots of surge occurs to until thats sorted I won't be going down that route. Anyway, Nick spent lots and lots of time on the custom mapping of this and it is now (I believe!) one of the only hybrid KO4's that is run purely on N75 control (Nice one Nick!)

Videos and pictures!

Engine bay...lots to do yet though, my other adapter finally showed up today so can start plumbing the braided parts in. N75 has to be relocated, breather system im waiting on all the oil resistant hosing to come and water coolant pipes forge stuff will be on its way after christmas is out of the way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2o7R8tkoVY

All I have to say is thanks so much to Nick for his time and effort on the mapping, I think the grin on his face was bigger than mine lol

The car really shifts now and the next upgrade will be watermeth/high flow manifold but im not going to be the guinepigg on that one. Another on SCN is having issues with major compressor surge on boost now he has upgraded the manifold so im not sure I'll be going down that route soon. To be really honest I think if I was going to the extent of a decent high flow manifold I'd go to a gt28 or similar turbo.

From the infomation I can also gather this is the ONLY hybrid KO4 unit currently mapped on N75 alone without using an MBC. That just goes to show how good Nick is at mapping cars. If I could give him ebay style feedback it would be something like....A************************* mapper, absolutly superb. Thanks again Nick, seriously made a brilliant end to my 2010, and I can only see 2011 being more fun!

Cheers for the comments Dan

I think getting Dans mapping to the state where it is today has certainly ended the year on a high note for me,  from day one I wanted only the use the n75 for boost control as this is what its for, so why spend £20 on an MBC stop major over boost and to mask poor remapping skils.

From day one Dan had input with the mapping and watched every stage come together while was making fine adjustments, and he fully understands all the time and effort going in to getting the car to perform  how it is now.   I would even go as far as saying Dan now understand the code inside map more than his last tuner and most tuners in the uk..lol

Nick

Its defo unique....

Lol no, I have almsot given up several times but end of the day a project is a project.

First head rebuild cost me £250 which was money down the drain..ended up buying a used large port head of ebay for £56 in unknown condition and rods and pistons from the same guy for £30 lol Fortunately the pistons and head were fine, one of the rods had spun so was knackered but that was all...obviously I didn't need the rods as I am stillusing my forged ones.

As per a few people on ukmkivs, any part number on that heat shield behind the turbo? Looks a lot better than anything on the normal 1.8Ts. I've scanned through ETKA but can't find anything...

Have you done a rolling launch using the R-Tech brake and boost settings which I added to your mapping?

I heard another tuner told you it could not be done??? PMSL.... They aint got a clue what I can do av they?.. :smug:   They are even telling members that launch control cannot be done with oem ecus and we are full of BS?   I cannot wait to get my AUM back on the rod, just placed an order for my new H-beam rods, when its back up and running I will be working on a 3 stage launch control using every limiter in the ecu..lol watch this space.

I will get your car on a dyno dynamic rolling road next week to finish the timing mapping and get a final power run...300bhp???

I haven't yet - I keep forgetting its there... I will go out tonight for a play though! I think I'll try get hold of a newer N75 aswell as I think that one might not be perfect still! Fingers crossed we can nail the 300hp I think Welly is running quite well now although its all gone a bit quiet over on SCN...

I also needed a starter motor for a Plymouth Fury police car i had and they got me one of them in 3days!
Great lads they are.

Mine is an auto but floor shifter with factory buckets. Its in the original (ish) colour, light blue with black stripes.

Fortunately my dad owns Stateside Autoparts so bits I need for it I can get pretty sharpish too ;)

I can't drive the car till im 25. I use to go to a lot of american car meets but they just got repetitive and the cars just got worse. America is where the decent shows happen.

Anyway, decided to have a play with something a bit different:

Get a Polo 1.8T and shove a k03 hybrid in with the mix, 0-100mph is a tad rapid and a bit hairy with 290lbft which torque steer in every gear...

Hey Dan,

Awesome to meet you today, thanks for following us back after the alternator problems! If you can upload some of the pictures you took today that would be great :) Hope your journey home doesnt take too long!

Right so, its all up and running in a fashion....it made 316hp at 13 psi. Upped the boost and it seems the alternator has given up the ghost. Car started tp run lean and then lights dimmed, clocks lost power etc...will try fix it tomorrow then play with the fueling.

Well went to RTech today to have my car checked over.. Ended up meeting Dan with the Quattro mk4 GTI.. And all i can say is the car and owner are both awesome.. totally genuine..

Started off the day with Dan not tightening up a boost pipe  :lipsrsealed: so we got that fixed back on and it went on the rollers and made 305bhp then Nick spent a bit more time fiddling with it and managed to up the duty and get it to 316bhp.. Nick said with more time mapping hes hoping to get another 50bhp out of it.. 365bhp

I went out in the car a few times and all i can say is from right low down all the way to the top of the rev range this car pulls and it pulls bloody hard.. but is still for some odd reason able to be used to cruise about in as we went Mc Donalds and the only problem was the staff not being able to hear us

Unfortunately right at the end of today the car developed a alternator related problem and started playing up.. but this as said shall be fixed tomo and hopefully Dan can have loads more fun..

I am one total jealous bastard and now miss my mk4 like fook

Well heres some pics and vids..

Hello,

Thanks to tech1889 for the hobnobs and helping me and Dan out today, I think we kept you entertained well,  with the BMW sideways action with me a the wheel, then my mate TingTongs efforts which ended up hitting a kirb and knocking the tyre off the rim... then my Top Gear method of using flammable liquids of getting the tyre back in the rim with many flames and pops....lol  then to the testing of Dan new big turbo (highlight of my week)  315bhp starting block aint bad imo....

@Dan get the aleternator fix mate and let me know how is going, I have leant you the best tuning tool for a 1.8T lemmiwinks..lol NOT.   But it will allow you to dial the fuel in for the current boost settings until I can get working back on the full code mapping.  In theory I would say with 20psi and afr around 11.8:1 should be well over 335bhp with ease.

Looking forward to next week..

By the way Dan.. your limiter fuel cut is now at 15prm per cut from 25prm we had on the last map....hehe..

Yes mate - no power meant no amps to the pump so killed the fuel. All is spot on now :D

EPC light is on and always has been...something to do with the wiring of the S3 loom and my interior loom on the car. Will eventually sort it!

Lol - generally I get about 25mpg off boost as found last night when my c clip flew off my wastegate and I had no boost the whole drive home lol....

But figure £30 - 50 miles-70 miles is a good estimate with lots of entertaining driving lol

Lean running was down to the charging fault and not amps to keeping  the fuel pump on full song.  But now is pulls like a fecking train.  Wheel spinning on the dyno around 140mph 6000rpm 350bhp, that with all extra strapping for the big turbo stuff we do..lol    We had to fully load the dyno and get the wheels spinning in 3rd gear before the power runs to get heat in the tyres.

My aim will be 370bhp 320lbft..

You got to remember I have not done any timing mapping on the car yet, just load/boost and fuel, so in theory I can drop 3psi and have more advance and still get the same power... watch this space..

Nick

Dan i need to come down and see this again i need an adrenaline rush ive been bored since last weekend.. the turbo pop ?? why was it removed ?? and your gona need new tyres soon and get that slow puncture done as you dont have a spare lol

Nice to know that the lean running was just a simple problem..

Nick at this rate your gona be pushing close to 400bhp lol

Haha feel free to come down every weekend mate. Always welcome - if you dont fancy the journey home can always come out with a couple of us on Saturday aswell lol

Removed it in less than 20 minutes earlier - as the crappy bolts I had, had come undone and the gasket literally blew in half. So better nuts and a better gasket on the way! Will be back on the road Friday night :)

bloody hell thats yet another thing you forget to do up properly lol atleast you know the turbo can be removed easy for future referance you happy with how its running at the mo or want more ??

I tihnk Nick has gone to town on this car so far with the mapping.. the back firing gear changes etc.. dont see that on many cars especially a mk4 golf lol

The car has now been sold and will be going to its new home where a new 1.8t (much more standard) will be being dropped in!

I have now bought my new project aswell - the aim of 500bhp per tonne and amazing handling has arrived!

And for reference the last time this car was on the dyno it made 368BHP and 333LB/ft of torque witha blowing manifold and running lean with the standard fuel pump...

Then I took it off the road and did loads....should have made around 380bhp but unfortunately it dropped a valve....standard valves FTL!

I was so fecked off about my dads's other halfs one. she used to know a bloke that took care of it that suddenly moved away, the pictures of it from before her and my dad met were showroom.  failed MOT on minor stuff, didn't know what to do so parked on grass under a tree and left it to the point where you could see the speakers from the outside!   She kept fooling herself that it was still worth loads of money, in my eyes the only thing that was worth saving was the motor, 7 years of never being run I got it going in 10 minutes and still sounded beastly. she had to let it go for next to nothing, if it was in a better state I would have had it off her.  what a waste.

Unfortunately the most valueable part of the car is the shell....the engines are so mechanically sound yet so udnerpowered everyone takes them out and just hordes them. Then they bang in the 2.8 engines which arn't much mroe powerful tbh!
