ok so iv currently got a mk4 1.4 and love it, but iv not got a years no claims and im looking to upgrade, im thinking of going for a 1.6 as its stil a reasonable price on insurance but do you know if theres any way to get more power from the engine, will much be gained from a remap on (what is stil a fairly small engine) or are there any other ways,

Personally mate the jump from the 1.4 to the 1.6 isn't worth bothering with. You should wait another year or two and jump on a 1.8T of 130/150 diesel instead.
A re-map on a 1.6 won't even get you 10bhp.

go for the 1.8t mate im 17 and have a 1.8 t. try e-car insurance. i have had a non fault accident aswell and they were so helpful!! would reccomend to anyone!

yeh there seems to be a massive 1000 difference between a 1.6 and a 1.8t on insurance... even the 1.8 gti is the same...

Have you looked at insurance on the diesels, 115, 130 and 150?

if i go to the 1.6 it goes upto 1200 a year which as im a student and am only woking part time i can afford, the 1.8 is double that...
the deisel 110 is insurance group 10 which is around the same price as the 1.8... oh how i hate being this young !

The 110 diesel is sh!te anyway mate, you only want the 130/150 really. I'd stick with the 1.4 mate, the 1.6 just doesn't seem like a worthwhile upgrade.
1.8T is group 14, you think it'd cost a fair bit more than a 110.

yes the insurance is in my name and i am the only driver buddy, i had a 1.4 corsa sport but 3 months after i passed my test some muppet ran up my arse, got £1200 for my corsa which was a right result as i only paid £800 in the 1st place haha and unfortunatly my granddad died 3 days after the crash, got some money from him and decided to splash out abit. it was £1500 for the corsa and i had 8months insurance left till renewal so changed the car over and paid an evtra £550 so a total of £2050. not to bad in my opinion when my mate is paying £2350 for a 1.6 zetec-s haha

a lad of 17 with a 1liter corsa on their own insurance pays around £1200-£1400 depending on circumstances. its crap! however if your a girl around £500-£800

I pay £680 with Adrian Flux with filter, d/v, 18's and a remap (not yet done but insured anyway) declared on my 5door 1.8T with 6 points and 5 years no claims and Im 23. Personally I thought that was lots and lots but when I was 18 I had a 205 1.6 gti and that was £2500. Madness. Have you tried insuring your chassis with a 1.8T conversion and going that route? I was gonna do that with my e36 325i. It was cheaper to insure that with an M3 engine than to insure a genuine M3. Worth a thought.......... although its a lot of work and cash.

Mines £700 a year fully comp. I'm 27, 9 years no claims (protected). Lot of money, but I live in Manchester, F* area, most expensive in the country.

Try adding your parents as named drivers to the policy when looking at quotes...knocked £500 off putting my mum on there and another £60 with my dad.

next year providing i stay with the same insurance mine is only £1000 (at the moment ovously may change over the next 5 months) that will be with 1 year no claims, filter, remap, exhaust ad prated breaks. i didnt think this was too bad for when im 18. at the moment i have no mods and its around 2k. i live in weymouth, dorset. in the lowest risk band.

probably most likely on a parents policy, on my own policy with my dad a mk4 1.4 e is £2,400, but i'm 18 not 17, insurance would be about £4k on a 1.8t, it's £3,800 on a mk2 gti 8v

Not to question it, but even though it's a lot of money, that still seems really cheap for a recently passed test driver and a high ins group car :huh:

i want to know how the feck i get higher quotes when i look at small cars and not big engined cars that are modified, cheapest i've had is like £1900 on austin metro with my dad on it, and i'm 18

Or get the 1.6 16v - much more insurance friendly, and pretty much the same power (i've owed both and couldn't really tell them apart).
Had to chuckle at only paying £1473 pounds for insurance. That sucks dude.

i'm 18 on a 1.4 mk4 at £2200, what the feck, my insurance is more then someone with a gti, and i've got a clean license, the system is fecked!

up to 10kmiles which is more than enought for me! it is 3rd party fire and theft and yes they no it is the 1.8t and specificaly asked me if it was the 150bhp or the 180bhp (its the 150bhp model) and yeah im well chuffed, pisses on me mates saxos and fiestas haha
