Title: steering/ brakes vibration
Post by: richy on 08 November 2004, 14:14
My steering feels a bit light when going at speed i.e. 90mph+ (not that I ever do this on public roads), which it didn't used to.

Also when I break gently from anything over 50mph, I get a bit of virbration through the steering wheel.   Could this be warped brake-discs?

Both of these problems seems to be getting a bit worse recently.  Are they likely to be connected, and what you do reckon the problem could be?

Cheers,
Rich

Unlikely to be warped discs - u would get that every time ya touched the brakes.
Looking at the age of your car, its probably not track rod ends either.
Too much guesswork.

Aside from wheel balance, I've been told before that warped discs is a possibility. I've had this on my BMW before - and do at the moment. Replacing the discs had sorted it but keeps coming back. Car was in for a service today and reported this again. Garage tell me could be the hubs or could even be a suspension problem!

Wheels were supposed to be balanced when I got the tyres changed, but will get this checked out at first, before going any further with expensive discs/suspension work!

Any other ideas peeps?  ???

Cheers,
Rich.

Got wheel alignment checked not so long ago, and everything was OK.

Maybe a weight has fallen off since my tyres were changed tho' causing wheel balance to go awry. :P

Yup, the balancing should always be done when having new tyres fitted - I'd be surprised if it wasn't done.

Like you said, you could have knocked a weight off, hit a larg pot hole or something?!!

every pot hole feels big with these low profile tyres and hard suspension!  My alloys are still immaculate tho', so can't have been too bad.  ;D

Took my car to the stealership a few days ago and they discovered unacceptable play in the steering rack, which they can replace under warranty which runs out next month  :D.

They also recommended I get new brake discs (not under warranty), but it'll need a service soon, so I'll leave em till then.

Yeah. There was a bit of a dead spot when the wheel was centred. Sorry....Forgot to mention.
 ;)

They fixed the steering, but unfortunately the buggers crashed my car when they took it for a road test!  >:(  Can you believe it?!?!?  They crashed it into the back of a van!!!!

They've replaced the headlight on the near-side, but there's loads of scratches on the bumper, bonnet and wing.   :'(  They said that they will sort the paintwork, but only after I complained!

You had to complain first!! I find it unbelievable that they thought they could have got away with it!! I would complain to VW UK HQ

The scratches are only light (i.e. not down to the metal), but the paintwork used to be immaculate.

its unbelievable the muppets they let take the cars out. when i took mine back to them after they knackered the turbo the goon that took it out said it wasnt lacking any power ! after a few swear words and commenting on how it probably didnt feel slow compared to his moms nissan micra even without a turbo, i stormed off.

write a letter to VWHQ complaining about the inconvenience and ask for some sort of compensation on top of the repairs.

Good idea mate.   I think I'll do that once (if?) I get it sorted out to my satisfaction.
