Don't want to worry you people out there still waiting for your GTI but I've just read in the Money section of the Sunday Times about the new car showroom tax which is due to come in after April 1st. This makes the first year of road tax more expensive depending on the CO2 output of the car.
I've no idea how this affects the GTi or how much it's going to cost or whether you or the dealer will have to swallow the cost.
Just thought I'd mention it - sorry for the doom and gloom.
-
Any bloody excuse for a new tax.
Go on Gordon, bleed us dry you stupid un-elected c*nt.
That's alright though, as long as you all get your second homes, paid for housekeeping etc etc.
All the while our boys in Afghanistan are stretched the limit with insuffecient equipment and supplies.
Did you know, as a new recruit in the Army, you are given just 20 live rounds to fire during basic training. After that, you're dropped into a warzone expected to be a formiddable killing machine.

showroom tax FFS

Here is what a GTI will cost you as we are band E right ?
All cars classed in the current bands E and F - which produce between 166g and 226g of CO2/km will also have to pay a higher rate in the first year.
This will range from £250 to £550 in the first year and from £180 to £310 thereafter, depending on the extent of CO2 emissions.
-
They have to get their scrappage scheme money back somehow. You all didnt think this was a free service did you ?

They got it back with the other taxes they got from it. VAT in new cars, first registration fee etc. Its why this goverment only gave £1000 as they worked out they would actually not loose out

So if i understand this correctly anyone whos car is reg'ed in April will tax £310 next year for there roadtax instead of £180 that anyone whos car is registered this march or earlier will pay yes? and so on and so on?

From the RAC web site:
People buying new cars from April 1 will be landed with another tax, it has emerged.
The new initiative, known as Showroom Tax, is the second stage in the green-led push to tax vehicles on their C02 emissions.
Research carried out by Autotrader revealed that under the rules drivers of certain vehicles will be hit with an additional tax burden of more than £300 in the first year.
It said that people buying a Honda CR-V with 190g/km C02 emissions after April 1 will be slammed with a first-year VED cost of £550. This is compared with a current cost of £210.
Matt Thompson, group marketing director at Auto Trader, said: "Following its introduction in the 2008 budget, the Showroom Tax has been brought in over a two-year time span. The time delay means many potential buyers are unaware of the impending rise in cost."
However, canny buyers can dodge the tax increase by buying before April 1 or spending time choosing a car which falls into a lower tax band.
Mr Thompson added: "Drivers and eco-friendly motorists who don't want to be stung by the new Showroom Tax, should choose a vehicle from tax-band A."

Choose to buy your car before the 1st April. That's a laugh isn't it since some have been waiting months!!!!

I might also point out that in this Times report petrol duty will go up by 1p plus the rate of inflation for the next three years. So they're expecting 3p next month.
Meanwhile with all the tax from the motorist going everywhere except back into transport I'll carry on dodging the potholes (sorry, craters) that haven't been fixed over the winter.
On a totally unrelated issue if I ever see Ed Balls' smug, slimy, arrogant f****** face on my tele again I'm likely to throw something very heavy at it!!! What a **** he is!!!!
-
...it's just another one on the endless list of additional expenses ordinary working people have had to endure. You name it Labour Taxed it, or introduced a new levy (eg tuition fees) and then blew the money over the past 10yrs on many things but worst of all-creating public sector jobs to the detriment of the private sector. And now those "imaginary" and pointless jobs will have to go.
Ballot box coming soon, choose with care

Ed Balls should 'go forth and multiply' but fortunately or unfortunately he does not have the balls for this. He constantly reminds me of someone who might possibly have a long standing non-specific infection.

Your not wrong there mate , you don't get nothing for nothing in this world. Its very maddening as the evidence against CO2 causing global warming gets stronger by the day its just another excuse to get taxed. I reckon the GTI will work out at 180 road tax a year with 300 odd the first year. Grrrrr
-
They always said if they could work out a way of taxing air! Guess what....
-
And that's just it, global warming is really about water vapour not CO2, but there is no means of creating a tax around water vapour. It's all a great big lie(the CO2 bit), that conviently is an excuse for tax and control.
Don't forget global warming (that is: climate change that has existed since time began) will bring a lot of good things for areas currently deprived of warmth and moisture.
-
another saving for GTD owners, lucky basterds....139 co2 vs 189.
I'm afraid this is the start of many more 'enviroMENTAL' taxes...

Good thing about the GTD is its the same cost as a years road tax, which you would have to pay anyway. Sorry GTI owners.

No coincidence new car prices have shot up is it
Give with one hand and take even more with the other ...

OK... this is going to affect me, as my car is due on the second week of April.
The Golf R emits 199g/kg - so what happens?
Am I correct in saying £425 for the first years tax, and then £225 thereafter?
I'll be making sure VW pick up this extra £200 since they've had me hanging on since May 2009!!!
-
Whats really annoying is yet again, its us in relativly rich Europe that keep getting stung on these stupid environmental taxes when the rest of the new upcoming world (China and India) can build a coal fired power station a month, to 1950's emission regulations. Its all well and good having a wonderful greatly reduced carbon footprint living in the UK, but whats the point when the rest of the world is years behind us and polluting more than our wee land mass will ever have?
Got to say this is great timing for more taxes on motorists, as the forthcoming election looms.

Ha ha... I watched a Slumdog program the other day where they had an Indian chap sitting in a small room with an oven, throwing in plastic, melting it, and pouring it into moulds. He sat there in the room with the smoke bellowing out... Mmmmm... burning plastic
I bet the people who do this for a living have a LOOOONG life expectancy!

Sorry but i can't see what your gripe is - VW are not to blame about the road tax in the UK. The cr4p labour government announced the 'showrrom tax' nearly 2 years ago, so its hardl;y anything new, they just 'did us a favour' and delayed it, hence you've forgotten about it. The fact you decided to order a car that wasn't even officially launched withiout any expected delivery date , which looks like it will arrive mid April, is hardly VWs fault is it ??
I sympathise with all those who waited so long for their cars - VW and their dealers should have been a lot clearer with the order times, and if build weeks have been affected by having to fit in scrapage builds then they should have been informing those delayed as a result. But they didn't. There has been enough internet traffic on VW order times for it not to be a surprise.
VW has in the main honoured their list prices at time of ordering to protect buyers form some of the price rises. They even protected some from the VAT rise as a result of longer than anticipated lead times. They have to draw the line somewhere.
Be thankful you'll get your car before VAT hits 20% !!

When I actually placed my official order in October, I was told that I may see the car in 2009. It then changed to definately being here in time for VW's VAT contribution, and now its mid April.
When I put the deposit down, the VW memos said the car would be available in September!!!
My dealer is already paying my VAT increase and has agreed the price I will be paying when I collect it - so I'm pretty sure they'll honour it.

Thanks - almost what I thought. I don't grudge the £235 per year, but I would grudge paying an extra £200 on the retail price. Part of my spec sheet says it includes 1 years road licence fund.
-
Not all bad, my road tax has gone down to £90 a year

I don't think the new tax would stop any of us getting a GTI or Gtd. But it should not stop us from having a gripe. We are about the highest payers for fuel in the whole of Europe most of which is tax. Our roads are a disgrace and our public transport system is not much better.
The UK has unbelievable debt, we hear eighteen grand for every person in the UK over 16 years of age. That is going to equal more tax again and cut backs on things like road maintenance. Us the public have just to accept everything that is thrown our way. Make no mistake it does not matter what government is in power we are going to get hammered over the next ten years. Unless a national hero can stand up with the people behind him which we know wont happen.

Fair enough and good luck - the VW price list includes ont he road costs incl road tax, but is only correct at time of printing, so you may hit a brick wall. Always worth trying tho

Called the dealer today as I'm waiting for a courtesy car... and whilst on the phone I asked about the showroom tax.
He said - 'don't worry, we'll take care of that'.

I called my dealer today to find out delivery of the car and the tax issue.
He said 100% guarantee it will be Mid \ late Feb for a 1st March Delivery.....
then 100% sure it will be March but worst case 1st week in April......
last week def will be before end of March....
today worst case 2nd week in April. wtf!!!
So I asked what about the tax rise, as car was supposed to be mid Feb for 1st March delivery I take it I don't have to pay.
He advised -correct and that I wouldn't be affected anyway.

I'd guess cars ordered before the new showroom tax comes into effect won't be affected and it will only be those ordered after that date.
-

Customers will be picking up the tab unless your dealer is silly enough to. Doesn't matter when you ordered it unfortunatley

My dealer better get on with mine then or they will be told to park the car were the sun don't shine if they try and charge me for this because they were too lazy to register it in time.

So what was my dealer talking about regarding me not needing to pay anything more on the GTI? I guess he's hopeful that the car turns up before April lol.
-
He will be hoping he can get it registered and taxed before the end of the month otherwise he will have to discount the car............ to pay for the extra tax
-
Ah I see.
Guess as it's a new tax based on date of the cars registration then it's not really down to the dealer then as it's a tax change.
Found the following on parkers. Not too bad got the GTI mk6 as low co2.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/News/Motoring-Costs/Showroom-tax-explained/
The table on the above link indicates that the golf (which is tax band H as co2 emissions of 170g/km or 173g/km for the DSG)
So looks to be a one off showroom tax of £250 from cars 1st April onward. Also annual tax then after starting following year is £180 for 12 months (which is less than the Mk5 gti).

wrong, if you are going to make statements like that can you get your facts right please.
it makes the army sound unprofessional, we get extensive training before we deploy on operations and certainly use more than 20 rounds during basic training as you need more than that to pass the shooting tests. and the rest is done with blank ammunition so that skills can be honed in.
best leaving things like that to the people in the know
