Title: EGR Clean or Delete?
Post by: golfmk4owner on 12 March 2010, 21:47
Hi guys, still due to post pics but im curently bedroom-bound with shingles

Had the R-tech remap done the other day - many thanks to the guys at R-tech and friendly and genuine - can't reccomend them enough! And what a performance boost!
They pointed out that my EGR valve is "leaking"... theres oily deposits around it. This would be backd up by the fact that it kind of screeches as i welly the car. So when ive recovered im going to pull my intercooler out and clean the expected oil.

My dillemma - Clean the EGR and try to find the source of the leak or get the allard pipe?
Now before people say "all it does is reduce emmisions", i like the idea of less emmisions lol. But my question is will an EGR delete be BENEFICIAL in comparison to a cleaned / replaced EGR. Id rather spend more money on whats BETTER for the car.

So any detailed advice would be great, thanks guys.
Thanks again to R-tech ;)

Hmmm I wanna know the answer to this aswell, patiently waiting :)
I'm sure the allard delete does more than just reduce emmissions though.

Since you have had a remap depending on what map R-Tech gave you the EGR will be turned off. All it may be doing now is blocking the air flow.

I would either take if off to clean or replace it with the allard.

Oh so remaps can actually tell the ECU not to use the EG can they?

I dont know what map i had but i presume it was the spec 1 - 175bhp. Any ideas if this disables the EGR?
If the EGR was disabled then, would cleaning it do anything at all or would it simply not be used and thus be in the way?
Thanks for any advice

When you turn you car off does it splutter to a stop?

I take it you know what an EGR does. It will be clogged up with the exhaust gunk and soot thus restricting. If it's been disabled it is in the way.

Well when i turn it off... it just cuts out. Wouldnt say it sputters...
Yeh i know what an EGR does, but if its leeaking then its not doing its job really i dont suppose
Just dont really wanna get rid of something thats there for a purpose unless i can better it.

Allard EGR delete FTW

Didn;t you ask what map you had done and what they did for you?

Maybe give them a call and ask if they turned the EGR off, then take it from there.

No need.  If it's an R-Tech map it's been disabled and unless you got a TBE you would have had a Spec 1 map

I would have thought that 99% of tuners disable the EGR in their maps

What's a TBE?

So EGR turned off so it no longer works so it's in effect dormant now, so why the EGR delete?

Sorry if i'm being stupid I just don't get the EGR delete if the map has already sort of deleted it. You get where i'm coming from?

E = Exhaust - i think you can fill in the rest

Your EGR will be full of crud therefore the actual diameter of it will be reduced.  Also the EGR delete has a greater internal diameter so therefore more air flows through the system.  More air = more power

where can you get the allard egr from?

Ok so if i get the Allard does the car take much longer to warm up? (because of the lack of warm air being re-fed). Mine seems to take too long for my liking as it is lol.

Not noticed any adverse effect.  I'd change your thermostat if you're concerned

sorry for thread hijack but will the allard ones fit 110 ahf engines ok do you know? am thinking this may be causing my engine judder whilst coming to a stop/going along slowly (is the egr part of fuel delivery system?)

they do make one's for the 110bhp but make sure you ring and ask them as its a slightly different size to the 130 / 150's

It's not really - its part of the turbo pipework so no fuel flows through it

I thought the allard was about £50 I just found some on the bay for like £89.99, is that right?

What is the common going rate for an allard.

Well thanks guys some nice advice. Out of curiosity, is 15 minutes driving normal before the engine reaches running temp?

Buy the one i posted a link to - £65 or less I think

Not really - even in the depths of winter mine was up to temperature within 10 minutes.  Is that around town or on to motorways?

Yeah sounds fine to me. Mine is sort of the same.

Oh I read another thread somewhere where people said it was ok for it to take that long to warm up.
Mine takes this long only on inner city.

My brothers Leon on a 57 plate diesel 110 takes like 20 minutes in the morning and almost 5 miles to reach just under running temp

Around town is about right but if you're hopping on to main roads etc then IMO it shouldn't be taking that long

I'd get your brothers Leon looked at to be honest - I wouldn't be happy with that!!  Or is that start / stop town driving?

Yeah start stop and maybe about a mile max on dual carriageway.

It warms up but still under running temp in the middle of the guage.

He asked a few people at work before asking me and they all said it was a diesel thing and that they had similar time and distance to running temp.

If on a long journey does it ever reach the middle of the gauge?? If not then the thermostat should be changed

Thats around town for me, if i manage to get onto a motorway then i think it would be quicker, its just i dont like driving too fast with a cold engine, but unless i drive quick it takes forever to warm up lol.
Am i being silly and too cautious?

don't be afraid to rev the engine but use less than 50% throttle   I normally don't exceed more than 3000rpm until warm but don't floor it

Rhyso it does reach normal running temp but just takes ages like 20 mins or 5 miles of start stop so like you say it's probably okish

Yeh same here i just change gears early for a while
Annoying in the winter though, if i make a short trip i dont even get to feel the heaters
