Title: £8000 budget for Mk2 did not work - so plan B but need help
Post by: Bieldside on 02 March 2010, 18:38
Had no response to my £8000 offer for a mint 3 door Mk2 GTI 16v - apart from questions over my sanity

So trying to find a base for a restortion but HAS TO BE OAK GREEN. NO OTHER COLOUR PLEASE

Anybody know of any good companies that could take a base 16v and take it back to its former glory?

If so please let me know

Think he wanted oak green and low miles (although for a 20 year old car 90k is still relatively low).

If you have an £8000 budget, & intend to do a restoration, the colour is surely irrelevant?  Decent paintjob = £2k.  This leaves £6k for a car + bits surely....?

My post was crap and as I couldn't delete it, I wrote something more irrelevant instead.

Pleate delete Admin.

theres plenty of companies out there, both large and small. Your budget is sufficient to do pretty much what you want.

As I remember you wanting a car full of history.
I would say get a J plate 16v oak green that is solid but not too mint.

Acid dip the shell and rebuild it. I think you could could do that all under £8k if you do most of the work yourself. Leave the paint to a pro though.

I dare you

Does it not have a colour code on the VIN plate?

Is this thread about building a really good Oak green Valver, or about building something that should be considered to be concours?
they are 2 entirely different things and can be thousands of £££s apart....

Its about having a genuine Mk2 16v in Oak Green to keep - as yet I am undecided about having a faithful restoration or having a wolf in sheeps clothing version

Depends on the money over and above cost of donor car

But externally it would be a standard car as it was leaving the factory - but internally ??? plus engine ???

I'm guessing the idea of all this is to have a car that you can keep for a VERY long time, something that would be worth a lot many years down the line?

If so you want everything to be standard, interior, engine and exterior I'd have thought.....I think I'm confused at what you're aiming to achieve here lol....I think its the £8K thats doing it....that thought of having that much money to put into a mk2 effecting my ability to think straight lol :)

sounds to me like you need to go out and spend 1500  on a reasonable oak green valver then.

spend 4500 grand overhauling it

spend 2000 having it painted

I may have sourced a donor car - 3 door 16v in Oak Green with 178000 miles

No service history at all + no MOTS - but does that matter I ask myself if the objective is to "gut" it and start again

My objective is to have a standard 16v externally as it left the factory with leather interior but pondering whether to have a modified engine dropped in so it becomes a wolf in sheeps clothing , Feel the latter is more fun and as the car is only for me it may justify spending £000's

Any recommenadtions on engine choices?

Well then your completely differing from what you said originally. Your either going for an original looking Mk2 or a modified Mk2...

For 8k you can pickup a 1.8t Mk2 with very very tidy body for a lot less than that and have plenty left over...

You need to decide what you want write it down and go for it :)

If i were you i'd keep it *totally* standard. A 16v engine, in top notch condition is still damn fast in a mk2. There would be no 'buts' about it being totally oem. Just my 2 pence though!

If you are going to spend that sort of money on a car that you want to keep for ever, then I would re-build the standard engine to as new spec. Ultimate performance would really not matter to me as I would not want to drive it very fast anyway.

Mine is about as original as they come and I intend to keep it that way. It is the car that I wanted 20 years ago. Now I've got one if I moddified it, it wouldn't be that car any more.
