Post by: golfwannabe on 28 February 2010, 16:04

It bloody flies when you give you some to be honest but I do get plumes of sh!t coming out of the back end.

The noise is coming from the engine and with the drivers window open it's very noticeable - Put it in 5th tonight at about 30-40mph and could still hear it. It sounds like it's turbo related or induction related????

smoke is normal - its the quantity you need to be worried about lol

what's it like with the window closed?? I had a boost leak and it sounded like the air was rushing in through the vents

Stick you head under the bonnet and check for any obvious signs of loose pipes

Also look down by the drivers side wheel arch as some of the pipework runs along there

Whats a dodgy amount of smoke to look out for?? I'm talking a fair old amount as in if i look through the rear view mirror it's really bloody noticeable

The hissing / air / whooshing noise is really bloody loud with the drivers window open but can't say I can hear it with it shut. My bro had a drive tonight without me mentioning it and he turned to me and said 'what the f**k is that noise?'

I was going to ask whether you are getting a lot of smoke at the same time as whooshing noise.
Almost certainly an air leak as Rhyso says.
Check all your hose connections, especially around the air cooler/heat exchanger. It will be somewhere between the turbo outlet and the inlet manifold.

Cheers for the reply.

Where do I need to look for these leaks? I've only had the car a few days and I don't where things are located in the bay (turbo, intercooler etc)

Cheers for the help.

On your car where my big blue pipe is, you'll find an equivalent black plastic pipe

Your intercooler is located behind the lower front grill on the drivers side

From the back of that runs your pancake pipe inside the drivers wheel arch into a red turbo pipe into the turbo

Check all the connections - you might find that the lugs are worn and the only option is to replace the pipe.  Or you might be lucky and just the o-rings are perished - each one is about £2 each from the dealers

No worries   Hopefully that should help pinpoint the problem

My money would be on either a loose pipe or a split in the red turbo hose (which is what I've had)  Lets hope its not the red hose as they are a cool £100 from the dealers

Really?? Bloody hell - a lot of wonga for a hose!!

I think it may be the red hose which runs down through the drivers side wheel arch for 2 reasons;

A) I'm bloody unlucky with cars and it'll always be the most expensive option.

B) The whooshing / hissing / air noise that I hear with drivers window open is coming from around that area and apparently the black smoke is a characteristic of that probelm? Is that correct?

A) I feel your pain on that one lol
B) either the intercooler or that red pipe - lets hope its just a loose connection :afro:  Thick black smoke is a sure sign of a boost leak

Ok, So I've had my car checked today and the Intercooler is f**ked! We did a smoke test and it's billowing out. sh!t loads of oil too. Looks like previous owner has put it up a grass verge and damaged it.

VW want £250 for a new one. Anyone recommend a VW refurbs?? Can I upgrade this for something better seeing as it needs replacing? If so What can I upgrade too?

I also need a new Power Steering pump - What approx price do these go for?

Cheers

You could upgrade to an Allard FMIC but apaprently they're a lot of hassle to fit.

Otherwise eBay, scrappies but make sure you test it before it goes on.

ooo not good

Look on Ebay for a 2nd hand one - I picked up one for £30

Other options are Allard or Forge but both are the far side of £500 each..........

Cheers, Will have a look.

For £30 is everything ok with it?

Ideally want some kind of warranty in case its faulty...

Pressure tested it before it went on the car   There is some oil around it but I'm hoping to clean that up when i get round to fitting my catch tank

Make sure its from a 130 though - all the rest are different fitments.  Don't forget to search under Bora too - that's how I found mine
