Title: 280mm Discs
Post by: sprout99 on 15 February 2010, 07:49
The front brakes on my valver are about fcuked.....
I'm planning to upgraged to 280's to give it a bit more stopping power.

Where is the best place to buy them????

I've done some basic searching ...£20 each a disc and pads £20 ish????

Thank
Ian

think you will need some Caliper spacers also and if you do you can use stock pads

280s only a bolt on fit if your car is late 88 onwards with 256mm brake, before that they had 239 brakes. With the 256 the calliper carriers unbolt from the hub, 239 carriers are cast into the hub.  If you do have 239 you need 256+ 4 stud hubs, Passats are a good source as are higher spec SEAT models from the 90s.

As for the 280mm carriers, MK3 GTIs are popping up in scrappies all the time now and are a good source, just make sure its a pre-96 model.  Later SEAT models also got them, as did various high end VWs.  Ideally take the 280mm callipers as well, you can get away with 256 callipers but you need to use part worn 16v pads and/or grind down the slider pins a bit.

It has later hubs so i only need carriers

There are 2 types of pads - a 15mm and a 19mm

Post by: rubjonny on 15 February 2010, 12:04
yeah 256 calliper is narrower than the 280, since 280 use a thicker disc. as above can get away with it just about if use part worn pads and/or grind slider pins down. if it was me id fit the proper callipers and take the opportunity to replace all flexi lines, bias valve, fit MK3 rear calipers and bleed the brake system

Yes I agree but if using std mk2 (256mm) 16V pads which are only 16mm thick instead of 19mm which are used by G60 surely it will fit?

Post by: rubjonny on 16 February 2010, 16:19
280 discs are still 2mm thicker than 256mm, so that may not be enough!  think it also comes down to the make of pads, some may be thicker than others

Ta, yeah, considered the wide track option but has been left alone due to insurance issues...

Diamond Braded hoses and black diamond discs.

thanks for all the advice !

I spoke to guy at VW spares yesterday. He mentioned that there might be a clearnace issue
with BBS RA's and the bigger G60 callipers??

I'll get the mk3 callipers and carriers off me mate and have a look at what i can do.
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: sprout99 on 17 February 2010, 09:28
will the 280 conversion work with std BBS RA's?
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: rubjonny on 17 February 2010, 09:54
The 15" RA comes in 2 different offsets, 1 size fits, other needs a thin spacer.
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: LazyLunatic on 17 February 2010, 10:05
14" ra's will not fit over the brakes but 15's will be fine :)
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: rubjonny on 17 February 2010, 10:44
as above, 2 offsets of 15" RAs, 1 set clears other needs a thin spacer ;)

Post by: sprout99 on 17 February 2010, 10:46
i had a look last night - there's a good 20mm between calliper and wheel
car has original wheels .....ET28 possibly?

i'm going to pick up carriers tonight. Might bring them to work and turn the guide pins down
on lathe. bit more accurate than grinding
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: rubjonny on 17 February 2010, 11:19
iirc the 2 sizes are ET35 and 38? or 33 and 35... Will do some searching

edit: though this is only an issue with proper G60 callipers, the 256mm calipers that you'll be using will clear just fine :)

but will need some monor tweaks ......to carrier guide pins.
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: rubjonny on 17 February 2010, 13:01
yeah in order to get the calipers to fit over the discs, what i meant was either size of BBS RA will clear the 256mm calipers without any issues.

After some research, the 2 sizes are:
191 601 025 AE - 6.5x15 ET33
165 601 025 - 6x15 ET35

not sure which ones clear the G60s, but I'd hazard a guess it would be the 6.5J ones as they're a lower offset.

i'll look tonight - the offser is stamped on outside of wheels

mine are 6j x 15 ET35

There is loads of room around calliper but any bigger on bigger discs might not fit.
Got carriers.....need to paint them and find slide bolts
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: sprout99 on 19 February 2010, 10:51
bits have arrived

280mm discs
std 16v pads (16mm thick)
280 carriers currently in garage at home painted black

fingers crossed i hit no snags......

angle grinder at the ready for slide bolts modding !

Keep us posted with your progress.

I too have 6j x 15 ET35 RAs and would be interested to hear if you have any clearance issues.

i'll be very p155ed off if they don't fit !

i have the ibiza sport 280mm set up with 15" MIM 1000s and there are no issues  :afro:
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: sprout99 on 19 February 2010, 22:35
it's fitted......

grinding down the slide pins was a pain but the std callipers and 280 carriers are in place.

there is very little clearance but no rubbing. Brakes feel very positive so far and should get better

Title: Re: 280mm Discs

tried brakes and they feel very good.

anyone know if the ibiza 16v setup needs 16mm or 19mm thick pads? i've come across both listed!
Title: Re: 280mm Discs
Post by: sprout99 on 25 February 2010, 07:53
i would guess 19mm.....i have used the std Golf 16V versions on mine which are 16mm
as i'm using the original callipers with modded slide bolts

depends which ibiza 16v you're on about! they had both 256 and 280mm brakes, depending on if its 1.8 or 2.0 16v.

Title: Re: 280mm Discs

FM those carrier bolks were an absolute swine to get out.
Ended up having to heat them out.
Who's bright idea was it to put hex bolts on rear carriers!?

Great info from the man once again. Badly need to update my brakes.

Also worth taking the 15'' space saver spare wheel to fit over the brakes. I got mine out of a corrado g60. Not sure if seat's have space savers though. :)

well really if you get a front flat you shjould put space saver on the back and put good rear wheel on the front, dont want a space saver on the front if you can help it!
