p3eps says ""Cars with leather generally sell for approximately £1000 more than without according to the VW Used website... "
They might do, but they cost £1800 more in the first place. Also, I don't think for most people the only consideration when speccing is the resale value. I could have afforded leather, but went for the standard cloth because I think they look better and add a "lift" to the interior. My previous 3 cars have all had leather and I'm a bit fed up with it.

When my ED30 was written off (yawn...) I had to spend some time trying to find similar specced cars to compare for insurance purposes. When I was looking at GTI's, the VW Used site seemed to give approximately £1000 for a car with leather over one with cloth.
Like I said in the thread you're quoting - I haggled mine for £1300.
If it wasn't for the Golf R having white bolsters on the seats I wouldn't bother as I think leather in general (whether its full leather and great quality, of part leather etc) is a waste of money. It does look nice, but its a pain in the butt as its either roasting hot or freezing cold!
For me the half and half seats in the ED30 were the ideal solution. The leather bolsters give great support, but the cloth centers mean the heated seats work great and that you're never roasting or freezing!

Half and half would be perfect.
Those light coloured cloth bolsters are horrid.
You had no choice but to get leather and you got a good deal.

To expand this slightly tired topic, how about a third option? Alacantra!
I had this on my old Type R and loved it. Hard wearing like cloth, but soft and a bit more special (think motorsport) like leather.

Had this in the MkiV R32, great combination! After 6 years still looked pretty good.

Yea alcantara is a very valid option in my opinion my brother has it on the s3 . I think a car like a GTI should have a little bit more choice in the type of seats to choose .

Absolutely.
Hard wearing but soft.
Cloth inserts + Alcantara for the bolsters just as in a Type R.
-
Alcantara would have been perfect for me too. I was looking at at GT TDi before settling on the GTD, and thought the black alcantara would save me the money of upgrading to leather. Course you cant get it in the GTD.
Leathers kinda horses for courses I guess, I really like it, have it in my Passat thats getting traded and wanted it again as I`m planning to keep the Golf for a long time.
-
Plus points for leather option...
heated seats inclusive
wipe clean
more upmarket look ?
Minus points for leather
cold in winter
not exactly breathable in summer - very hot days and lots of miles = sweaty back
needs treatment
looks bad when scuffed / cracked, especially drivers seat bolster IMO
Horses for courses - i've probably had more issues, and spent longer looking after, leather seats than cloth. I personally think the tartan is part of the GTI heritage.

Absolutely.

Thats what you get in the R - just a shame the alcantara bits are almost white.

personally i find the tartan pattern on the cloth pure retro, and chavvy at the same time and I love it. if it was the same price for cloth and leather i would still choose cloth.

The tartain is classic GTI and looks great, but the leather for me is proper lush and ties in an already fantastic interior/dash with the leather finishing it off beautifully.
-
If i was buying secondhand and it seems to be what you started the thread out with.
GTI i would look for cloth.
GTD i would look for cloth (I like it better than the GTIs as its like the series 2 Mk1s in colours)
R i would look for leather.
Alcantara i hate the stuff. It loves oil and greese and is not that long lasting you just have to look at some 10 year old cars with it.
Anyone else go look at the cloth/leather samples on there dealers wall and notice how much thicker the mk6 weave is compared to the mk5.
-
Leather for me all the way, adds that bit more class to the interior.
-

Disagree. I had a 7yr old type r and the alacantra looked like new.
Perhaps Honda is better than VW at this?
anyway, look at most motorsports seats, alacantra all the way!!

Won't be so beautiful in a couple of years time with faded patches and saggy folds. I looked at many second hand mk5s and was very disappointed with the leather.
-
I had Alcantara on my Peugeot, and it was great. Never needed anything more than a wipe over. Still looked great when I registered it for the scrappage scheme (though the driver's seat split on the side of the seat back before I actually swapped it for the Golf). This was in marked contrast to the cloth I had on my previous Fiestas which got dirty too easily.
I really, really wanted the leather in the Golf. I'd absolutely budgeted for it even though I thought it was expensive. Until the day I saw it in the showroom car. I can't explain it, but it didn't have that "expensive" quality I was looking for at that price. Then I went to a different dealer, looking for a bigger discount, and ran into a cloth fan. His showroom car was done up in cloth, and he extolled the classic homage to the MkI. I realised I liked it better than the leather.
So I specced the DSG instead.
Sorry, Kev!
Rolfe.

Thats your choice. My choice was the leather. My arse is not 30 stone so I very much doubt it will be saggy and as for the faded patches ? I will be taking care of the leather and it will be treated. If my leather is faded in a couple of years I'll take pics and give you my GTI free, when I show you its not, you give me yours. Deal ?

No deal Noel. I doubt many people would look after leather like you will be though. Hence the Mk5s I saw were generally in poor condition. Even the 5 series BM I had before the golf had poor quality leather, hence I went with cloth.

My car is my pride and joy, I still sit in it and smile. With the leather costing so much, I just cant think of not looking after it properly.

Hehe, each to their own. :)
With cloth seating, I have found cars sound quieter due to cloth's less reflective properties when compared to leather.
Anyway, they both look good. But cloth looks good for a longer time! It is also much, much cheaper.

I have leather seats in my current car which is now two and a half years old. I fed them regular with a clean and feed treatment so they still look good. Though the driver’s seat has slight sag on it.
It takes a few moments before the heat comes through the seat until then its bloody freezing sitting on them just now. On hot days your back does tend to sweat.
I would never get leather seats again plus I think the tartan seats look absolutely brilliant in GTI form and blend in well with all the red stitching on the steering wheel and gear lever. Brings back memories of happy motoring in a Mark 2 GTI.

I really do not understand that leather is suddenly the thing NOT to get on the GTI..
Okay reasons pointing to (some) aspects of discomfort that is a bit harder to disagree since we all look different towards our comfort-priorities...but reasons like it is a gay thing to have...uhh..tell that to Schumacher in his Ferrari (Mercedes) or to all sportscarmakers......now really :smug:
And as for the reason that it looks more like the original I would say ...buy the original...(maybe wayback they did have leather options...anyone ).
To be honest one of the points I disliked buying the MK6 car WAS the cloth....I find the cloth on the MK5 very nice but on the MK6 the pattern is different and on the seat it is not flanked on 3 sides with grey anymore so now the whole thing reminds me of a tea-towel....OMG I've made enemies now.... :lipsrsealed:
You've guessed leather for me

Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!
They might sell the GTi with tea towel looking seats in your country to counteract the numerious 'coffee house' table covers!
The centre sections of the cloth seats are flanked by plain cloth.
You are seeing things through a haze after your numerous visits to those evil coffee houses!
Hope you don't drive under the influence.

So you can say 3 times wrong, now proof if you can see 3 times flanked
I do not have the experience, you have, to compare it with "coffee house" table covers so I can not comment on that one but I would reckon that the GTI seats have now easily found their match judging by the type of fans entering these kind of establishments.

Good morning Erik:
I think I hit a nerve!
The coffee houses are world famous. Nothing wrong with that.
All tourists to your country, young and old, have a peep. Nothing wrong with that.
Pictures of these places are available in tourist guides etc. Not a secret.
These coffee houses also serve an excellent cup of coffee. I know.
Your partial deniability of not knowing much about them is interesting. You must have led a very sheltered life.
As for your rather silly comparison of the pattern on seats to the social preferences of 'fans' on this forum, I can only feel sadness for your attitude towards us.
Enjoy your partially leather-clad interior.
It must be fabulous.
Have a nice day.

I agree. IMO it also has the problem of
- Not unique to the GTI its used in the GTD + anything else with the sport seats option and leather  and the , Mk5 GTI + GT
- Makes the interior very dark and like a coal mine.
A plus for the leather is it does smell nice
I find it a shame they did not do a half leather option on the mk6 GTI as i would have gone for that.
my 50s and 60s classics have proper high quality full cow rather than bull leather and to me it shows.
Each to there own but full VW leather on a GTI type model is not for me.

A shame they did not do a half leather option on the mk6 GTI as i would have gone for that.
A coal mine on 4 wheels. How modern!

A sheltered life...I agree...I have to get out of my car more often....
Reading and listening are skillfull arts.......take your time....I am NOT referring to forum dudes at all......but to the visitors who appreciate the interior design of the coffeshop .... there is really not much more behind it...
Anyway you did not hit a nerve at all..( I actually thought the opposite being told that I was wrong in a rather convincing way) ....so just a reaction to leather versus cloth and with a bit humor in order not to let it get too serious

Must visit The Netherlands once I get my tea towel!
Got some good friends there.
Read my post to you under 'Comical Racers'.

Not a fan of full leather but part leather like in the edition 30 is spot on & more in keeping with a sporty car were i think ''full'' leather is more for a limo type car. Just my thought on it.

Part leather would have been perfect.
One can still have it done by a good trimmer.
I am looking into this.
-
Let us know what you find out - thanks. Nearly 2 grand for what a lot of people are saying is sub- standard leather...too much - besides, the jacara cloth is very 'Gti' - but the thought of the cloth with the sides in a good leather...interesting...

I know of a trimmer who has done a few Mercedes Benz cars with full leather for £1200 + VAT.
I wonder how much half leather would cost. The problem for me is the company is quite far from London.
I will do some searches in the next few weeks and PM you with the details. Maybe, for 2 cars, we can negotiate a discount!
-
Thnx - I'm not one for changing original spec into non-VW, for example, spec but I do like the idea of having some quality leather on the sides of the seats - keep the genuine Gti cloth interior with a touch of 'lux' - it would just give it a bit of a special finish - I think it would look better than full leather - just my opinion, no disrespect intended to those of you who have full leather.

Will be in touch.

May I kindly suggest this could be a group buy, not necessarily only MKVI's...?
You may get some interest from other bunkers rooms in the forum, from those without standard leather.
[cough]... MKV section... [cough]

A job lot!!!
Will look into it.
I wonder if James will be a GTi owner?

Think I already mentioned this.
I hated the leather on my mk5 and love the Jacara on my mk 6.
To those of you thinking about going for the part leather aftermarket thing, have you thought about your warranty and resale?
If it was a free VW option I may have considered it.
My old long dead mk1 would turn in its grave if it knew they were offering leather these days. (And dare I say it... Automatics)

You know what? I tend to agree with you.
I'll search for James.
He is so popular today!
-
Yes I checked it out and aftermarket leather done by/via the VW dealer means warrantee stays valid....I find that actually pretty normal :lipsrsealed:
Resale is not affected by it (a bit uncertain with this if you are to choose a pinkish colour leather )..this I based on the fact that I experienced no difference in lease-figures..before/after....

Erik:
Just because I accidently blew you a kiss on another thread, you did not need to mention pink leather! :embarassed:
It is bad enough that I am getting a red car which could easily fade into a nice pink with time!
Now a rather poor sexual innuendo just for you: paint protection is like a condom especially for red paint.
I might even come to The Netherlands and get semi-leathered!

Let's just say you have convinced me ...no never protection for me...and leave it with that.... :smug:
Full leather is supposedly to be a gay thing on this forum what does that make you.. getting semi-leathered....... :lipsrsealed:

This thread is getting WEIRD...

Good evening.
I really meant semi-lathered!
How ridiculous for them to think leather is a gay thing! They should be shot at dawn, all of them!
How dare they!
Anyway, your interior is also not full leather either, so it seems we are both in the same boat, sort of!

The only thing thats gay around here is this thread - and the amount of smileys you use!

Erik:
How much did it cost you, if you don't mind me asking?
-
No problem...in the end it costs actually nearly as much (2300 euro) as Factory (2500 euro) since I needed a Winterpackage (heated seats) so it leaves me with the advantage of full leather and heated washers/headlightwashers and a chance that the upholstery might be done a bit better (or worse)
I loose the electric side adjustment...but you can't win them all...
BTW I chose the same leather "Black Vienna"..wth black stitching...I could choose whatever I liked but I prefer to keep it safe

Many thanks.
I already have the Winter Pack so it will probably cost around Euro 1850 (approx £1650) for full leather. I wonder how much half leather would cost from your trimmer?
-
Sorry i have not read the complete thread but is it you simply want to use superior leather Am1w or just refuse to pay VW prices for there leather?. If its the later, keep an eye on ebay as mk5 GTI leather seats often come up for sale there. That way its only the door cars you will need to get redone.

Both.
I wish VW had a half 'leather' option. But then again some parts would still be covered in artificial leather so that would also be no good for me!
Once I get the car, I will seriously consider whether to go for half leather or not. However, I think I will simply love the cloth so much that I will not bother.
-
I reckon half leather would not differ much ( in price that is) since they still have to pick a cloth or to be less rude "THE ORIGINAL CLOTH".....
But you are right to calculate the 1800 euros...same overhere
One advantage I forgot to mention is that aftermarket stuff (like eg the leather) gives me tax benefits...'cause it lowers the price "off-factory"
(the price taken by the dutch tax law)
So my dealer in his brighter moments advised me with a few bits and pieces... :lipsrsealed:

Or just buy a set of edition 30 seats.

I just want something completely new under me , so Edition 30 seats are out!

Umm save money and stick with the cloth they look great <---- don't need heating here
-
We don't really need heated seats here either its just the soft southeners and the kilt wearers

My present car a Type R GT has no heated seats.
What you don't have you don't miss.
By the way, southerners have toughened up a bit more this winter, hopefully.
I feel for you guys up north, its really cold and wet.
Cold in London today, though.
Must try wearing a kllt in winter!
