Hi guys,
As part of some extra curricular work at University I'm one of a team of students that work on various cars, mainly classic.
The group has a few MK2 GTIs, and therefore we are trying to rebuild a MK2 GTI engine that we had lying around.
Problem we are having is that before we get cracking, we would like to know if the engine is 8V or 16V, so I was hoping somebody on here would tell me if there is an easy way to do this? Short of stripping the engine as it hasn't been run since the last rebuild, that is.
I do have pictures if they are any use at all!
Cheers guys,
Rob.

Just wondering what you are studying and are you taking the P155.
-
Easy enough to work out which is which.
-
16v is cross flow with spark plugs in the top, 8v is counter flow with spark plugs in the front of the head.

I don't know what gives you that idea to be honest? Im studying Motorsport Engineering.
Nick - thanks for the reply, problem is we don't have the head, only the block, unless the internals are all the same?
-
Nope they're different. Easiest way without the head and other than engine numbers is the dizzy. If the dizzy is on the front of the block (or the hole where it should be if it has one) then it's an 8v. No dizzy hole means it's a 16v as their dizzy is on the head and driven directly from the exhaust cam.

So a group of motorsport engineers who re-build classic cars cant figure this one out?

Is everybody so hostile on here? Yes we are (mostly) Motorsport Engineers, but the whole point of doing this is to learn, hence being at University, and most of us have only been there a matter of months.

No not at all, i confused myself there. Thought you said you were second year... hmmm?? god knows... dizzy front =8, dizzy side = 16

That's alright, thanks for the help, hopefully we can have it all running soon

Why dont you try to do somthing special with it? Rather than just an engine re-build? Get inspired by B-class rally vids and make some mad turbo 4wd 1000bhp jobbie?
-
rpm 91 emailed me a pic of the block so I've bopped it onto my flicker account for others to see.

Looks like a 1.8 16v to me but what are others thoughts?

Now that would be interesting! I fear, however, as the engine is intended for the group leader's day to day car he may not take to that, although, it is used for road rallies so we can but try, as long as we tell him what we're doing

Tell him to have some man up pills!

thats a 16v block of some kind, check for 1.8 or 2.0 cast into the block round the back, that'll tell you what it is

Cheers, forgot to mention that yes it does have 1.8 on the other side. Guess that's the question answered then, many thanks to all that helped
