Title: 1.8T 20v Engine Conversion question
Post by: mrvag on 20 January 2010, 17:15

Hi Guys, New to the forum have been reading through it most of this afternoon, am a member of other forums but have found this one ideal as it is very specific to the GTI..

I have currently advertised my 16v GTi in the classified section but would happily not sell it if i can find someone to do a total supply and fit 1.8T 20v conversion that wont cost the earth.
I know there are quite a few members on here with all their experience that could recommend a company to do it.....

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

It will not be cheap

For the eninge and all the bits like turbo, loom, exhaust, fuel pump, airbox, ecu, dash conversion it will cost more than £2K to do with garege fees etc

so

There are plenty on second hand Octavia RS on about 2002 for £2K on the Bay just buy one of them and enjoy using it.  I got one.  It handles good, ok on gas mpg and hard wearing, fast, easy to remap to about 205bhp from 180.

Thanks. Don't get me wrong its not just to have the power (i have owned a turbo cars with the last being a 225 TT), im after something more special i.e. the idea of putting a Turbo engine in the MK2.

plenty of peeps do it - but it's not cheap.  My brother said I should consider it myself - but what's the point when I got the RS sitting in the drive next to the golf and I'm waiting for a Hummer

Thanks....A bit too much for me to do, i was hoping for someone to do it all for me like the two companies mentioned earlier but cant justify shelling out around £4k.

Unless you can do the conversion your going to struggle to get it done any cheaper.

I did mine myself and it still cost 3k but was a far better job than TSR did on my mates for twice the price.

To get the qpeng loom done is a estimate 1k and the engine and rest of the parts I would look for a crash car sou got all the parts u need and sell the left overs and parts u don't need for the conv to recoup some of ur money back ...

They charged him 3k to do it but he had almost all the parts and the engine was in complete with box. Sent it out with a broken diverter valve. Did not wire up the coolant temp, rev counter and oil pressure sensors to the clocks. Spent ages sorting out the loom as it was left to hang loose over the turbo.

it can be done for around that as far as im aware but u need a leccy mate who can splice a loom up for you rather than go qpeng etc route. as i understand its a lot of grief though!
thought about selling yours and simply buying a converted one? there are a few ive seen going under 3K which look tiy!

I have placed mine on the classified section but my preference would be to keep it and have the conversion done.

if 3-4k is too much - dont do it! a lot of parts will need uprating, brakes, etc. and you will want to replace parts with new parts like bushes, ball joints, etc while the car is apart and it all adds up. trust, been there myself!

ps. cant believe tsr would do such a bad job!

:)

just do over a say a year and budget yourself each month. Do a little bit every now and then and make sure you research! Then research more! I spent more than needed as i bought a lot of stuff i didnt need or i bought the wrong thing!

Its not a dream, you can do it if i can afford it! By the sounds of your previous cars, i guess your insurance shouldnt be a problem like mine is lol.

if you research it and talk to people that have done the conversion, then you can make a list of every part you will need and prices of it all. I did A LOT of research and i wish i had done more cause it wasnt enough!

Exactly what I'm doing :D

If you have the space just store the car and go and do bits every so often.

An AGU 1.8t with loom, ecu, turbo and clocks are about 600 - 700 on ebay

With the qpeng its £800 standard but then you need a downpipe and so on.

But overtime the cost will be spread out :D

Again back to "i dont have the capability to do the conversion myself". I need someone (A Company like The Phirm) to be able to do the whole lot for me but the costs quoted on their website £2500 +vat Labour only and then you need the engine ....etc
