Title: Hi I'm new! ** NOW WITH PICS! **
Post by: gti190 on 19 January 2010, 22:32
Hello!  I am new to this forum and new to both VW and GTi.  I hope this is being posted in the right section?  I posted this in the general section and was advised you Mk3 owners might be more friendly!!

I have today arranged to purchase a friends 1996 'P' 16v Mk3 Gti anniversary edition.  I pickup the car on Friday this week  smiley  She is a lovely metallic color (purple?), has 89K on the clock, looks clean for the year and is factory standard.

I will be the 3rd owner......... and I'm a girl too.  Do you have many female members here on the site?

I know the cars history as my hubby knows the family that purchased the car new.  He wanted to buy it 8 years ago but couldn't raise the money.  The current owner considered selling the car about 18 months ago and we had first refusal on it but he changed his mind.

Yesterday we were again offered first refusal on the car.

It looks like she needs a bit of TLC. For the past 8 years she has recieved a full service with its MOT but not at VW or VAG.  There are a few bits of lose trim that need new clips and minor stone chips etc.  As I said, the first owner cherished the car and our friend has ensured it is mechanically sound but I think its seen the car wash more times than its been hand polished  sad

I'm sure there are many sections for me to ask questions but if anyone could just answer the following while I get to know the car and the layout of this forum I would appreciate it:

1.  Any common MOT failure points on these cars?

2.  Any areas to consider replacement/upgrade at this mileage?

3.  What are appropriate size wheels (J width and ET) for this model.  I'm sorry but I don't like the look of the current alloys (BBS?) and they have not been cared for and need a refurb.

I will post pictures when I have the car - if that sort of thing is appreciated here?

Cheers

Welcome to the site. Sounds like a nice motor you are getting. Definitely get some pics up as we all love em !!!!!  Main MOT points to look for are the jacking points/sills as the standard jacks are rubbish and do a lot of damage if not used properly. Another point is the ABS light on dash. Some motors have the airbag and abs bulbs removed as they come on a lot and some owners get annoyed and break off the bulbs. No abs warning lamp could be a failure.     Cheers     Deano

For common issues have a look in the maintenance section for further info (and lots of how-to's)

also try my buying guide http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=78701.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=78701.0)

and alloy sizes is personnel choice but o.e is size 7x16 offset et43 and 215/40x16 tyres....and 16's are the best all rounders for the mk3

Thanks for the welcomes so far!

I am excited about getting the car- it seems a really fun car, that is well put together.

I am into my German cars as I have previously owned '73 Beetle(s) and still own a '90 Mercedes 190E.  My fella also owns a 190E 2.6 which is his project car.

I intend to keep the car as original as possible and any work done to it will be with genuine VW parts wherever possible.

The only changes I am considering is the stereo and wheels.

Even though the 16" wheels on the car are part of the anniversary spec, they are in poor condition and I really don't like the design.  A beefier wheel would be my choice.  I have even considered dropping to a 15'' wheel with a bigger profiled tyre for a softer ride as 90% of my driving is commuting to work.

As for the stereo, the car has a Sony tape deck with 6 disc changer in the boot.  I have no idea if this is the factory fitment?  I intend to change it to a decent head unit that will allow me to cap the cabin speakers at around 80htz and fit a sealed 10' sub in the boot.  Im looking for quality not quantity!

Changing to 15" wheels will not help the ride much, I know as I did it on mine.

i run a 10 focal sub, which was £400, and i run Rainbow componets up front (£500) and focal 2 ways in rear doors, the header is ALPINE, wouldnt have anything else and never have, got the changer in the glove box.

sounds real good!

deffo sound quality over crap like JBL (JUNK BUT LOUD)

as i said in your other post, keep the annie wheels incase you sell the car on at a later date, well i would anyhow..

get some pics up when u can..

Well Focal are a little out of my price range!   :undecided:

I have had good results with previous systems using Alpine HU and amplificaion.  For speakers I have always felt that some of the higher level Pioneer ranges have provided a good balance between cost and performance.

Are the dash speakers 10cm and the door speakers 13cm?

A quality set of two-ways in the dash capped at 120htz is my usual install in dash fitments, to keep the soundstage high and up front.  Can I get 17cm drivers in the doors?

Looks like its 16" wheels then.....!

get a decent componet set up for the front, you dont wanna over kill it with shed loads of high end by fitting a set of coax in the doors and on the dash,  it will sound sh!te,trust me im a DJ

the dash top speakers are 1inch tweets as standard, you would need to start cutting to fit something else

the door holds 17cm driver..

hope this helps

Welcome to the site - and also quite interesting knowing the correct size of the speakers in the doors, I'm actually thinkin of installing a good set in the near future. I run a 12" JBL sub and amp (cheap but sounds ok)

Sorry to hijack this thread, I also have a Pioneer head unit which is awsome. Will installing new door speakers benefit from just the head unit or will an amp be better???

Cheers

Post by: gti190 on 20 January 2010, 20:32

Hi christo.

My hubby tells me that if you install quality components up front there should always be an improvement, but even a decent head unit will struggle to get the best out of them.

A dedicated amplifier will push them harder and produce a better, fuller, sound - even at lower levels.  Most people cap the cabin speakers at a set frequency so they don't have to deal with the low bass that they will struggle with. Somewhere between 80htz and 120htz usually.

Some people think its not worth amping the cabin speakers if they are going to be filtered and just throw a sub into the mix.  But as well as a more powerfull sound, amplified components create a better clarity and stereo separation.  This then works in tandem with the improved bass so the overall sound is better and not just a thumping bass line.

Don't worry about the thread-jack - if theres a question that needs answering then it needs an answer!

all my speakers are runnin from a seperate amp in the boot, cant remember the model number but its a big Pheonix gold item, one ofthe older propper ones

but id rather spend my money on a high end component set first, and save up and add a amp at a later date if money is a issue

Here are a few pictures of my new toy.  It's my car and one that my hubby had tried to buy on two occasions before - third time lucky eh?

Golf Gti anniversary edition
'P' plate.
Registered January 1997
86k
Standard
Mystic Blue (purple?    )

I think the first owner must have been a car enthusiast or collector because in the car's first four years it covered only 2000 miles!

This car was then purchased by the in-laws of hubby's work colleague.  They were the 2nd owners and purchased the car in December 2000 for £10,995.  He was a car buff and during his ownership the car was cherished and garaged.  It was only sold because the family needed a spacious car to ferry around an elderly family member.

Hubby was offered first refusal to purchase this car during 2002 but at the time was not in a position to afford it.  A work colleague of his bought it and paid around 6k for it.

In the past 7 years the car has been used as his daily driver.  It has been serviced, though not at VW or to VW specifications, and instead has received a 'full' service every year with its MOT at the owners local garage.  During this period the car has been looked after, but not loved as such.

It is in tidy condition but any stonechips, minor scratches and trim wear has not been addressed. The wheels have been allowed to deteriorate quite badly.

About 18months ago hubby heard the Golf may be back on the market.  Once again he was offered first refusal but in the end the owner decided to keep it.

On Monday this week he received a text message out of the blue saying the Golf was for sale and again, he had first refusal.  I said yes!

We picked her up today and here are a few shots taken a few hours after we had her.

Looks nice....hope you enjoy driving it. Only advise now is to get some boot polish around the black trim especially the boot spoiler and front splitter. Boot polish is great, first coat will look crap but second comes up lovely. Use it on mine every fortnight. Just be careful to wipe it off the paintwork if it spills or runs. I use the Asda own brand in a gold bottle with a proper sponge applicator on top.  Sounds petty but will make the world of difference to your pictures.     Cheers     Deano

Hi Deano - boot poilish huh?  Thanks for the tip.  It has had a go over with 'back to black' but I think its the first time the trim has been treated!  Its better but not fab and I suppose it just needs several coats to get it looking good.  As for the front splitter its very very pale and we thought about spraying it with plastic paint.

The whhel condition has improved with the applications of autoglym wheel cleaner with a toothbrush and about 57 attempts!   The wheels do need a refurb but Im not sure what to do as they are the only bit of the car I dont like (sorry).

It will probably be a better option for us to put these in storage and get a different design - probably VW though.  Are wheels from other VW's easily transferable?  Is the PCD and bore the same across the VW family and what models have an appropriate ET?  Are the wheels hubcentric?  We havn't taken one off to look yet

Is it a true 16v? If so they're rare as rocking horse sh!t. Think there were only 150 made?

Mystic blue is a sweet colour. I regret breaking my 16v GTI but I had no choice.

Personally due to it being a rare 16v anni, I'd keep it 100% original and try to keep that mileage down.. be worth something in the future

If you don't like the wheels, try getting them refurbed black with a polished lip, and then lower the car slightly.. seen it done and it looks awesome :)

I'd love one of these though, I'd restore it back to its former glory, stick it in storage and forget about it!

I think that's probably the rarest colour of Anniversarys.
I wanted a blue one...but couldn't get. Had to settle for Satin Silver.

Certainly pretty rare in 16v form.

The wheels are personal taste...I love 'em.
To me, it makes the Anniversary what it is...

But if you don't like them, pretty much and Mk3/Mk4 5 bolt wheel will fit.

Edited - typo.

Mk5 is 5x112 so will not fit, mk4 wheels will but the tyres are too big as standard.

5x100 with a 35 offset is what you need.

5x100 with a 35 offset is what you need.

Not strictly true...it's width dependant.
ET35ish is good for a 6" wide rim...ET38ish on a 6.5" wide rim and ET42/43 on a 7" wide rim.
7" wide ET35 will fit...but then become tyre dependant as to whether it'll scuff or not at the rear.
Most aftermarket wheels tend to be ET35 to make them fill the arches better...but sadly, when lowered, many also cause scrubbing.

Factory (OEM)wheels tend to be as above.
I have never come accross a ET35 VW wheel yet...the least offset I've ever seen is ET38 on early GTI wheels (6" wide)

Yes but a 7" wheel with a 43mm offset can hit the rear shock, I know as I tried Seat alloys on mine.

Definately do not paint spray paint on the splitter, several coats of Ag Plastic Conditioner (Bumper dressing) will make it look as good as new, just allow to dry thoroughly between coats.

The wheels on mine were in pretty bad shape, I took each wheel off individually, pressure washed them, agitated with some wheel cleaner (wonder wheels is fine, Bilberry is top stuff).  When you clean the spokes work all of the ground out dirt out with a stiff brush, you will notice parts of the wheel de-laminating, not much you can do about that unless you refurb them. (About 50/wheel for these).  But after a good clean up they will look pretty good, esp if you apply some tyre dressing too.

A really nice car & as lots of people have said very rare in 16v form so keep it clean!

i also think it nbeeds to be kept as standard as you car really, with the exeption of new suspension (Lower) and like you i dont like annie wheels but i would still keep them so you can return to standard at a later date if need be.

as for painting the black bits on the bumper   DONT DO IT

Defo use the boot polish....cheapest way to do it and probably the quickest. First coat will take about 5 minutes to dry and then go for second coat. Within 20 minutes will look like new.
Also good advice from VR6 Joe earlier regarding the wheels....polished edges and black inside. Already got that planned for mine when the warmer weather returns. Just need a week off work as well to do it !!!!!!

I will take a photo of a boot spoiler that had been treated with boot polish two weeks later peanut butter then left with nothing on it for two months, I used Autoglym Bumper Care on half of it, left it outside for 10 days now and I'll get a picture, it's hamazing!

A nice even coating of boot polish will last 2 weeks no problems.  I use it on mine every two weeks and have the car cleaned every week.  The results can be seen in my sig picture where the black parts look clean and most importantly BLACK !!!!!!!  Other products will do the same but will cost a bit more than the 89p I pay for mine.     Cheers     Deano

Thanks for all the advice it is much appreciated and thank you for the interest and replies.

Whatever I do wheel wise I will keep the BBS alloys in one way or another (even if only in storage) as I now appreciate they are part of the car and without them the car will be lacking something.  But if I am going to see it every day and drive it then I want it looking nice for me.

As much as I would try to keep the mileage down, the car will be my daily driver so use is inevitable   But, its a great car and I think shoving it in a garage and not enjoying it would be a real shame.

I have always been 'into' cars and have owned all sorts including old Beetles, Land Rover, Elf, Mercedes 190, Micra and Honda Civic Type-R's (both shapes).  This is possibly my favorite out of all of them and I really mean that!

Is it really that rare then - the colour/anniversary spec and 16v?  It is a 16v and its really fun to drive.  Its quicker than we thought it would be

I have no plans to sell it but what do you guys estimate its worth to be?

Back to wheels - am I right in thinking Mercedes wheels can be fitted to some VW's?

My hubby is a Mercedes man, a 190 man to be exact and has some nice Merc alloys in our garage from various projects.

The Merc wheels are PCD 112 and bore 66.6.  Are wobble nuts safe do you think for only a 2mm PCD difference?

We have 6.5J ET35 and 6J ET48 both 15 inch designs but nice and chunky.  Also have 8J ET34.  I can post pics for opinions?

Are the Golfs wheels hubcentric?  If so is getting hold of spiggot rings easy?

(should I be starting a different 'wheels' thead?)

Thanks again.  This seems a friendly forum even though Im not 19 years old and not into fitting 18 inch rims and 15 inch subs!!!!!

Merc wheels will not fit with wobble bolts, Golf mk3 is 5x100, you will need to run adaptors which will cost you around £200

If you going to do it then use the et48 wheels as with 20mm adaptors the final offset will be et28.

i will give my info on mk3 wheels

early gti had 6x15 et38 195/50
later gti had 6.5x15 et43 205/50
anni had 7x16 et43 with 215/40

Yes but a 7" wheel with a 43mm offset can hit the rear shock, I know as I tried Seat alloys on mine.

I find that hard to believe...
Every Anniversary GTI has 7" x 16" ET43 on 215 wide tyres...and they are nowhere near the rear dampers.

The SEAT wheels must have been wider, or had a different offset.

mine had the longbeach as standard on my aug 1993 car, and came with 195/50..

also, id say the car is worth about the £1500 mark, quite rare, but most iv seen are in that colour, the rarest 16v annies were the metalic or flat black

seen quite a few silver ones too, i was never sure if the 150 run was true, the cars dont have numbers (like the Edition 30 mk 5) and i know VW used to tell a few white lies to bump sales   so their could have been alot more than 150 but who knows, either way it is quite a rarity.

I don't expect many positive replies  :undecided: , but a friend of mine photoshopped some Merc wheels onto the car for me.  Now Im not saying I am going to change the wheels for Merc wheels if they can be fitted, but it has given me some ideas.

I think the more solid chunky designs look better?

AMG monoblocks

Mercedes 8 hole design (not the best donor picture to be fair - the wheels are dirty and look skinny - some have a small dish and look much better )

Mercedes 15 hole - looks classy on a Mercedes not sure here?

Carat Duchalet wheels made for Mercedes.  Rare - but I know of a set for sale 16x8.

AMGs look the best, but I wouldn't personally bother with adapters, etc...

I'm sure you can find some alloys, which will fit perfectly and you will like them too. Get some "anni"s or deep dishes ;)

The trouble is by the time you add in £200 plus the risk of running adaptors it is no longer a cheap set of wheels.

The cost is one thing, but the whole hassle of doing this is just not worth it. I mean, you have to be seriously desperate for those wheels, if you do that.

I'm not saying that i will be fitting Merc alloys!  The pictures were to get opinions on what kind of design suits the mk3 better and to show the kind of wheel designs I like.  I think the more solid and chunky the wheel is the better.

That's why I'm not keen on the standard wheels already on the car - they are too 'spindly'/'spokey'.  Hard to explain!

Do VW do any designs similar to the Merc wheels that I like?

I was running these, 7x17 with 205/40/17's, your right in that flatter wheels seem to suit a mk3.

I don't pick on everything you post...only the plainly incorrect stuff.
Anniversary GTIs come with 7" wide wheels, ET43 and I have both those, and coilovers...and have no rubbing.
So you can't say it will rub.

I never had rubbing standard...neither did VW, which is whay they chose to type approve 7" wide ET43 wheels for the Mk3.
Maybe it's the brand of coilover...which you chose not to mention in your previous post?

Giving the impression 7" wide ET43 wheels will rub on a standard Mk3 Anniversary (which the OP has) is incorrect...unless SEAT have different lengths for 7" and 43mm to VW?

Not looking to get involved in anything between Wayne and Ess Three but here is my one and only comment on the issue anyway!!!!!  I bought the 7inch wide Anni wheels and fitted them to my motor which is lowered 40mm on the back. Tyres were rubbing on the rear spring plate. Granted my tyres are the Mark 4 tyres and are too big but lowered even more on coilovers would still be the same problem. Sorry Ess Three but I have to agree with Wayne on this one Mate and have the rubbed tyres to prove it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wheels were 7x16 with a stamped offset of et43, tyres fitted were 205/45/16, I had Hottuning coilovers fitted and the rear wheels were touching the shock, I would have needed a 3mm spacer for clearance, did not bother in the end.

So for some reason they rubbed hence why I said they will / might.

Sorry that you feel I might not know what I am on about but for me they would not have fitted.

So you have the wrong size tyres on...and you wonder why it rubs?
It rubs...because you have the wrong sized tyres on. The rear spring plated only get rubbed if the diameter of the tyre is too large.

On 215/40/16 tyres - as VW fitted - to a car on standard suspension - as the original poster has - it won't rub, because it left the factory that way!

Fit the correct sized tyres...and fit decent suspension - not some cheap-ass lashed up £200 set of coilovers - and it won't rub.
I have Koni coilovers, 215/40/16 tyres, lowered about 70mm and Anni 7" wide wheels...and it has never rubbed.

The problem there is the coilovers. Better designed coilovers remove this problem - or rather, don't cause it in the first instance.
Besides, I was referring to the original poster - who does not appear to have Hottuning coilovers fitted.

Other coilovers don't cause this problem. If the spring free lengths are correctly chosen, the problem doesn't occur...sadly, cheap suspension kits don't do their research properly.

I did state that my tyres were too big IF you can be bothered to read my post!!!!!!!!!!  If I want to run these tyres that is my business is it not????   I am not running cheap suspension as you put it. You know bugger all about my set up so keep your strong opinions to yourself Mate.  You seem to know a lot about nothing as all I said was 7 inch wheels could rub as mine did and Waynes did. Funny how ours did and others I know of did but yours didn't. Or did you use mega expensive parts that us mere mortals could not afford???

If you want to argue the toss that's up to you but don't come on here (on someone else's post in fact) slagging off my set up which you know nothing about.

No, you are just running the wrong size of tyres...

You got me sussed...I know nothing.  I know what tyres will cause  problems on a Mk3…and that certain suspension will also cause problems…
But hey, what do I care?
I should just let the golfGTI.co.uk Mk3 ministry of miss-information keep giving people piss-poor advice.

Mine didn’t rub because I fitted the correct size of tyre, and decent suspension.
Not mega expensive but not £200 cheap crap either.

And if you weren’t, you wouldn’t be rubbing…and wouldn’t be whinging about it.

Ess Three..... Can you post up here the exact bit in my post where I complain about my tyres rubbing.  I am not stupid and know that larger tyres will rub who wouldn't???????  My tyres no longer rub and only rubbed for 5 mins before I resolved it but my post does add proof that 7inch wheels WILL meet the spring plate. So it seems to me the only person here whinging about tyres and suspension is you Mate. My car runs to my satisfaction and yours to your satisfaction so where is the problem??

Does that not suggest you were complaining of rubbing?

You say above:

my post does add proof that 7inch wheels WILL meet the spring plate

But they don't, on standard suspension or decent quality coilovers and when fitted with the correct size tyres.
VW sold 750 Aniversary GTIs in the UK with exactly that size of wheel/tyre...just like mine, and the original poster's car - and they don't rub!

So 7" wheels don't meet the spring plate...
Being pedantic, you'd need about 25" wheels for the wheel to hit the spring plate at all...as normaly it would be the tyre!

Yet an Anniversary doesn't with 215 wide tyres?

What profile were/are your tyres?
