I need a bigger car now that we have had child number two. I don't think the Golf will be big enough to carry all the baby paraphernalia around. I'm looking at MPVs and SUVs.
My GTI spec is as follows:
2007 57 plate
32,000 miles
5 door
DSG
Cloth
18" Monza 2's
Tornado red
Xenons
Arm rest with iPod prep
Hi line computer
Purchased through a dealer in the Netherlands and is 100% UK spec.
Got a Glass's quote last week which is as follows:
Trade in - excellent: £ 14,600.00
Trade in - average: £ 13,000.00
Trade in - below average: £ 11,450.00
Dealer Retail price £ 16,400.00
Private Sale price: £ 14,101.00
Was talking to someone I know who is a Renault salesman and he phoned a few traders and they will only offer 12750 for it because it is an import
Popped into Hyundai to look at the Santa Fe and the salesman phoned the local VW dealer and they will only offer 12250 for it as it is an import
I didn't expect to get full trade in value but the quotes seem a bit low. My initial savings are being wiped out!
Do you think this is a reasonable part ex value for my car or not?
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Kev

The dealers are right, grey imports are worth a good bit less and can be hard to shift, £12500 is going to be about its money.
-
I'm being pedantic but it's a parallel (EU)import not a grey import
I was hoping that it would only be 1,000 to 1,500 off top trade in value. I'm sure the dealers would still sell it for a fair whack.
-
Sounds like they're not treating it as a parallel.
-
I have two children - a 4 and a 2 year old.
I think the size of the Golf is perfect for such a family TBH.
Dont sell it!!!!!!!

Agreed. A guy I work with has recently bought an 06 5 door A3, which is basically a 5 door mk5, and fits all his baby stuff in it no problem. Hell, my grandparents had no problem in fitting 3 kids in the back of a 5 door mk2
If it helps, I'm able to fit 2 decent sized guitar amp+speaker combis in the back of my mk5, with a guitar and a bass in hard cases, two full duffle bags, a suitcase and a guy in the back seats and another guy in the passenger seat. We could have fit more but didn't have more
If you really do need the extra space give Jettas or Passats a look. Miles of space and much more subtle and stylish than any SUV
-

They should know its a parallel import. I told the salesmen that it was an EU import from Holland and 100% UK spec. I specifically told them to tell their contacts that info.
I guess they are just playing safe as some EU imports can be slightly different spec.
They are using the import excuse to give me rock bottom and to make a tidy profit.
-
I've part ex'd two Golfs in the past with VW dealers - each time they knocked off £500 for it being an "import".
As long as they are full UK spec and have a VW UK service history they are quite happy - some have even sold "imports" from new themselves
Both cars were around 2 years old

I can get by with day to day stuff but for days out and weekends away space is a bit tight. The pram system takes up most of the boot leaving very little room for anything else.
I've never been a big fan of the Passats. I was tempted by the Skoda Octavia vRS estate at one point and they are doing discount equivalent to VAT until the end of the month.
Lots of people have been telling me to keep the GTI. One guy at work was saying how he managed with 2 kids in a Mini Metro.

I think I'd probably get a better part ex from a VW dealer if I was to buy another VW. It's just that the dealers I've been to see, Renault and Hyundai, don't want to sell my car themselves so phoning VW dealers and other traders and only getting the bottom trade in price. The Renault salesman that I know could get me 12750 plus 3,500 off a new Koleos. Not that I want the Koleos, it was just so that he could work out some figures for me.
I think I would be happy if I could get 13,000 to 13,500 but it seems like this is going to be difficult unless I sell private.

Makes no difference if it is a parallel or grey import and even with uk spec it still started life outside this country, dealers will not be keen to pay top money as they can be hard to shift, put it another way given the choice of a uk car or an import I will always pick the uk car if it was available new here.

All Golfs started life outside this country. You order a car from a UK dealer and it gets made in Germany and then shipped to the UK dealer. You order a car from say a dealer in the Netherlands to the same spec as the UK dealer and it gets made in Germany and then shipped to the Netherlands and then makes its way to the UK. Both scenarios same spec, made on the same production line.
I agree that it might put off some buyers therefore dealers may be reluctant to buy it at full trade price in case it sits on their forecourts for a longer time than a UK car. Dealers should make people aware that it is the same spec and that their warranty will cover the same things as a UK car.
I'd buy an import used car if it was 100% UK spec and a grand cheaper but I wouldn't buy one if it was not 100% UK spec.
-
Stick with the golf and see how you get on
We had a second kid last year and we have been away for a few weekends and have managed no problem, thats including a pram and a travel cot as well as the rest of the gear
I fancy a S4 avant but most of me wants to keep the golf
-
FWIW, when I had my kids (well the wife did, I was just a passenger!), we had a 306. Not big enough.
We moved to a more family-friendly car - a Subaru Impreza Turbo wagon!!!
When our 2nd child appeared, we went to a Scooby Turbo saloon. Wierd choice, as I'd also had a Labrador that resembles "Clifford, the big red dog" = bl00dy thing used to rest his head on the handrake, as he couldn't fit in the back!
We then moved onto an Audi S4 Avant. - Loads of boot space, and a V6 twin turbo  Had some good trips out in that
Now the kids are more mobile (6 & 9), the Golf 3dr is perfect.
Perhaps a roof box is a cheaper option.
DAn

Fair point, however if it was cheaper to start with then it will be worth less come the time to move it on.
-
I think they want to punish people for getting good deals in the first place and not using overpriced UK dealers.
If I somehow managed to haggle 5000 off a new UK GTI, I wouldn't expect to get less for it than someone who paid list price.
-
I do want to keep the Golf as it is such a good car but it is such a hassle with a toddler and a newborn. I haven't got any space to store a roof rack when it's not in use so I can't go down that route. I only live in a small terraced house with a tiny garden.
My wife also wants a double buggy and they can be huge!
-
It's a shame you're finding the Golf too small but I'm a bit surprised you're finding it a hassle
You have five doors and a hatchback with a pretty deep boot. Leg and headroom won't be problem for you for many years !
I would have thought the only time you would really struggle is when you're going on holiday with suitcases & buggies

I gather that the space problem is occasional rather than all the time.

I've just had to let my GTi go. A combination of two toddlers and having to do a lot more miles than I was before in my old job, has meant I've swapped it for a BMW tractor. Once my work settles down in 6 months time and mileage returns to the usual 6/8k pa I was doing before, I will buy a MK6 GTI.
Anyway I px'd the following car at a BMW dealer on Dec 22nd against a very keenly priced 4 month old BMW and snatched his hand off at £13,850 !
My car was :
07 07 Golf GTi 5dr DSG
Diamond Black
18"s, Full Leather, Armrest
Hi Line
27k and FSH
Mint condition
But a Import from Cyprus - full UK Spec.
Bidding can be stupid from the dealers but its worth going at as there are deals to be had. I had bids at £10k, but had to work up to the £13,850. If i had paid over the top on the new one I would have understood, but it looks to be £4k under book compared too many other dealers. So hopefully, will run that for 6 months, make a few quid on it and then put a smile back on my face again and get a MK6

I guess the only time I will really struggle will be holidays and weekends away visiting family and friends. I could just hire a car for those occasions I suppose.

They look pretty neat. Wonder how secure the straps are?

How did you manage to get it up from 10k to 13,850? Did you just keep pestering the dealer to get more quotes/bids until you were happy?
-
No, that was the variation of bids he was getting. Even the trader said it was crazy.
We initially ended up at £12.5k, but when I said it had got DSG, he came back at £13.5k as they had a buyer wanting one, so I managed to squeeze hime to £13,850.
My other VW and Audi dealers were coming in at £12.5k.
-
Sounds about what I am being offered - between 12,250 and 12,750. 2 and a half year old car except without leather. I think I'd be happy if I can get 13k for it.
-
If it's a dealer I wouldnt bother mentioning it was an import TBH. Either way they will shaft you so I would take a slight perverse pleasure in doing the same to them  The dealer won't know (except maybe if they are VAG) it's an import until it's too late
If it was a private sale, sure tell them the truth.. they'd tell that just by looking at the service book/data sticker
-
stick it on ebay & PS - would think you will get easy £13k perhaps a little more

I thought they could tell it was an import by checking the reg number. But then again on the V5C form it doesn't say that it is an import. They'd tell by looking at the PDI stamp in the log book though but then it will be too late
Do dealers normally ask if a part ex car is an import or not?
-

I'd hope to get at least 13,500 private. I even bought an extra years warranty with VW so that should make it a bit of a safer buy.
I've not sold anything on ebay so I wouldn't want my first item to be my car
-
Of the numerous garages I tried, they all checked the history and it came up import. A few even rang VW.

I would not bother with Ebay, I have found Auto trader loads better for shifting a car to be honest, Ebay is a complete waste of time now.
-
I'm in a similar position. My wife and I have a 11-month old baby and evening going away for 1 night necessitates that the rear seat is used for luggage. This perhaps says as much about my wife's packing as it does the size of the car. Either way though, when we have a second child the car just won't hack it.
My car is also an import from the Netherlands. It's an 06 with just under 30,000 miles on it. We've been looking into buying a new 3.0 V6 Touareg next year, which will hopefully satisfy the needs of the family until the children are grown up, however my first impressions of how much my GTI is worth doesn't make it worth trading it in, not for me anyway. Someone even suggested it might be worth as little as £8K when I want to trade it in, and considering the car is all paid for, it is worth more to me than that £8K.
-
I've been to a few dealers as was considering changing my Ed 30 and if the car is indeed full UK spec, in good condition and with a full service history they claim there is about £500-£1000 between a UK sourced 2-3 year old car that is an EU parallel import of the same condition. This gap grows significantly if it is not full UK spec because there is no point of reference to value it against.
The gap is also smaller once the 2 vs 3 year warranty doesnt come into play.
If you have a GTI in good nick my advice would be to sell privately anyway. It's a car that will always be in strong demand and is within reach of the masses with a standard bank loan. This means an extra grand or 2 in your pocket vs chopping it in.
Also looking at the sky high prices for the Mark 6 good examples of used MKV must continue to attract good prices.
£8K for an 06 with 30k is way to low in my opinion.
-
I guess the best way to get best deal would be to sell it private.
£8k seem very low for an 06 plate.
-
Yeah, I took it with a pinch of salt. That was it's projected value this time next year, but I only do 6K a year in it. I can't see me wanting to sell it anyway, regardless of how much I might get for it.

You have had more luck than most people I know, all I ever get is daft emails and silly offers, a few of my friends also say it is a waste of time now.
