I have just been told there is a 170 gtd in the show room ready to sell, but i have a Mk6 GTi on order build week 9 . Not sure which to buy now??
What are the pro's & cons of these 2 cars? I have driven a 140 jetta the new one and was impressed with the engine?? :undecided:
I currently have an ED30 58 plate ???
-
I've just come home from the dealership.
I'm torn between the two as well. There's going to be a massive wait for my order. If they take my order now, it won't be process until April. So delivery July/Aug.
I drove the GTD and GTi back to back. The GTD is a very nice all rounder, and real world performance probably isn't much different.
I guess it comes to how desperate you are for a car. If you don't mind waiting then hang on in there buddy!
As others have said, it'll all be worth it in the end!
-
Insane question, the PETROL GTI is the better car but it all depends on circumstances, how much mileage you do, etc etc.
-
Oil is 110 per liter cheeper for GTD , for ed30 its 119 a liter petrol, my milage is 12 000 a year?? tax is much cheeper for GTD 125 quid a year??
-
If you were ordering today i would say save the hassle and go for the GTD in London or any city day to day it will be as good imo. But as your cars only BW09 thats not far off, there will always be a what if, if you go with the GTD now.
-

It's not necessarily the better car as that is very subjective to the person buying it. Unless you actually make use of the full rev range of the GTI regularly (which most people don't) then the GTD makes a very good case for itself.
I'd be hard pressed to make a choice between them.
It's a bit like saying the R is the best Golf. It's not. It's just the highest spec Golf. The best Golf is the one that suits your needs best. In my not very humble, tired and grumpy opinion of course
-
if you like driving, go for the petrol. if you like driving, but money is tighter, save your cash now for the extra fuel later and get a mk5 gti.
if its just a car to you, or you do a lot of miles then the GTD will be a great car.
i'd guess if you drive the gtd hard you won't get much better fuel economy than the petrol.
i'm seriously regretting opting for diesel, and also for cancelling my order for a gti.

I already own an Ed30 58 plate!! But i have been offered 170GTD today but also have a mk6 gti on order bild week 9 not confirmed though???

The GTD's only advantages are all financial - cheaper, better mpg, lower road tax band and lower company car tax. Even if you do a low mileage, financially the diesel makes sense. Roughly £1500 for a private owner driving 12,000 miles.
But the GTI is superior in every single other way.

Which way is it superior then? i woud like to know? Thanks mate Steve
The car they have if fully loaded sat nav ACC the all lot winter pack, lux pack, xenons!!
-
I'd keep yoour edition 30 to be honest. But if you fancy a change, take them both out for a good test drive! Good luck, you must be loaded LOL.
-
Which way is it superior then? i woud like to know? Thanks mate Steve
Quicker, faster, lighter, quieter, more engaging to drive, better turn-in, better weight distribution, better feel-good factor, heater warms up quicker.
Unless you prefer the GTD's grey cloth seats, silver grille stripes, exhaust placement, Seattle/Vancouver alloys and 7mm more ride height up front, of course. Don't get me wrong, both are exceptionally good cars and the differences are smaller than they've ever been between a petrol and diesel. In the real world I think the ones you'd notice most are the noise, the heater warming up and on the odd occasion that you really want to go fast, the performance.
-
mac7 has got the nail and hit it right on the head.
-
Okay I'll modify my previous comments as to what's best for you.
Do you use high revs much?
Yes= GTI
No= GTD with re-map
They both have their good and bad points. I know a GTI would be wasted on my Dad for instance so it's not the best Golf for him
-
Keep the Ed30 . Unless you want a slower car
-
My current car is a diesel which is much better on mpg but sounds like.... a diesel ! I missed the sportier sound of the petrol engine and running out of revs far too quickly in the diesel hence I've got a GTI on order..
Personally if lower running costs are most important, I'd vouch for the diesel. If you're not that bothered about more frequent fuel stops, higher insurance etc, the GTI would be the one for me
-
Well guys , i have just takin it out the GTD for a test drive, and its a fantastic car IMO refined its not not noisy at all brilliant in corners!! Loads of torqe but he just offered me a 28,500 quid motor for 27,000 so its tempting offer?? Dynaudio ACC 510 sat nav 18'' alloys, DSG, tinted window's, multifunction steering wheel, flappy paddle and it goes like stink!!.
What to do ?????? Its also in white and I dont do white ????? But with this offer???????

I did. I do.
Glad you enjoyed it. If he's offered it to you for £27K, tell him you'll pay £26K.
-
Steve, have you tested the mk6 gti?
Best way to get a true comparison to the GTD and your ed30.
-
My personal view on the GTD is that it is a compromise, and if I was spending that much money I wouldn't want to be doing that. To be asking the question the OP must have his doubts ... how will you feel when a 'real' GTI pulls up beside you
That said if you do a lot of mileage its a very good compromise but otherwise...
Just my opinion

Yes i have twice , and thought GTD is just as good if not better??? But undecided ??? The gti is also very very good , but build week 9 and not confirmd is doing my F%*(^# head in to honest???
-
Didn't VW do a GTD years ago (mk1/mk2). Very good car especially for company car drivers and farmers (cheap fuel).
At the end of the day what do you want out of a car??
A practical, fast, desirable and fun hot hatch or a practical and sensible warm (except in the winter as diesels takes ages to get warm) hatch.
GTD is a brilliant and sensible car. GTI is just way more fun.
-
Steve, I'd hang in there BW09 isn't that far off!
I tested both cars and GTD was too understated for me (but that's just my opinion!).
-

Yep, MK2 GTD:

Jay on here used to have one but I think it kept breaking down :(

I test drove both back to back, with no intention of buying either... for about 3 hours each.
I was always going to order the Golf R, it was just a way of testing a manual v's DSG.
The GTD didn't look quite as good as the GTI because the ride height was slightly higher and the exhausts don't look so good. The GTD did have better looking wheels
The GTI handled a bit better - probably due to its slightly lower stance. Power wise, the GTI had a bit more, but I was surprised by the GTD and how much ooooomph it actually had. People saying a chipped GTD v a GTI would beat a GTI are probably right - but its not a fair comparison as a chipped GTI would beat a chipped GTD!
In my opinion, a diesel car is always a second choice. IF I was doing big miles, I'd feel like I'd HAVE to take a diesel for cost saving. If this was the case, a GTD would be a great choice. I'd always pick a petrol if it was feasible though, as I enjoy revving the t1ts out of it!!
It depends on your circumstances... big miles = GTD, low miles = GTI!
A BW09 car is likely to arrive in March... so I would hang on for what you really want. Whats another few weeks wait?!?!

It's OK, you'll just about keep up with your remap.
Thing is - unless you're really close (or behind it)- you won't know.
Good thing or bad I don't know. No dis to the R by the way I just love my GTI.

The most sensible comments i've read yet. agree with everything you say.

Who cares what other people have?
GTD DSG for all day and every day and a Mk2 16V for a Sunday morning B road blast.

+1 Saying that Iv'e seen a mk 2 GTI with over 400k on the clock so longevity is not an issue, just fuel cost.
-
Im dreading the day an R pulls up next to me
Why?
Just beacuse its a little faster, drinks more fuel, costs far more to service(regular haldex oil changes and also will need cambelt), costs more to tax, costs more insurance, looks little different to a base model and even has base model black mirrors, costs more, The R badge few people know what it meens, i could go on but i will be linched
So its the model above so what. The GTI badge is known by everyone its a household name it has history and heritage.

What do you think of the mk 6 gtd 170 snoopy?
-
costs far more to service(regular haldex oil changes and also will need cambelt),
On a side note not related to this thread... should I take the £250 fixed price servicing then if servicing is more expensive?
I heard the rear diff needs serviced every 20,000 miles? To be honest it'd probably take me 2 1/2 years to reach 20,000 miles!!
-
^ I would. I would have if i was going to deal with this dealer again. I don't know if you can take it out with another dealer. Its something i may ask about.
-
What do you think of the mk 6 gtd 170 snoopy?
I actually like it. I did test drive one and it was a hard choice. Im no longer a boy racer, I got that out my system years ago with my first GTIs  So an extra tenth hear, and extra tenth there, and having to ring an engines neck is not really my thing anymore.
I did think the GTD was expensive for what it is.
Our other car was a TDI150PD till very resent, I was driving it for my commuter for the past two years and the torque is what puts a smile on your face day in day out and it can easily upsetting rev happy petrols. The extra 15-20mpg average over the GTI was good too.
The new TDI170CR is a great engine so much more refined and quiet than the older units and has a far better power delivery.
The interior of the GTD i think i like better than the GTI, i like the seat colour better reminds me of my mk1 GTI black/gray colour interior. I also prefer the GTD exhaust layout.
The deisel particulate filter is one of the reasons i did not go for the GTD as i would have to drive it a reasonable speed consatntly for iirc about 15 miles every so often to clear it out is what i was told?
It was a hard choice i will tell you to pick the GTI over the GTD.
The only reason i went for the GTI was i have a couple mk1 GTIs and i fancied trying petrol again. No other reason really.
When people talk about performance differences they always quote 0-60 etc. I look at the more everyday figures i may use. For example 30-70 through gears for overtaking trucks. 30-50 in 3rd for getting past a car, 50-70 in 4th,5th for cars, and 50-70 for motorways. In these cases theres not a massive difference between GTI and GTD because the GTDs torque helps.
-
p3eps....what rear diff?
-
It depends what define as a better car?
For those who do not want to pay the extra £500 list price and running cost, the GTD is a decent buy. Personally I just go for the 140 TDI if my budjet is tight! More comfortable with similar midrange! If you want more mph, you can always remap it.
I cannot find a single magazine that rate the GTD as the best TD out there but the GTI got plenty of admirer.
GTI is an establishment like a Porsche 911. Been around for ages and often been use as a benchmark to beat when other manufacterer want to bring out something similar and better!
Most people do not know what you mean when you said I drive a GTD, Golf R, BMW 330d or Merc 320cdi but most people in the pub will know about GTI is a fast Golf!
I always want a GTI when I was driving crap cars during my teenage years. That's why I can justify spending £27000 on a GTI but not 26500 on a GTD!
-
I have been driving diesels for the past 15 years with a recent one being an Audi A3 Sport.
The reason I have ordered a GTI is because I want a real world drivers car. The petrol engine is far lighter than a diesel engine which is nose heavy. The fact my wife can get near the 40s with a light foot from a sports car is fantastic. I have wrote else where that I live in the country so can make good use of the GTI driving dynamics , however if I lived in a large town I would consider the GTD.

hmmm.... no.
Just because the driver of the R is going to glance over and have the "bet you wish you had bought one of these" looks on his face. Deep down we both know* hes right :embarassed:
Even though I know he got ripped off

Deep down in my case i know another GTI is what i wanted, Ive owned GTIs for over 20 years and so i wanted another. I could have easily afforded an R but i picked the car that did what i wanted. Even if it had, had a GTI badge on it, i would rare if ever need the extra go or the complex setup of heldex to deal with in 10 years time when it all goes wrong etc. Even back in the day i picked a late 8V mk2 over the 16v as it did everything better for what i wanted at the time, i never looked at 16V drivers and thought i wish i had bought one of those.
Must admit i have gave that look to mk2 GTI owners back in the late 80s when insurance went crazy due to joy riders when i went back to running the mk1 GTI  because i know they were paying thousands of pounds for insurance were as the mk1 insurance never went up
-
I think it has all been said now Steve, so what are you going to do?
Stick with the ED30?
Buy a GTD?
Buy a GTI?
Or even....Bugg3r it I'll have the R please - you only live once!
-
p3eps....what rear diff?
The rear diff on the R for the 4wd system. Apparently it needs serviced every 20,000 miles.

Hi Hurdy, For me I wont be getting the R , I could have had an R32 a few weeks ago with just 2800 miles on the clock minter!! That is a better car than the new R in IMO. Be good to hear what your thoughts are on new R or the old R32 ? which is the best? I have just been to have another look at the GTD170 with the Mrs and she likes it aswell, but at 28500 quid its too much money it is fully loaded though in white?? I really dont think there is very much in it at all between the GTI & GTD 170 splitting hairs me thinks?? Support guys???? My GTI MK6 build week 9 is not confirmed ??? I'm still in right tizz what to do??
-
Week 9 is week starting 1st march. You should have it around 10 to 21 days later (depending how good your dealer is ). The build weeks are not moving around as much at present they may move a week one way or the other but they seem to be settling down. So you should have it mid to late March. Thats not that long away and at least you will get the bad weather out the way.
Week 5 cars were been confirmed last week, so next week should be week 6 and so on if it all keeps to plan
-
Steve,
I've had diesels and they simply don't excite me like the petrol GTI does. Sure they are good with fuel, but they don't stir the soul like the GTI does. GTI wins for me any day over a GTD.
R32 v's New Golf R - The new Golf R by a country mile - lighter, with more power, better handling and cheaper to run than the R32. Styling, the R32 looked odd with the chrome front and the new R looks better, but still not as good from the front as the new GTI.
GTI v's new R - Is the R worth 5k extra - yes!
-
Thanks Hurdy!! Have you driven the 170GTD mk6 ? Its come on heaps & bounds since the mk5 tdi!! Bloody amazing car!! Get it maped and there you will have a lovley car??? If I wait for GTImk6 and get that mapped out just as good as the R IMO??? If they drop the price on that GTD170 to 25, 000 ill take it??? But I doubt it some how???? Balls in there court!! Thanks Steve
-
They may offer some sort of deal as they may have someone lined up to take over your build slot that wants maybe a fully speced car they can make a few quid off.
-

Hi Snoopy, My order for the mk6 is very basic i'm not into hi spec motor's , lux pac 3 door reflex silver which is the fastest, and of course DSG, 18's shadow monza. I do think you lose a lot money when resale comes along??? Leather is a joke to much money for that? Xenons yes nice to have but, I prefer philips Xtream for 27 quid hahaha
-
Steve we run a mk5 gti & GT sport 170tdi & real world driving there really is'nt much in it.The GT 170 is a cracking car & if i was buying a mk6 it would be the GTD.
-

As long as the build week is not confirmed the dealer can change an ordered cars spec.
Meening he can change anything in your ordered cars options. Any of the option can be added, removed or changed including the colour. If he has someone else lined up for it, he can tailer it too them.
-
To the people who say they prefer the GTI because of the petrol powered kicks it gives, how many of you considered the much cheaper and more powerfull Leon Cupra?
-

Looks awful and has a cheap interior.... can't get past those two points. Golf is a lot classier.
-
I did. As well as the FR. I really wanted to like it, as i really liked our mk1 leon, I just could not get on with the blind spots caused by the front quarterlight windows, or the rear 3 quarter vision. Im also not a big fan of the round looks i much prefer the mk1 leon we use to have on looks. I also considered the Skoda octavia vRS, and Audi A3 S-line.

would you want to remap a brand new car though? some here have, but most are waiting either for the engine to be really run in properly (up to 10k miles i've heard) and others are waiting for warranty to expire (e.g. me)
agree with the other post, re: the Golf GTI name. call me shallow, but the Golf GTI is the stuff of my boyhood dreams when I was growing up. I loved the red Mk2 GTI 16v my uncle had. "GTD170" just doesn't cut it.

One will like to own a Fez, Lambo, Rolls Royce etc.... At a more affordable level a mini cooper s or GTI. Don't think any diesel will make it into anyone dream car yet!

The V10 R8 diesel comes close!

I think this simplifies it?
> Miles = GTD
< Miles = GTI
or
< Money = GTD
> Money = GTI
but then again
< Performance = GTD
> Performance = GTI
looks
GTI =approx= GTD
price
GTI =approx= GTD
just plain crazy = R
-
I haven't read all the pages but I thought I would stick up for the GTD.
I have one and I love it.
In the real world, the 2 cars are pretty much the same I would say. It is only when you get the GTI going that it is a bit faster. If you aren't one for thrashing your car at every opportunity I would say get a GTD. It can cover ground every bit as fast as the GTI until the 2 cars are pushed towards their limits.
Looks are pretty much identical - just the wheels, red grill and exhausts are different. (Some have said they prefer the back of my GTD to the GTI on this forum).
-
Thanks for that , yes I agree it does look better at the back , i'm not sold on the pipes on the new GTI but still both cracking cars though!! I am on the verge of doing a deal but the ball is there court? I have offerd them 25,000 for a GTD fully loaded but its white? The car is 28,500 at the moment and they cant shift it ??? thanks Steve
-
Whats wrong with white?
-
Bloody muder to keep clean Alan , nightmare?? My ed30 is going now be sad to lose her in way??? One way or another it will be the GTD or GTI ????
-
Its white, Its the in colour now but later...., and its a pig to keep unmarked.
White will put alot of normal people off, (not talking enthusiasts here)
Fully loaded will also put alot of normal people off, Its why if you spec a car up on an order they often ask for a bigger deposit then they would for a standard model as they take the risk you may cancel and it will be harder for them to shift it.

If I'd had a Gti in the past, I'd probably have ordered the GTD 170 - kind of the best of both worlds. Haven't had a Gti and, at 43 years old, I found myself wanting to put that right - years ago, my wife had a 100BHP Tdi and we both loved it so I imagine that the 170 Mark VI is fantastic - but maybe it's my age, just that I fancy a 'cool' and out and out fun car - Gti it is....
Enjoy in good health, whatever you do.

Bloody muder to keep clean Alan , nightmare??
Try having a black car then :D its murder !
-
Try silver... Takes about six months before it even starts to look dirty! :afro:

I had a silver MK4 before the black MK5 and it was always clean :D
-
Ive also had 2 black mk5 gti's , silver is the fastest hahah white even quicker????
-
Thanks for that , yes I agree it does look better at the back , i'm not sold on the pipes on the new GTI but still both cracking cars though!! I am on the verge of doing a deal but the ball is there court? I have offerd them 25,000 for a GTD fully loaded but its white? The car is 28,500 at the moment and they cant shift it ??? thanks Steve
Good luck, let us know how you get on with the price you've offered.
-
keep your ed30 - send it to revo
imo looks better than the mk6 and certainly alot quicker than the gti/gtd and after the revo treatment quicker than the 'R'
but i like quick cars, not just the badge to impress the neighbours...
-
I had a silver MK4 before the black MK5 and it was always looked clean :D
Fixed that for you, Alan... :afro:
-
My head is in a right bloody tiz ??? Which one to get GTI mk6 or the GTD ?? The GTD i can have now its in the showroom!! GTI is build week9 livin in hope??
-
What spec gti gti do you have on order?
I work for VW and bought myself a gtd manual, absolutley love the car with revo its now a really quick car.
-
DSG , 18'' monzas silver lux winter pack!! Cant make my mind up???
-
Steve im sure everyone has tried to help you with advice. It driving pleasure is at the top of your list it has to be the GTI as the handling is far superior due to a lighter engine. Diesels are nose heavy. Still the GTD is a good car.
-
DSG , 18'' monzas silver lux winter pack!! Cant make my mind up???
How much have you got that spec for?
You could get:
A 5 door dsg
Relfex silver
Monza shadows
Sat nav
Leather
Parking sensors
59 plate 6500 miles for £27,500
-
I agree captain, its been great feedabck on this thread, What i'm gonna do is take it for another test drive ASAP. The GTD has far more spec on it sat nav, ACC , DSG, Dynaudio, tinted windows, winter pack , lux pack, they have knocked off 2500 off the price which aint bad? I did say 25,000 got a deal!! DSG & deisle has got be good combination??

Right I would be buying that car straight away!
Getting £2500 off any gti or gtd now is pretty much unheard of I know if you dont buy it then I have a customer who would pay list for it! Which dealer is that car at?
Lee
-
not telling you !! hahaha
-
DSG & deisle [sic] has got be good combination??
DSG helps on a sporty diesel, because the gearbox short-shifts, keeping the revs in that lovely torquey powerband.
I tried a MKVI 140bhp TDi DSG few months back - makes it deceptively quick in "real world" terms... Just out of puff a bit early compared to a petrol.
-
Just spoke to her actually silly bint has bought her self a a3 black edition
-

Trying to... can't... under... stand??? diesel... automatic...... sporty??!!
Buy the GTD. It's got lots more kit which you'll enjoy in just a few days time and driving around a city you'll notice the dynaudio and extra torque more than the red stripes on the grille and the extra 40hp. You'll have to do something about the naff standard 17" wheels though...
-

I know, I know... contradiction!
Seriously though, diesel DSG does work.

I ordered A GTI a few days before the New Year. The price shocked me. Pearl black , Upgraded stereo ,Dynaudio speakers ,Xenon lights and just added folding wing mirrors Monza Shadows , forgot about them
Currently driving a Mitsubishi Outlander 4 X 4 which funny enough has the VW diesel engine ,its a good car and has everything you could ever imagine and more which was not much more than my GTI will cost. Before that it was an Audi A3 sport diesel. Now I want to go back to driving dynamics which I remember from my mark 2 GTI a very long time ago. Have been told April suppose I will need to wait and see.
-
Now I want to go back to driving dynamics which I remember from my mark 2 GTI a very long time ago.
IMO you won't get that in a modern car. Too much weight and electronic assistance.
-
I have just been told there is a 170 gtd in the show room ready to sell, but i have a Mk6 GTi on order build week 9 . Not sure which to buy now??
What are the pro's & cons of these 2 cars? I have driven a 140 jetta the new one and was impressed with the engine?? :undecided:
I currently have an ED30 58 plate ???
I'm wondering why you would be thinking of buying a GTI or GTD if you know nothing about them ? Mind you, if you did know then you wouldnt ask such a stupid question.

I know nothing about iPhones and blackberry's so asked the opinion of those that do. Yes, I could have gone to the shop and played with them but as I'm not technical all that would have done is tell me what they look like and how they feel. If the OP is equally untechnical with cars as I am phones, what's wrong with him asking for opinions?
This site is getting more and more elitest and snooty.

It's fine. It's not noticably quiet or loud. It just trundles along nicely. There may be a slight increase in noise due to the 19 inch tyres but it is not a factor at all. I have the Dynaudio pumping most of the time anyway.
I am just a manual, I considered DSG but didn't go for it in the end.
There is actually quite a nice note while under acceleration and my mates were very impressed. They thought it sounded quite like a petrol while inside the car.

Thats the way I am, it just all comes flooding out when I see stupid questions asking whats better a GTD or a GTI, I mean come on ffs, it's almost as stupid as the GTD is faster than the GTI one. If you seriously dont know whats the best between a GTD and a GTI then I feel for you. You seriously want an answer to your question then GTI ffs.
-

The difference is, a fone can be free with a few quid a month contract. Why the f**k would you think of spending well over £20,000+ on cars you know sh!t all about ?
So let me get this right, bloke one day sees a car he likes, oh that looks nice wonder what it is. Oh its a GTD. Trip to the dealers, oh there's a GTI, that looks nice too. Oh look they are well over £20k. I wonder what they are like - I'll ask in the gti forum, that way I can have a few strangers give me advice on what car to buy. I wonder whats best, I had better ask the strangers in the gti forum.
My advice ? buy a f**kin Corsa if you dont know.
-

Whats the Point of a public Forum Kev?
Not everyone is a brighter spark as you are obviuosly.
Perhaps maybe sit on your hands without upsetting the innocent.
If you do low mileage = GTi , high mileage or motorway trowling= GTD
Expensive mistake if you buy a GTD and wish'd you hadnt of picked the other as you will be hit big style in the pocket for trade in.
Both Great cars. Tough decision imo
-

I think the OP asked for advice on a GTI forum in the belief there'd be posters with both GTi's and GTD's; people who have owned them for 6 months or so,and are in a good position to offer an informed opinion. That's not an unrealistic assumption, nor request imo.
Why be so unpleasant to him?
-
^^ only Kev knows the answer, in his world.
What he doesnt realise is it does nothing but put off people posting on this Forum.
-
And on any other forum he would have been banned a long time ago.
-
The thing is the word best is subjective. It depends on your location, how and were the car will be used and your own personal priorities.

Hi kev , just to put at ease ,I am going to waite for the GTI my decsion was made this morning after testing the car again, and also haveing ED30 back from repairs. I just cant see myself driving diesel car esp after going for a blast in the ed30 then trying GTD!! But I will say the GTD is a fantastic car 10 times better than the mk5 tdi . So build week 9 it is ???? Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed on this thread it help me a great deal cheers guys Steve30
Kev if you do bad things mate or diss people , it always comes back to bite you in your arse!! (KARMA) I love my GTI that's why i am on my 5th mk5 motor!! Sometimes peoeple have dilema's & decsions to make which can be difficult! That doesnt make people stupid!! Enjoy your world of VW KEV :nerd:

I am going to waite for the GTI

Well said steve

VW Kev has a really rubbish spec. 3 door manual, what's the point? 3 door manual cars are now the preserve of old folks on council estates. The world has turned.

Errrrr.....nah.
I agree that many things kev says are just silly, but that was an equally silly thing to say.
I ordered 3 door cos I like the looks better than a 5 door and I only have passengers in the back about ywice a year. I ordered manual cos both me and the gf dont like automatic, and I can see the DSG being very expensive down the line (prolly just after the warranty runs out would be my luck )
All in all, its silly to make sweeping statements about what someone chooses when you dont know the circumstances.
And to really put the cat amongst the pigeons....I`ve ordered a GTD and I`m proud of it too.
-
Dan, thats a brilliant car you have ordered, mine is 3 door's as well. I just dont like 4 door gti's they look a bit fumpy IMO. I'm the same as you just me and the Mrs, i very rarly would i have 2 people in the car. Besides it looks more like a sports car in 3 door's!! :smug:
-
Cheers fella, gets built next week, I know I`m pushing my luck, but hoping it gets delivered sometime in 3rd week of Feb cos I`m off work

I really cannot grasp what you are on about....
Maybe your world has turned while the rest of the (design)world is still doing its utmost to built 4/5 door cars looking like 2/3 door cars...
By the way I have ordered a 5 door GTI...we are not allowed 2 (3) door cars in our company...the looks are a little less but I find it quite comfortable in many occasions.....each person has its own best reasons for deciding...
For the manual ...how on earth do you associate that with old folks...at least 75 percent of the older people want an "automatic".....I am very pleased myself that DSG is doing sublime things like speed and comfort ...but for sporty driving and in control nothing beats the manuals....Basta..

Couldn't agree more, when I first joined here I remember posting a simple question in the off topic section. I was absolutely torn to bits because the question had been asked before. Now talking of Karma, this is it coming around, its MY turn. Once I feel its balanced itself out a bit, I may be a little nicer.

Hi Steve
So glad you decided on the GTI over the GTD in the end, no doubt the GTD is excellent for a diesel
but I think you would probably have thought forever more what if? everytime a GTI shot passed you the green eyed monster would pop up his head.
Good luck let's hope your car stays at build week 9.
All the best
Gizzy

Hi Phil, I like red , although never seen an Ed30 in red yet , just got back from portsmouth and pulled up next to a black one in service station, I said to this guy mines better than yours mate , he said why is that then????
Silver is much quicker , he just gave me a very wry smile :smug: enjoy Steve
I used to have red Type R about 5 years ago love that car around town, but when it came to MW driving , so noisy and tiring to drive, but a fantatic gear box in them.

You're all so wrong!
Black makes a car so much faster that a black GTD becomes faster
than a GTI
only joking Kev, stand down bud.

Kev is in denial that black has been scientifically proven to be the fastest colour.

the 100m sprint doesn't count

Deep blue pearl was definitely the fastest Mk5 colour  On the Mk6 it's Rising blue - gives you an extra 60hp...
-
Kev is in denial that black has been scientifically proven to be the fastest colour.
what If I paint black go faster stripes ?
-
You would only get a small percentage with go faster stripes...it's a cumulative effect, more black = more speed.

So if tiger woods borrowed my black golf with black leather interior on Black monzas it would be rapid Vienna

Well then there isnt a Veyron that could beat it....
...erm, unless its a black Veyron...with black wheels...with black interior...driven by Lewis Hamilton.

Who??
Not me
My GTI beating black GTD is due in about three or four weeks - being built this week
-
Mine's black which is the the quickest and has the faster 17" wheels and manual which will always beat an Auto.
(Cloth as well which is lighter).
And I bet the xenons are heavier than the standard.....
And the ACC will be quicker........
Anyone non modded faster????
No abuse please.
