hi im new to vw's really i had a mk3 but the cambelt snapped 6 month ago an its still on my drive today...
anyway i got a saxo vtr then converted it to a vts, but now i want to get rid and get a mk2 gti but ive been looking at reviews solid 4 days and cant figure out which is best (obviously this is down to personal preference) but do some years/models have extras? different bodywork? better preformance? easier to live with etc, so any guideance and advice would be very helpfull, because now im just looking and looking and not coming up with a conclusion, its frying my brain. cheers

The million dollar question.... OK the £1500 question (what you can pay for a nice MK2).
Been asked a load of times.
The general consensus was 8v for a daily traffic beater.
Oh and can't you get the MK3 repaired? What engine is it? I'm wondering if it's a non-interference engine.

Why, when 16vs are better in every way?
(worm can open)

my mk3 keeps stalling when I come to a standstill. Please help!
my mk4 windows have dropped into the door. Please help!
when I buy a new car, what should I look for?
how do I measure offset?
-
Fastest = Early Small Bumper 16v
Most desribale = Oak Green Big Bumper 16v
Easiest to look after = All of them
Most economic = 88 Onwards Digifant 8v
Hope that helps!

Why did the belt snap? if it was through neglect because you didnt have the cash to get it changed or just couldnt be arsed then you stand no chance of looking after a 16v so id get the 8v it will be cheaper to fix.

If it's not very good, can I have it to play conkers with, please? I'll collect .
As for which Golf2. Buy any 90-spec Golf2 in good body condition, buy a 16V Golf3 in poor body condition and then fit the ABF code motor (2.0 16V) to the Golf2.
Excellent performance AND good economy when you're not thrashing it. Oh and more civilised running, too.
You need to create hybrid vigor to get the best out of these cars.
-
If it's for daily duties, I would buy the best condition, most looked after car that I could afford regardless of what engine or how many doors it has.
We have to remember that the youngest cars are nearing 20 years old, so it's a case of buying the best of what is still left unless you are prepared to put the work and money into one to prolong its life.
-
i only had the mk3 3 weeks when the belt snapped and its immaculate in every other way. its a 1.8
-
im a mechanic by the way so maintence etc isnt a worry.
-
your a mechanic, yet havent found a spare few hours to sort the mk3 in 6 months??? Fail

You reckon? It seems white is the most desirable at the moment!

Hey Reasty, where in Hants are you?

Farnborough

8v digi would be my choice.

I've heard this from somewhere before, even with small bumper digi's are quicker than their big bumper brothers?
Mates had a few big bumpers, a couple of which were digi's. They were quick, but didn't have an urgency about them, as in, throttle response etc. But then after that he bought an 89' digi with 188,000 miles that felt "rapid!!" ( tongue: ) and quicker than all the other tidy, properly set up, big bumpers that he previously owned before.
We thought it must of been a cam in there, or a 2 litre bottom end or something but later found out it there wasn't, and in fact it was stock and only put out 109 at the fly on the rollers...
Consequently I bought a low mileage 89' digi and it too has got that urgency as well...
Is it the injectors?
Can anybody explain this?
Cheers

Might be barking up the wrong tree but big bumper cars are heavier so that could be a factor.
-
The earlier cars are a fair bit lighter so the power to weight ratio is improved a bit. The K-Jey cars (Early 8v and all 16v) also have better throttle response at the expensive of economy.

If you already have a Mk3 on your drive, and it can be sat there for spare parts, it
might be better to get a Mk3 16V if you can find a decent one.
A Mk2 is a more fun car though.
-
how are the earlier cars lighter though, apart from a bumper change?
-
Safety! door beams etc. Alot change in the life of the mk2 with regards to safty equipment on cars.

You'd better point out the door bars in any of the Golf2s, cos I'm sure as hell they ain't in my 88F Syncro.
Maybe more soundproofing in the later cars and a little more kit, but not a huge amount.
-
I thought the early ones with quarter light didn't but the later ones did.
-
mine is 88F with no safety bars in the doors and no quarter lights either.
It also has no PAS that sucks a couple of horses of your engine, all the crank drives is the alternator off the vee belt.
What about the bigger wheels on the newer mk2s, mine still has the 185/60/14s smaller the better for acceleration. bigger wheels and tyres give a higher top end.
5 door models will be slightly heavier too.
-
My mistake.
-
I've got a 92J Digi with a side impact bar in each of the front doors. I heard they were fitted to 91 models onwards?
Also, there's some grey sand-filled plastic stuff under the usual sound proofing in the footwells, which is fairly heavy (perhaps about a kilo per pack, and there are two packs per footwell). The same stuff is used in the Mk3.
-
My valver is a early 90 on a G plate and dosnt have any of that saftey crap or power steering and it goes like stink!

Same as, but it isnt standard. A mate of mine took me out in an early gti but I dunno if it was a valver or not, it was very smooth but it didnt really feel that quick. Was a nice pale green colour with the quarter lights. Wish I had been into my golfs back then cus it only had like 30k on it and was completely standard. He only wanted £800 quid n'all (He wasnt the smartest lad...bless)

So i was right, i thought they fitted them towards the end of its life due to legistaion maybe :undecided:
