Title: Clocks dont work.........
Post by: LazyLunatic on 05 January 2010, 13:54
Ok i got my clocks plugged in and they light up, also the indicator tell tales work and the main beam light works, also the warning lights work (handbrake, charge, oil, coolant)

Now the two displays, mileage and time, dont work nor do the four dials.

everything else works fine. although also to note, the oil and coolant lights stay on permanently, even when the engine is on.

speedo wiring is plugged into the gearbox and tacho is wired to ecu; so it makes me think thats its some sort of bad earth is missing connection......

i got a pdf with a wiring diagram, its quite good but i cant really see the problem. any help would be much appreciated! i can email the diagram if need be.

thanks! :)

yeah i got that and i looked over the earths but cant see what i have missed. i've only messed with the engine bay wiring and i cant see how the clocks earth through the engine bay wiring. mayb im not understanding the diagrams correct.

sounds liek the main live has gone, have you checked the dash fuse?

yeah checked fuses and fusebox wiring and nothing has gone or not connected. worked fine before i took my engine and then ever since it been like i described in the first post... will double check fuses again, but i have looked over them a lot.

i thought it might be something to with the oil pressure switch, as it aint wired in yet (at least i dont think it has??)

that wont make a difference if connected or not, these operate just like an on/off switch anyway

ahhh, then im out of ideas..... is there anything in the engine bay wiring that might have affected it you reckon? would it be worth trying a set of gti clocks out, as mine doesnt have a mfa?

thanks for your help :afro:

buggered if i can think of anything!  worth checkign all the jumper blocks above the fusebox, one o those may have popped out?  if you look up under the dash you'll see a load of 4 pin jumpery things with single wires going into them, im thinking maybe you've pulled a wire out here...

nothing wrong there..... i wonder if i have wired the right wire to the ecu for the tacho....

...i wired in a green and blue wire. could it be another wire maybe?

Use the wiring diagram and a multimeter and check every wire at the dash goes where it says it should. Work methodically from left to right on the diagram starting at T28/3 which should go to Terminal 31, (Chassis ground) and ending at T28/2 which should go to your coolant shortage switch.

^ guy on my local forum ^

going to give this a go. i guess all the spare wiring in the bay must be the problem/solution!

heres what i wrote while i was sat in my car just after i had done it.

F**KING F**K YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have the dash working!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote down all the colors of the spare wires and then looked through the wiring diagrams for them. it was a blue/white wire which originally came out of the ECU and went to a junction box then it split, one to radio and one to fusebox. the one that went to the fusebox came out and went to the dash; so i thought this one might be the problem. Also when i was driving i could here the speed through the speakers..... remember it split at the junction box and one went to the radio.

I earthed it in the bay and it worked!

next problem - gears!

edited due to over excitement and stupid things wrote lol

so yeah, one of the many unused wires in the bay just needed to be earthed. i thought when i found it on the diagram, "where is it meant to go if i dont have the old ecu and thats where it used to go...."

just needed to sit down and go over the diagrams in depth

blue/white is usually speedo sense, bit strange that it fixed it? oh well, as lonmg as your speedo works who cares

wasnt that blue/white wire. i did see another on the diagram i think. this strange yes. on the diagram it went from the ecu through a junction box and split, one to radio and one to dash. that was it, no more info on it. thought i'd earth it and there you go! although now i can see how much fuel im using, which is annoying! lol
