I mentioned before Xmas a work colleague who waited ages to get hold of a Scirocco.
If the wait wasn't bad enough when Sheila eventually went to collect it a couple of weeks before Santa came a-calling,all was going fine until she went to hand over her debit card. This is when the salesman said bye bye and hadn't her over to a 'finance manager'.
She said she mentally did the sums in her head and found what she was being asked for [before the invoice was put on the table] was £900 more than she was expecting. You'll know what's coming next [Supaguard, GAP insurance and tyre insurance] but when Sheila said she wasn't prepared to pay this not insignificant premium the 'finance manager' then went in to quite a heated discusion saying how imperative the 'extras' were. What finally took the gloss off the first drive of her new car was the parting shot from the dealership with something along the lines of how much less the car will be worth as soon as she drove away.
Now we all know this but as a [not so] cheap dig to get her to buy GAP insurance [and the rest] to me is bit of a p**s take and as I said, took any positive feelings way from the day.
I just hope when mine eventually turns up I'm not treat to anything similar ... though I fancy I may have something to say to the Dealer Principal if my experience is similarlly soured.
Happy New Year!

Desperate dealers/salesmen eager to offload high-profit products. They make good money out of things like GAP insurance, Supaguard and servicing. Hope she didn't pay.
Speaking of servicing, I wonder how much that's going to go up this year?

VW dealers  nothing suprises me about them

Must say I had the opposite experience with my dealer. I went with figures for GAP insurance expecting the hard sell just before I picked my car up.
During signing the documents I jokingly said, "Is this the point you sell me the GAP and paint treatment". He just laughed and said "I wouldn't waste my time"

thats a lot to pay for gap but as someone who has had 2 cars stolen
i think GAP is a must have! you can buy it online for £250ish

£130 ish if you look in the right places

Thanks for letting us now about this experience.

Quite often the margin on GAP, supagaurd etc and the actual finance is a lot more than the money they make of the actual car. Certainly the salemans commision is.

For £300 GAP insurance (thats how much it was on my MK5) when buying a car of reasonable value isn't actually that bad, in fact, its pretty good I think.

I only got asked about GAP and paint protection as i collected the car - i asked the salesguy if he could do GAP for £104 (RTI Gap), the best i found online, to which he politely said No
If you are leasing a car, then the likes of supaguard, whilst a money earner for the dealership admittedly, might save you some hassle when handing the car back. If you're not going to wash n wax regularly then the likes of supaguard is OK for the lazy leasers, helping to keep some of the wear n tear less visible. But do it yourself for £20 rather than pay £300.
My dealer was OK throughout the whole experience, delivering the car as promised ahead of the VAT rise. Its the scare stories of lead times on the internet that had me ringing the dealer and VWCS every other week to check progress - this made no difference to my delivery timescales.

Rolling the extras into the finance package is a bit naughty, but they probably get away with it 6 times out of 10.
I got the hard sell to take the car on finance, despite the fact that I made it clear that i'd be paying cash. The finance guy actually tried to convince me to 'keep my money in the bank to earn interest' despite the fact that the package he was proposing would have seen me paying nearly £2k over 3 years in interest. C*ck.
Other than that it was a pain-free and positive buying experience, the best i've had from any dealer.
They pressed me hard to to take the GAP insurance at £390. I said no, then looked on the internet for a better price (£190). The VW finance guy then offered me his policy for £190, which I took.
Makes sense at that price IMO.
