I'm putting all season tyres on next.
Might try Vredestein Quatrac's.
-
I've got Avon ZZ3's all round and I've not had many issues in the Scottish snow.
-
In their defense, Goodyear do acknowledge that for winter driving the tyre only gets one star out of five.

Exactly, mine were useless in the snow last year :(
-
I've done more shoveling than driving with those one star summer lightweights on the front.
The most dangerous tyres I've ever used. A curse on Evo and their sunshine tyre test.
All season tyres next for sure.
-
I have to agree very poor in the winter F1's !! Overated tyre in my view???

be the 1st good thing that you ever posted nosher.
I have those, the only thing that'll get you home in a snow flurry would be some nice snow chains around your 18"monza's
-
ironically, had the Goodyears on my Scooby. Fantastic actually.
Not got them on my GTI.
Dan
-
the Assymetrics or the old GSD3's?
GSD3's were next to useless
New Assy's are much improved :afro:

Exactly - they are classed as a 'summer tyre' so what do you expect when the temperatures drop
I reckon you're just a sh!t driver Egbert

Anyone else got any other suggestions? I was thinking the same thing about the Eagle F1's.
What are the best all weather tyres out there?
-
how much tread you got left on the tyres?
I have F1 Asys. Fronts are 3 months old. Rears are bit too worn for these conditions.
Handling is interesting to say the least at the moment, rear end being very lively!
Any normal tyre will be crap in Ice and Snow. You just have to drive according to the conditions.
-
Always had Continental Sport Contacts (latest iteration is "3") on mine - VWFS choice, not mine.
They seem pretty good.
Always understood that Michelin made the best tyres tho?
-
I've driven all sorts of vehicles in the snow. The GTI was not too bad with the oem Bridgestones. But these Goodyear horrors are just the pits.
-
Falken FK452's are also shyte in the snow. I hate to say it but I had a lot less problems last winter in the snow with the Dunlop Sportmax :embarassed:
That said I think the GTI is just generally poor in this sort of weather, been rocking the fiancee's 1.2 polo the last couple of days and the thing is like a sherpa.
-
I think its a bit silly to choose your tyre for just 4 days of the year when we have snow/ice. Why not either buy a set of snow tyres or buy some snow chains?
Anyway I have no issues with the F1 in these conditions, not less than any other tyre I've had on other vehicles.
The GSD3's are simply awesome in the wet - which quite frankly is 80% of weather we get in the UK.

Overrated tyre's the F1's???? Dont last long crap in the winter!!
-
People are specifying xenon lights to make driving safer at night, fair enough. But for a lot of the year our nightime temperatures are below 6C. Goodyear do not advise the use of the F1 summer tyre below 6C and, as was posted here, it drops to a one star out of five in the cold.
It makes sense to me to fit all season tyres that can cope with cold nights right through the year and cold days in winter. Not to mention grip in snow.
The F1's are outside of their design envelope for much of the time in the UK
-
unless you have winter tyres everything else is going to be rubbish in this weather, ive got vredestien sessantas on mine great in wet or dry, crap on ice :undecided:
-
Overated tyre in my view???
Ermmmmm no ! They are awesome tyres.

Only if you drive in temperatures above 6C. Below that Goodyear say you should NOT USE the F1's because they are dangerous. So every night in Autumn, Winter and Spring and most Winter days too you are risking your life with the Goodyears.
All season is the way to go. (Those Sessantas mentioned are summer tyres, it's the Quatrac's that are all season)
-
I beg to differ though, I only got about a months use out my Assys in August so wont comment on them but my GSD3s where brilliant in anything other than ice and snow. I agree in what your saying that THEY say below 6 they dont work well, but I can only go on what I experienced and I never had any problems.
-
To be fair most summer tyres are crap in this weather, just adjust you'r driving to the conditions.Besty thing to do if you have the spare cash & room to store them would be to get 4 vw steel wheels & some snow tyres.
-
Ok now im confused. I was gonna get some F'1s but as they are only classed as a summer tyre then they are out of the question as I live in England and we don’t really have a summer. So all season it is, as people have been mentioning the Vredestein Quatrac I thought I would look them up and look what I found:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vredestein/Quatrac-3.htm
So ok people same old lame question that always gets asked, what tyres should I go for? I have a Mrk 5 GTI DSG with the regular 17's on there.
-
Id suggest the F1s.
Had GSD3s (older F1s) on the 17s and now have Assyms (newer F1s) on the 18s and both are fine, only problems I have had are when its snowy / icey but ALL normal tyres are like that. I personally wouldnt pay too much attention to this summer tyres stuff. I've never had problems with them.
Do a search as there have a been a million and one threads on this. Its between the F1s or the Michelin PS2s.

Vredesteins do an asymetric style awell and not the ones you posted.
I love mine tbh, and for 90% of the time they are fine, but as said snow weather is freak especially for me down the deep saaarrrfff
-
The F1s are still the best money can buy imo they are unbeatable in the dry and great in the wet, very predictable, they are not the best on snow ice ect, but i certainly wouldnt leave them on the shelf for this reason. Ive had them on every car ive owned with no problems, Those and the continentals are my tyres of choice.
-
I keep saying (opions are like arse holes we all have one but I prefer my own one!!)F1's are overated on this forum PS2's are my next tyre!!
-
I've also heard nothing but good things from the PS2s.
-

Not what ive heard
Soz couldnt resist
-
Had PS2s on my S4 and well, they were OK.......overpriced for what they are imho. The Audi boys over on RS246.com loved them and recommended as such.
Personally, I've always had GSD3s and Toyo T1r & s......
