Title: Nearly about to buy a GTI! NEW PICS PAGE 5**
Post by: funkythumbs42 on 06 December 2009, 16:51
I am about to buy a Mk5 3-dr Gti in black, 60k on the clock with cloth interior from a local dealer.

I really love the car but after a test drive there are a few minor gremlins.

- squeak when opening drivers side door
- squeak\rattle from somewhere in the car when going over a speed bump
- a little judder through steering wheel when breaking hard between 50-70

The dealer has advised these will be fixed if i were to take the car and it will also been serviced including timing belts and tensioners etc with 6 month tax and a full tank of petrol.  The car is up for 10,995 ive haggled and the dealer would not go lower factoring in the service including the belts.

Id be trading in a mk4 golf tdi pd 100 match with 126k on the clock which they would give me 2.5 k for.

The main draw is its a black 3door with 18inch rims and really is spotless inside and out. It also an ex rental car so has been serviced every 10k with a full service history.

What are your thoughts?

Greg

- squeak when opening drivers side door --------------  Spray hinges with Wd40
- squeak\rattle from somewhere in the car when going over a speed bump---------- Back seat base i expect.
- a little judder through steering wheel when breaking hard between 50-70--------- Get the Wheel Balancing checked

Enjoy

re the braked the car has been sitting for 3 weeks or so so though the discs pads may have been a wee bit dirty..

ive read loads about the squeaky back seat as well hopefully its just that!!

What are your thought on the price?

Price is good as long as you have proof done on these being serviced at 40k.

Cambelt, cambelt tensioner, waterpump maintanance . DSG service (if its DSG of course). These should have been serviced already at 60k. If it hasnt get them to do that as part of the sale.
Brake fluid service , should have been done at least once. Find out when the next change is due.

Make sure car is on Time and Distance schedule and Not Long life servicing .

If its a Vw dealership, have a look on the VW database for all the above History.

If its been done, the Congrats and enjoy.Price is what id expect to pay at a dealership.

car is non-dsg...il check the service history when i go back on tuesday.

Other than that the dealer is doing the belts, water pump etc as part of the service and mot if i were to get the car.

I really just want to make sure those to squeaks are gone before i sign the dotted line and drive the car away!! :-)

Am I being stupid or have you not included the year it was registered?

Without it would be hard to judge the value.

its a local independant garage, they are around 30 miles away from myself so dont know to much about them unfortunately.

Seems like an OK price, although it depends how confident you are with the dealer as from experience, once they have your money the warranty can be more hassle than its worth.

Does the car have any other extras? cd changer, armrest, xenons etc?

Sam

the car has centre armrest, highline computer, 18" monzas just refurbed.

Has a standard head unit but im looking to replace this an rns 510 if i go ahead, although remap comes first ;-)

Fantastic car, but... think very hard about the 3 door as I've had loads of problems with the seat  tilt\slide memory thing (i.e when tilting it slides forwards and then back to where it was). Major pain if you need frequent access to the back (i.e kids).

But... love the car, and for me this is the first time I've ever bought another example of the same car (just got a mk6 gti on order) as in the past always got something different.
100% totally recomend GTI mk5. In fact I was trying to find another mk5 in 5 door but couldn't get the right spec hence opted for a new mk6, but would have been totally happy with a mk5 again!

Recomend getting cruse control (as read that you can actually get it retrofitted for about the £200 mark).

Have you thought about an AA\RAC inspection as it's an indi gararge?

not really a problem for me as im single with no kids so its very rare i have more than 1 other person in the car :-D  just the odd occassion giving lifts to mates etc.

was funny right after test driving the gti i went and had a drive in my mates £500 proton satria 1.3 - NOW THAT WAS AN EXPEREINCE TO BEHOLD.

I'm sorry but ex-rental?

I don't care if it's from a VW dealer I wouldn't touch that with barge pole.

True, any car could have been, but an ex-rental WILL HAVE BEEN!

Think about it, if you rent a car for a short term period, will you look after it?

If you buy an expensive car, will you look after it?

Simples

Post by: Primus84 on 07 December 2009, 18:33
How long will you keep it for? Have you considered a warranty from somewhere like warrantydirect?

All I know is if I'd hired a GTI for a short while I'd thrash the arse out of it, mind I do sometimes do that with mine, but I'd do it ALL THE TIME with a rental.
Title: Re: Nearly about to buy a GTI! What you think?
Post by: funkythumbs42 on 07 December 2009, 18:37
the car has had 1 owner for 60k and its a 55 reg and comes with a 1 year warranty

i plan on keeping the car for around 3 years

The warranty from an indy will most likely be pants - check it carefully!

1 "owner" but how many rentals?!
Title: Re: Nearly about to buy a GTI! What you think?
Post by: jaydubveedub on 07 December 2009, 19:11
I think what he's saying is that it's been owned by a leasing company, so has probably had only one main driver from new.

It's true to say that if it's a GTI it's probably been driven hard, but even a car which has been someone's pride and joy can just go pop one day for no reason.

My GTI was a one owner, although it was a Lloyds TSB lease car. It has the fully documented history and was in good condition. It's probably not been loved as much as some, but if it breaks then i'll pay for someone to fix it?

Bottom line, if you like the car and it feels right then go for it.

Definately consider Warranty Direct, warranties from independent dealers are usually worthless.

My Bad, If the price can be pushed down to £10k would be a reasonable buy, there are stacks on Pistonheads for around that though, you may not get a warranty but you can get a well cherished car, mine will probably be joining them soon for around that mark...

You could say the same for any second hand car. It could have been used by a teenage son or a less caring spouse.

Lease cars are usually less cared for by the driver, but finding a 1 owner car with 60k with fsh is better than most.

- 6 cd changer
- dual climate control
- folding mirrors
- rear parking sensors

Early models didnt come with an arial on the roof and just use the rear heater element as the arial. IMO I think they look better and much cleaner without the arial :)
