Title: Negative attention on the road
Post by: Spartacus on 27 November 2009, 17:04
Only had my GTi for 3 weeks and already clocked up 1000 miles. Very, very impressed with it so far.

Have noticed a trend from other cars who tailgate inches from my bumper. I don't know if they are wanting a closer look or are challenging for a scrap.

Not the usual bored photocopier rep in his diesel Audi / BMW either. All sorts, delivery vans, Smart cars, houewives on school run, old men in Lagunas.

I had a Clio 182 when they first came out and the same thing happened then.

Anybody else experienced this ?

No but did have a mk5 gti chasing me up the A19 the other day. I was doing about 100-110mph and pulled across to the inside lane but he didn't want to pass. He just wanted to stay behind me.

What car did you have before? Reason I ask is it's just possible the rear window is shallower/bottom edge is higher up on the GTI giving the impression of cars behind being closer than they were before. Or maybe it's psychological because you have a new car. Or maybe I am talking poo again...

No did consider that so good question.

Previous car was MarkV Golf GT TDi 4 Motion which was totally ignored as is my other current car which is an ML420.

I was going to ask what colour it was and maybe that was the reason but i see its black so its not like a shouting white or red. No idea why unless the speedos about as acurate as the mk5 one in which case your probably doing well below the speed limit and that maybe why.

Pull over, let them past.

Then follow them with all of your lights on, fogs as well.
Annoying as hell.
(Not too close of course that would be bad manners and illegal.)

They see the badge and try it on.

If they get silly then back out - it ain't worth it.

I had a c0ck in a Mitsi Evo Lancer tonight driving from Devon to Dorset, I was behind a Scirocco and he obviously fancied his chances with us both. He did a stupid overtake on me and then tried it on with the roc but couldn't get past. I stayed with him for twenty miles before I couldn't keep up with him as we hit a bit of dual carraigeway.

Before you all feel dismayed, I was in my vito van!

People tailgating is a major annoyance, as is people going too slow, which is ironic, as then I become a pseudo tailgater.

I don't know if people would be able to see the gti badge from a distance and from the rear, the GTI isn't that different to most other Golfs to the un-trained eye.

The split exhaust pipes will differentiate all GTIs... from the common variant... ahem

Negative attention on the road? Don't experience it! more like zero attention except from fellow golf driver!
That's the whole point of the GTI. This is a 200bhp+ golf made a whole lot better visually by some 'subtle' exterior changes. Without the badge, most environmentalist or ladies wouldn't able to tell the difference esp they now also do a GTD.
If I want attention and street race, I will buy a green Focus RS rather than a carbon grey GTI.

I think a red GTI will stimulate aggression or some unwanted interest from other road user!

99.9% of Mk V & Mk VI Golfs on the road over here are TDIs. I get admiring glances from the drivers, but given that they're only packing 110-140hp, they don't even think about taunting me. I ride supreme over all the French proletariats

Went to court and lost his licence.

What for saying he was speeding on a forum.

Sounds like there was more to it than that!

It must have been as its not "Sensible" to admit speeding on the internet.

Not sure if its negative or just simple attention, but I get a bit of it too.

Dont know why everyone seems to want to race me though. I of course gladly oblige nearly every time, enjoyed whoring a VW EOS 2.0FSI last night. And even had a Fiesta try it on

MK4 gti's (always fail which is fun) and MK5 GT's

Other than that most people just seem to want me to put my foot down for the noise as they never follow with speed, just arrive behind smiling and nodding

A few posts in this thread is probably the exact reason you are getting negative attention Spartacus.

Would rather have aids than sell the 32 mate but needs must.

Would love a turbo mk4 as a weekend car in a few years

I remember on the Mk6's test drive a 12 year old noob and his mate in a old mk4 gti was inch's off my bumber for ages, then even pulled out into incoming traffic and whyen cutting back in, almost went into the front side of the test drive car! Not sure what it proved - that he was dumb driver?

Also think it depends on where you're driving and if it's rush hour. IMO Manchester is worst with everyone seems highly aggressive - cut you up\ drive through red, way worse than London. On the hand, each time I've been to Leeds or Liverpool, the drivers there seem to be far more chilled out and considerate, just what I've found).

Regarding cars in the current GTI I never seem to have problems, but I've also got a Corsa for a short while, and oddly I've noticed I always seem to get tail gated even in a 30 zone in the corsa, noticed it way way more than the Golf. Even when either car is driven at the same speeds about town or on the motorway.

But...... I know someone who has an R8 who finds they get tailgated by Golf GTI's all the time. I don't understand that, why bother as R8 is way faster than them, and if the numpty's crash into the back of an R8 (a tailgating GTI has no chance of stopping against an R8 doing an emergency stop)  - their insurance bill will cost a mint!
