Everyone wants a Golf R!
but with a price of just under £30k in std form. What else would you consider for less than £30k??
I came across this, faster than the R, better made, RWD, sounds  goes like stink, and will hold its value better!!

What do you think is worth a look over the Golf R???
-
I looked at one of these a few months ago.
It was just the standard M version - with no mods. Cracking looking car - I never actually drove it, so I can't comment on performance.
Its just not big enough or practical enough for me though. The boot isn't that big (especially on that one as it has a sub!) and with my Fiancee having a RWD BMW - we'd BOTH be stuck in the snow instead of getting to work on the hand full of days it snows a year!!
I'm a very keen snowboarder - so 4wd is a big advantage for me. I know its nowhere near as good as a Land Rover or something, but it'll certainly help me get out of the car park, and up the hills etc!
-
Nice car.... but......only a 2 seater, can it really be compared to a Golf R, I am not so sure.
-
As much as i would like an R, it's too much for me!
I like the look of the Z4M, very nice car! Sadly the money i paid for my MKiV R32 from almost new doesn't get you much these days. I'm really not sure what to change to.
Last year (in the heavy snow down south) i got to work in the R, where most others gave up on their journey. Only to realise that one other person managed to make it in, because they lived around the corner. Went back to the R to go home and was stuck! 15 miles away from home!!!!! Had to be dug out in the end, but managed to crawl home :embarassed:

How about...... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1094632.htm
providing you could remove those awful rear lights, they do have quite a road presence and are no way near as common as golfs or earlier scoobies.

Maybe if I lost my sight I could just about stand walking up to this each morning to drive to work.
Seriously, the only other car I'd consider is a GTI.

Nah... don't like Audis. If I did, I'd get an S3. But it looks sh*te, especially in 5-door form.

Are you really bored by any chance?!

It's helping that last hour go that bit quicker for me
I always buy German cars, so it kind of limits me to Audi, VW or BMW. Not a lover of Merc unless it's the F1 pace car!

I took a half day as I had a guy coming round to look at my TV...
Its got a funny coloured patch appearing in the bottom right hand corner, and its extended warranty runs out in about 2 weeks!
Bugger came in 30 mins ago, looked at it for 5 mins, then said it needed a new LCD panel - and lifted it straight out of here.
5-10 working days for a new screen.
I'm currently staring at the wall... as the TV in my bedroom is wall mounted and I don't want to have to take it down!

BMW 335D or i, there giving huge discounts - ask your local.

I know you probably didnt mean literally everyone, but I dont want a Golf R. I don't want the hike in tax, emissions, insurance, running costs, and mostly the huge price involved in buying it. It does look frickin stunning though.

My pal had a grey, de-badged & de-blinged RS4 avant last year and it was the danglies :: subtle, f00kin huge and thanks to a German-spec de-limit did 200mph!
you simply have to hear the rs4!!
It is quite schexxyful

YES YES YES YES YES YES ! Anyone that doesnt like these should be banned from the forum. Did an advance driving course on the Stow circut at Silverstone in one of these and they are just epic.
Only problem is I wouldn't fancy the running costs on them :(

been at work since 6.30 and dont finish til 9, with nothing to do all day :undecided:

Hmmm, RS4. They sound fantastic. Hadn't realised they were so 'affordable' now too. Only thing that puts me off a bit is the potential running costs. I've been offered a well spec'd brand new S4 (330bhp, part leather, B&O speakers, 19" wheels, etc) for £33K. Sensible, quick as the R, uber stealthy, but seems a bit bland. I still prefer the R.
I want to like BMW's, but I just can't.

You mean It's fun owning a modified car that can keep up with a standard rs4. The only thing you would take from an rs4 is the noise ? you talk some amount of sh!te.
-
Z4M - looks nice but totally impractical
Scooby - hideous looks
RS4 - now you're talking! but i'm not a fan of the saloon, i'd go for the Avant. big hot hatch!
335i - looks strangely boring, very 318i - coupe a better option, but then loses in practicality
-
Hah. I'm just totally enchanted by my Golf GTi MkVI. Thrilled to bits. Couldn't be bettered. Everything I want from a car.
I'll leave you guys to your fantasies.
Rolfe.

always good to have fantasies

335i 2009 onwards 4 door m Sport in the met blue (nice car, a little more descrete than the M3, came down to one of them or the GTI (as needed 4 door for the little one). Amazing discounts on offer, noticed you can get a brand new 325i (the uprated 3.0 engine with 0-60 in 6.1) for about £25k, that's not far off the same price as a GTI 5 door and has cruse etc as standard.
Wonder if there's a new 3 series out next year?

Got to be the RS4 (even if 2nd hand) if you're looking for a good car @ the same price of the R

I've just come out of an 07 plate RS4 avant which i've had for the last 2 yrs. A fantastic car in every way BUT the running costs are immense so even though you are correct the RS4 (2-3yrs old) is the same price as the Golf R the golf will be much cheaper to run/ maintain ......
-
My thinking is if you can buy it cash, you can afford the running costs. If you have to use finance then you can't afford to run it without a struggle, Finance + running costs = silly money that could go elsewhere.
-

lol - you don't say! that's like saying that a GTI is nice but pricey, so drop down to a 1.6 or a 1.4 and it'll be cheaper!

How is it? The specs as high in the lower engines as the higher engine models, some more so! The link with the 325i has a much better spec, nicer paint finish, wheels and exact body kit.
You cant spec a 1.6 golf to anywhere near the R model (leather recaros, wheels, body kit etc etc)
-
lol ok Jules. but a car with a smaller engine being cheaper than a car with a bigger engine is hardly rocket science. so you can spec a 320i to be similar to a 325i to a 330i and a 335i. in many ways that is the downfall of the highly specced BMs and also the benefit for lower models. they all looks very similar. i was tempted to get a 320d E92 M Sport once, looked the dogs danglies but would be pretty slow.
-
The more I see other cars interiors, the more the GTI's is actually stunning. The rest I've seen really are poor in comparison.
-
You've got the leather, haven't you? I must say I'm very pleased with the cloth.
I think that says a lot, because I was dead set on leather when I started looking, and I usually think cloth interiors are naff squared. For the Golf to have persuaded me away from leather due to the quality of the cloth says a lot for the interior in general.
Rolfe.

shame the 1 looks ugly, but is this is any good, this would be a serious threat to the R

I've got a taxed, MOTed and insured BMW two seater in the garage.
It's just as quick as my GTI.
But it never comes out of the garage.

At those prices i would say so.... but BMW will be charging a fortune for any extras. Atleast with BMW you know they very rarely bring out a bigger and better version of their M cars, unlike the golf :lipsrsealed:
-
A 135i remapped will destroy an R though and is cheaper to buy now, hell even a standard one would leave it behind!

Well i am quite sure thats why Audi will reserve the ultimate hot hatch title for the new audi rs3. Althought there are unconfirmed rumours BMW will be launching an all out assault with a M1 coupe

*4get that 1st comment im wrong*
Personally instead of an R, Ide buy a FQ330 Evo or something. If insurance was reasonable ide of done it instead of my GTI, cept it'de of been the FQ300

I had a deposit down September for a Golf R as I like the security of 4wd in the winter months but as it won't be available to February/March looked elsewhere and have just done a deal on a FQ330 SST pre-registered dealer stock with Service pack 59 Plate 75 Miles has a list price of over £36500 (Inc Mats & MSP) Purchased for £29500 not as well built as VW but with a list of std equipment that would put the golf in to the high £30K band and performance figures that even the best remap couldn’t get close too makes a very serious alternative to the Golf R although against it is it’s high road fund licence and thirst for super unleaded. Also moved my £500 Deposit to a Scirocco R as we will be needing a second Car replacement next March/April and think it represents better value than the Golf.
