Ive had the same set up of speakers and amps for 3 years and replaced the two 6x9s as i blew them a while back. But recently ive been getting this bitty/crackling sounds coming through the speakers when i start my car. As the car wams up it quitens but continues to persist in the background of the music.
I guessed it was the power to the amps, so i checked the battery link up which was fine, and then made sure all the connections were fitted to the amp right, which there were no loose ends etc, nothing had come off. I then checked the earthing cable which was fine. But i still get crackling. Any one with a guess at what this is? its really driving me up the wall

Alternator wine?
-
no its not the alternator whine, its a bit/crackling sound. the music plays and beneath it is this bit sound until my car warms up then it goes away?? confusing? yes
-
Have you checked that the wire inside the speaker isnt touching the plastic cone and not coincedently moving away once you ve given them some use/same time car warms up.Only mention this cos ive had the same before and i had to push the wires every now and again.
-
nothing was touching. im just going to re fit/re wire everything hopefully will sort it out. such a pain though
-
i am stuck for ideas, any help greatly appreciated

Are the speakers out of phase ( "-" connected to "+")? Could the circuit board on the speakers be damaged?

out of phase speakers would not do this.
does the noise ''go with'' the music or is it random?
-
the crackling goes with the dynamic changes in the music, then theres this bitty sound always in the background of the track until the car warms up.
-
does sound suspiciously like shorting, I would describe shorting as like a cracking of a whip ( kind of) every time the bass ( or is it highs? its been a while) hits.
Its hard to tell without hearing it for myself TBH. Its nothing to do with phase though, what you are describing sounds nothing like alt whine either.
It could be some interference caused by some electrical equipment, maybe fuel pump, very unlikely though.
-
doesnt vary in frequency with the engine revs does it???
-
yea it follows the loudness rather than lows. so the louder it gets the more interference and crackling there is. and there is no relation to me revving and the noise happening, its a constant crackle while the car is cold.
When the music was playing i unplugged one of the 6x9 and the noise went straight to the sub. So im guessing something is shorting near the battery? so the power supplying the amps? or something is up with my head unit, it cant be my speakers or my amps ive checked all of them.
anything sound familiar?

What do you mean '' the noise went straight to the sub''?
you mean it was coming though your 6x9's but when you unplugged one then the sub started doing it?
what do you have running from what? HU running 6x9's and front speakers then amp running sub?
EDIT: you have the right idea unplugging things though, try to eliminate/isolate the cause.
-
The sound was coming through the 6x9's so I unplugged both of them and the crackling 'bitty' sound went to the sub.
My 6x9's run off an amp and so does my sub, so ive got power cables from the battery individually powering each amp.
Thanks for the reply! im going to keep unplugging things and see if i can eliminate it!
When i eventually get the time and this is still happening, do you recon it would be useful for me to replace all the cables? I just have a feeling that somethings shorting but i havnt got a clue where, so im guessing the best thing to do is to just take it all out and start again? Just to see if the problems eliminated?

and the sub was not making any unusual noises?
do you have your sub low passed? they shouldn't ever make crackling noises really, the filter should stop it.
It sounds like its something to do with the HU to me.
Try unplugging the RCA's from the HU end but still connected to the amp..
if it still does it then its not the HU
if it doesn't then it is.
try unplugging the RCA's from the amp end but still connected to the HU...
if it still does it then its not the HU or the RCA's
turn off your HU before unplugging and reconnecting the RCA's though.
It seems strange that the noise went when you unplugged the 6x9's. Are you sure the noise was not just quieter through the sub, so when you disconnected the 6x9s it became more obvious that the sub was doing it too?
-
no its defo the 6x9's that were the original source of the crackling, as soon as i unplugged them while music was playing, the sub continued but crackling appeared lightly in the sub sound.
yea im starting to think its the HU aswell, ive had the same set up for years and no problems, so theres only a few things it really could be.
Thanks alot for the replys, il try everything youve suggested and see what happens. im just hoping its nothing stupid lol

ave u got ur phono leads running down the same side as ur power cable to ya boot!? they can pick up on the current and then ya amp picks up on it and plays it through ya speakers my old corsa did this till a run pwoer lead down one side of car and phono's the other specailly if u got to of everything!?

I would love to see that proved. It would be a first on a worldwide level, you could be a pioneer, maybe even in the guiness world records book.

well my old corsa used to do i had the big gauge wiring run up side with phono's and asked my local audio shop at the time what to do to stop he told me that i tried it and it worked!!

Poor local audio shop . Believing the dame myths as everyone else.
The noise stopped due to the movement of the RCA's

oh ok thanks mate i was only going on what i was told learn somehting new every day

learn somehting new every day
1 more down, a couple of million left to go

it was my head unit making the crackling, its a s*** sony xplod and i think the front of the head unit became slightly seperated from the connector, which was causing crackling sounds when the signal went through it.
any suggestions of some reasonably cheap/good headunits?

I thought it might be ;)
how cheap is cheap? up to £100?
