Like some of you I put down my grand in late July, and have not a sniff of a build week. Apparently Xenons + sunroof = muchos waiting.
anyone else bored of waiting, and thinking of buying something else? what else should i spend my £29k on?
We've got a 9 month old and will probably have another (last) child soon- so i'm wondering if a golf is too small for a biggest car.
My wife has a mini, which is currently our only car (as i foolishly sold my WRX a few months ago, expecting a quick turnaround on the GTI due to the credit crunch)
Any cars suggested should be available with leather + at least one Auto for my budget.
really if using the full budget i'd want comparable running costs
Should i go for a demonstrator 330i leather auto- i saw one which has now gone for £25k. sub 4k on the clock
or maybe a passat & a boxster?
-
a5 cabriolet, bmw cabriolet, e-class cabriolet. all seat 4 adults comfortable and all better brands than a vw. though it wont be as nippy as a gti- you got kids to consider. maybe a 4x4 for even more safety and space. audi q5, q7. 30 grand could get u a 3 yr old s4 from audi. boxster isnt very practical with kids but if its a boys toy then go for a cayman- far better than a boxster.
its like havin £30 to spend in a sweet shop.....lol
german is best( apart from vauxhall).
id say the a5 cabriolet. your wife and u would enjoy sunny days on the road..... kids seated snug in the back. look of envy from other drivers. the predecessor was a very good car, high residuals. i should know as i had one. on the other hand a e-class coupe like my dads clk does drop in value much more. its a hard choice mate!
-
Sorry mate, but you are being taken for a ride. Like you I put my deposit down in late july but I've had my car for 1.5 mths now.
I don't know what your dealer has been telling you, but that is completely unacceptable. Agree you should kick up a massive stink.
If you do cancel, if you're thinking about 2 cars (passat and boxster) then I presume you're going 2nd hand and the world is your oyster! Assuming you can get a half decent passat or some other sensible car for the 8k, that leaves 20k for a toy. Personally I would be thinking about a caterham or atom (if budget stretches and if you have a garage).
That was the great thing about the golf, it did sensible and toy all in one decent sized package.

Some dealers have more allocation than others - sounds like you placed an order witha dealer who had used his/her allocation and was waiting for the next batch to be released to the. Sunroof and xenons might alos be working against you but some recent posts suggest not any more.
Given your circumstances a A3 sportback seems a logical choice to me.
-
I was considering cancelling mine. I ordered in mid July and my build week was confirmed as week 46 at the start of October.
I guess I have waited this long so I might aswell wait until the end of the year!
-
Was also pretty close to cancelling, but I finally have the build week so I'm hanging on (plus as a serial gti owner, there really isn't much choice, its the car I want). However, I have to say I've been singularly unimpressed with the whole thing, large deposit, lack of communication (and mostly BS when u do talk to 'em), oh & now they'd like a cheque if you please before they deliver the car! A bridge we'll cross when we finally come to it
But from the feedback round here, its still a great car, & imho worth the wait.
-
If estates are the way forward for you - try the BMW used car site - plenty of nearly new 325d Tourings on their with less than 5k miles - £27-£28k, go get it Superchipped with the change and its good for 250+ brake! Not bad for a diesel... :undecided:
-
Bad news.
I agree with what others have said re dealer allocations etc. but I'd have thought the dealer would have been more up-front at the time.
Certainly worth sticking with but maybe only if they can confirm your car this year.

The general low standard of UK VW dealers is shocking. Most of the sales people have zero product knowledge, are not interested in delivering anything that could remotely be described as customer service and view their job as simply a way of killing time between 9 and 5 in order to get a monthly paycheck with the least amount of effort. They don't return emails or phone calls. Most have failed GCSE Maths so can barely add up the costs of extras let alone work out finance payments. My last car purchase was a Lexus and the dealer experience was unbelievably good. Considering that a Golf GTI now costs the same as a basic IS250, it is very tempting to take my business back to Japan. Unfortunately, the Lexus was a dog to drive, had no rear passenger space and a very small boot. In contrast, the Golf is a much more practical car, more economical, faster and better to drive even if it has to concede a premium quality edge to the Lexus.
So I guess it is all about the car itself at the end of the day, but your post shows that the dealer isn't keeping you reliably informed about what's going on. I can't help feeling that people are buying Golfs despite VW dealers, not because of them. How hard is it to train decent sales people, for goodness sake?
-
if u cancel im sure u'd lose your deposit.
as for the a5 cab with no boot space. luckilyy it uses a cloth hood so boot is still huge.
u need to be more aggressive. im sure if you caused a scene at the dealer they'd help u asap. if you're silent -they'll take their time. a disgrunted customer always gets things done! at a push- u could get some xtra's for compensation because you are " very, very, very angry and seriously contemplating cancelling".
i've been lucky whenever i get a new car but i told my mate when he got his bmw- he got some discount and a later reg.
-
I'm in the dealers now, and test driving a 325i tomorrow. I have suggested they loan me a car until mine arrives. I have now been given a scheduled (not confirmed) build week 2!! No way I'm paying the vat. They are trying to sell me a demo, but it's silver and with a bit less spec, and my discount means it will have to be cheap to be worth it. Build week 2 means I have waited 3 months and should have it by mid feb- a total of 7 months aargh
-
Interesting you mention the VAT hike.
The quote I got for /my/ car at the beginning of this month included the 2010 VAT increase. I am though sure VAG will add another price rise before /my/ GTi surfaces in April. Of course, I gave it some patter about ordering now and why should I pay the increased VAT but I knew the crack I suppose and was just trying it on.
It'll be interesting to hear which way you go Donnie; 325 etc. or stick with the Golf and maybe take the VAT hit.

i feel for you dude, this is shocking.
on principle i would cancel and order from another dealer. try out the internet sites too, often the fleet side of VW can source you a car to your spec sooner than the main sales team. sadly the GTI seems to be doing good business hence they can get away with this.
defo a vote for one of the worst VW garages to help the rest of us to steer clear!
-
Ordered a GT TDI 10th JULY got it will be ready mid September, went on holiday they called and said er no mid October. They were spot on that as the build week. Its here getting it tomorrow. Lux pack, RDC510 with Dab.
Good points they stuck to the PX deal  they are now paying for my private reg to be transfered  save over £35 per month with the finance some deal for October  . Its later than expected but hey it will be worth the wait. Oh and they had a price increase with the extra's but I'm not getting charged for that..

7 months ?
I know its easy for me to say as I have my car, but hang in there dude. You'll love owning her when she arrives. It will be worth it in the end.
Plus you'll have a 10 number plate !!

they've offered me a very similar spec demo which i could have next week- but its an 09 & has 4.5k on it and is silver- i really wanted the carbon grey i ordered.
Also i'd be missing park assist and ipod connectivity - but this one has pretty much everything else of importance to me leather/DSG/ACC/ xenons/sunroof and with Sat NAV, dynaudio & winterpack. i'd get it for the same price (just under £29k). took it for a test drive- not wanting to be a girl but i think it was the colour that put me off - all the GTI demos are silver. and as i have a top o' the range TomTom a 2k built in system would be a step back...
I think he thought i'd bite his hand off, but i'd prefer them to lend me something (anything that's not a fox!) until my golf arrives. (if i don't decide to go for the beemer that is!
I guess its a lesson to you all not so sell your car before delivery- they quoted 2-3m to start with and i though we could survive with just the mini for a month or 2. Not for 6m+ though.
on a separate note- i've just been playing around on the touareg configurator- £335 for tyre pressure sensors!!! i wonder if someone pressed the '3' twice by mistake?

Imo stick to your guns and reject the silver golf. It won't be what you wanted and paying 29k for it, you deserve what you want.
Colour is a massive thing. Its the main thing you see when you look at the car.
Can't believe they're not giving you a better discount given its an older reg and has 4.5k on the clock. Being a demo its going to have been ragged since delivery, ie no running in which per many on this forum equates to a greater risk of problems further down the line.
If you have the cash why not get a second hand beemer, see if you like it. If not you can always put a deposit down for an R!! :)

The average fuel display was showing 20.2mpg, and seeing as i doubt it's been reset, i'd guess it has been ragged!

I would wait as well, My reason is I went from an ASTRA SRi 150BHP (new shape) to a ford Fiesta 1.6 120BHP (new shape)petrol and whilst the car has every gadget known to small cars it was not the ASTRA (IMO a car with plenty of power and good looks). Despite only being 7 months old I've gone for what I really wanted back in 2006 and got the golf.

When I picked my car up the salesman told me VW were toying with taking the VAT hit themselves because of the length of wait folk have had to endure. They were just waiting on official word. So I would hassle them to take the hit. At the end of the day it is only a few hundred pounds for them to absorb compared to selling a new car or losing the sale!!
-
£29k for a used and abused GTi demo ?
You gotta be kidding - buy yourself something cheap to runaround in, provided its got 10+ months MOT you should have minimal expenditure on it and you wont lose money on it. In fact if you give it a clean n polish you might make money on it. I've done this in between new cars before now and never lost out whether it be a Ford Ka or a proper Saab 900 !

I've heard the same, mine was ordered mid Aug, build week 48 (not yet confirmed) and the dealer has told me that VW will take the hit if they have to deliver next year.
-
My dealer told me about 3 weeks ago that as long as my car gets ordered this year, then I'll be safe from the VAT hike. VW are giving dealers an extra 2.5% discount to play with from October until new year to cover the VAT.
-
Maybe I'm being taken for a ride then [paying the extra VAT for April delivery] !
Ava
-
you snooze you lose
-
Mmmmm, perhaps i'll ask for mine to be Jan 1st registration then and let them pay the extra VAT
2.5% extra discount is fine, but who knows what level VAT will return to ?

It's most likely gonna be higher, this ba5tard government has spent like they have a bottomless pit of money and there's no way on earth they are gonna pay billions of debt back, we will.
-
Got it after 17 weeks waiting
Was it worth the wait, it rained on the day I picked it up
Yes IMO

Well the test drives are tommorow going to try a 330i and 335d. The 335d could be the on to go for 30k with 7k on the clock before bartering starts. Xenons leather sat nav etc. Will do the 60 sprint in 6 seconds flat and still get 42mpg- so more boot space faster and cheaper to run. It's a no brainer but I think it's the dsg I'd miss let's see what the BMW equivalent is like.

No contest - the diesel all the way - its a few years since i used a BMW auto box, but i never had any complaints, either shifting with the stick or just leaving it in sport.

Another petrol vs diesel debate. I am a big fan of diesel. Much better performance:economy ratio but I hate diesel not having a decent rev range. Its almost like when you just about to reach an orgasm, your girl friend decide to answer her mobile phone instead!
Check all the electric. All my previous Beemers do have the odd electrical gremlins
-

If you'd said that in the context of most diesels, fine...have you tried a 335d? The lack of that extra 1,000-1,500 rpm can only surely be an issue on track? That thing is so fast in every other way...never had one mind, just a couple of shuttle runs.
The GTD engine isn't too bad either - pretty sure you can get to just south of 4,500 rpm (mine's too new to try yet!). Twin turbos on it would make it useful lower in the rev range as well if that ever becomes economical...

Yes, of course. I recommend a friend of mine and he bought one. For normal driving, diesel is a no brainer.
For nutters like me, that extra 500rpm can make a hell of a difference. Most decent sport engine rev beyond 7000rpm. Unlike diesel engine, it change tone as you rev it at different rpm. If you had driven any high revving engine Type R, M3, GT3 or any Ferrari. You will know what I mean. Your turbo diesel might beat them in straightline give and take situation but I know who is having more fun!
-

Yes, depends on the context!
-
well the deed is done.
turned out i test drove a 330i M Sport convertible & a 330d M Sport Coupe. Both seemed a lot faster than the GTI- (although some of this will be down to having each car for 40 mins on my own) v.s. 20 mins with the VW dealer driving about half the time! (tried GTI & GTD)
£29-30k should get me a year old 335d with sub-7k demonstrator, and that will include leather sat nav/ i drive/ leather adaptive xenons
cancelled the GTI today and got deposit back - i will be searching around for the right 335 as the demo i was considering seems to have been sold
I would have really liked a GTI, but couldn't wait another 4 months on top of the 3 i've waited so far
Anyway eurocanterbury will have spare allocation now, if anyone wants to remove some options you might get it a bit sooner...
-
nice motor tho 29-30k is still a lot of money, esp for a golf. my golf was 4-5k less than that. still, i'm sure you'll enjoy the 33d, amazing engine.
-
Before you make that final decision, there must be a Golf demonstrator out there for sale that's close to the spec you wanted? Ask Eurocanterbury (where i bought my Scirrocco and were very helpful) to call around the country and find you a car close to your order? There are hundreds of dealers and therefore hundreds of demos out there.
I wouldn't worry about buying a demo, my Scirocco was a demo and it was fine, plus how long are you going to keep it for, a few years? Plus if you're looking at BMW demo cars then you're obviously open to that option.
I had a 3 series, lovely car but the Golf has more usable room, better handling etc.
Just a thought?
-
You did what I did, ended up going for BMW too. VW what are you playing at! Ive spent 30k else where! Love VW but WTF!
-
Well the more i think about my £19k for a 1.6TDI the more i wonder whether i've done the right thing.
If my supposed BW48 isn't confirmed by mid next week i too could be heading back to BMW as there are plenty of 116d Sport demos around near me, and i have an excellent indi who will do servcing for £100 for oil/filters to £300 for an Insp 2.
-
116d is a dangerous car. liable to fall asleep driving it!
-
What ever you do dont expect the BMW forums to be any good.
-
116d is a dangerous car. liable to fall asleep driving it!
no GTI but less dangerous than a tdi105 lol!
-
Long lead time I know but this car really is worth waiting for.
-
I did the opposite. Sold my 135i to get a golf gti!
-
These long lead times just prove to me what a stunningly awesome car this mk6 GTI really is. Everyone wants one and many are prepared to wait to fulfill their dream. As soon as I saw VW were bringing out the replacement to the mk5 I lapped up every article and news item on the car until I had set my heart on having one. Fortunately for me I ordered early and only had to wait 2 months for my car but even if I had to wait 6 months I wouldn't have wanted any other car it had to be GTI for me!!!
-
I did the opposite. Sold my 135i to get a golf gti!
And how do the two compare?
-
I am still waiting for delivery so I cannot compare gti vs 135i!
I can briefly summarise my 135i experience after owning one for 18 months.
For--straightline speed, v. practical for a small coupe, decent residuals, excellent customer service from my local dealer
Against--Starting to develop a few electrical gremlins and it doesn't cope very well with my local road. Those turbo do drink petrol---the combined figure is a joke! Sat nav is a waste of
money!
My replacement car need to be more comfortable, reliable and cheaper to run as I do more than 10000 miles a year. My mum drives a mk5 gti so I got a brief idea how good a gti is. Test drove the Mk6 with the ACC and 18 iinch and I was hooked. Just like a 911, it does everything perfectly!
-

Bit of a no brainer Donnie. Good choice. I like the new GTi but £29k is a lot of money. 335d is in a different league in my opinion.
-
I agree the 335d is an awesome car, but tbh if you're gonna compare new to second hand, then there's a ton of nice machinery out there. RS4 would be my choice.... if it weren't too big and costly to run.
