Post by: Das Auto on 25 October 2009, 12:40
What is the law on tinting the 2 front side windows also are the ones in the gti already tinted ? basically I want to tint them so they match the back 2 would that be illegal or would they be ok ?

I don't know if Snoopy has answered your question, (You tube is blocked by company server) I think the law is it must be below 30% Visible Light Transmission.

the ones on the back of the gti are 65% so in theory it will be legal in the uk having them in the front window as well

The law requires that the windows on the vehicle allow at least:

75 per cent of light through the front windscreen
70 per cent of light through the front side windows

Hmmm it would look stupid If the front 2 were lighter than the back 2 not sure what to do now

Pretty much nothing can be fitted to the front windows. Carbon/mirror UV light tint is the most you can fit.

If you tint the front , risk prosecution.

I tinted the windows in my scirocco to match the rears and it looked much better (IMO). I'll probably do the GTI at some point. Jeeze, i'm glad i don't have those ridiculous gaps between the tyres and arches on the Golf, I think having to lower a car from stock just so it doesn't look daft is criminal.....

was the tint on the back windows of the roc the same as the gti ? and i take it by matching your front 2 they were within the legal limit ? I agree with u i think it will look much better on the gti especially with mine being white

If I am not mistaken, the front is not as green as the rear tint...

Das Auto: My car has the rear tint and I feel its quite alright. The normal front is also somewhat tinted as well and looks good to me. Putting on the UV shield which is clear should be good enough.

i just want the front 2 to match the back and for them still to be legal

Don't think you'll get that mate, however if you tint to a sensible degree (like my roc) then you would need to find a very arsey copper who would nick you for it.  I have the windows on my Vito darker than the Roc and haven't been stopped in four years and 100,000 miles....

Those fronts were about 65% I think but then that's laid on the standard window which has a slight tint, really unless you go for a chavvy blackout or mirror you should be fine mate.

I had my MkV Golf GTI's windows tinted with 3M film at 50%, I didn't know the law/limits then...
My car came from the factory with standard VW windows...

I hope this hasn't been discussed on other threads but a little while back, I'd heard that [at least Durham] traffic plod were given some sort of device to measure any opacity of dubious tints at the roadside. Maybe the payback on their speedcams wasn't that great at the time ..

Dont put tints on the front. martininwillerby's old car although looks good, but if that is front tint on his, thats illegal.

So is speeding mate, common sense approach, don't go 'gangsta black' but you can compliment the rears without getting into too much trouble.  If you get stopped you can always peel it off at the roadside.

Some dont mind being Fined for your approach. But giving the rozza's £60 for a penalty, id rather shove it in the fuel tank for 300miles of driving pleasure.
etto and all that.

Saw some blond bint in a range rover get stopped in Beverley last week, she had to stand there and peel of some of the really dark tint on the front windows before she was allowed to go on her way. The idea was that when she got home she would peel off the rest cos it looked a right mess.

Think is she had refused to remove the tints she would have got an on the spot fine.

Phil if you have a 'sensible' level of tint you are very unlikely to get stopped and fined. If you go blackout or something daft then you are asking for trouble.  I have had my Scirocco and my Vito tinted and never had any trouble...
