Title: Bad times, Drive Shaft bolts
Post by: Mikester on 07 October 2009, 16:43
Not really sure how this happened, but i rounded 3 of 6 Drive shaft bolts on the VR today.

I soaked them in WD and left for a while, 3 came out fine, the other 3 just spun and rounded.

I used a torx bit on a small breaker bar.

Going to try and use mulgrips on them tomo to remove them, if not...... Well.......

Any ideas?

They are not torx heads, they are splined.
Try using irwin extractors.

Also when you undo these bolts, always clean out the middle and bang the socket in, then you shouldn't be able to round them.

Im going to pick up a hex set from machine mart tomo, and i will bang them in for sure.

Going to give the rounded ones a go with the propper hex bit, as i only tried twice on each then left them so i can still have a pop at them.

That will do the job wont it?

The spline tools will remove good condition bolts.
This will work for the f**ked ones..

Yep. Cheers for that. I will get one of those to remove the 3 f**ked ones.

And some splines to remove the other sides drive shaft :)

Cheers

TBH knocking on a slightly bigger spline tool will do the trick, then make sure to use the spline tool when fitting the new ones.

I will use the bolts that on my mk3 8v at the moment probably to put into the VR box, as i am using my 8v driveshafts on the VR box, as i think its all the same :)

But i might just buy the splines, and give it a go. And if it fails get the extractors. As i have lots of other bits to buy, so if i can get away with not buying something. i will.

Don't be cutting corners though mate, it will only cost more time and money in the end.

Today, I too tried these bolts for removing the driveshaft to get to the lower ball joint.

Yesterday I bought some Torx bits for the job.  I tried today but they just kept slipping.

I then had a second look and they are 12 pointed XZN bits.

Thankfully my flatmate has managed to get to the balljoint without touching the bolts.

I hate the amount of female allen/torx/xzn bolts on the Golf.

Not just on a Golf mate! Ever looked at an Astra diesel head bolts? Weird!

Mikester get the right tools mate it will save you a lot of heartache in the end. And less busted knuckles!
Check out a local motorfactors as you will be surprised what special tools they keep.

So today i went to machine mart, and bought some propper tools, full 40peice spline, hex and torx bits.

And they all cracked off like a beauty.

Undone the rear engine mounts and dragged all of the running gear away.

Now im left with the engine, ready to change the chains, clutch, service paint and put in.

WIN WIN WIN WIN

HORRRRRAH!

Good good, but

PLEASE PLEASE be careful with the chains, I've done some (with help) on a Corsa and they are different to a belt. Don't want that getting smashed up.

Oh, and don't try doing any engine lifting by hand.

Good good. I know you have a crane, but I've seen people do their backs in by trying to lift it that little but further.

Good good, all should go smoothly then, good to see you aren't hammering on star bits once you know what they are. :)

Me being one. You wouldn't think a mini engine and subframe is heavy.....god I was wrong.
