Title: NOW SOLD!!!!! :( Tornado Red MKII 20v T Project
Post by: harney123 on 04 October 2009, 18:14
Hey guys i've started a bit of a thread on the MKII section but thought i'd move it here for more eyes to see :)

A while ago on a trip home from hospital my old man said one of his mates had a 8v GTI project, basically the bloke who started ruined a perfectly good car! there was no problems what so ever  with it and due to unforseen circumstances he had to get rid and charged me scrap value!!! :D £200 to be exact, now the car was in pieces, about as many pieces as it possibly be but i didn't care

I know what your thinking............ SWEET RIDE!!! to begin with it was just gonna be a bolt it back together and jobs a goodun then a VR6 was in the pipelines but i just couldn't keep away from the 20v T and now i'm glad i didn't :)
Next thing that came was the gearbox and driveshafts etc from a follow forum member (Diamond Hell) and if i'm honest it was a steal :)

after a long time of searching i came across the right engine, its a 40k mileage AGU 20v T from a 2000 reg Audi A3, i got more than i expected if i'm honest, subframe, wishbones, gearbox, ecu, driveshafts, hub and brake assembly, PAS pump the list goes on and all for £900 :D

after a week or two of tryin to find somewhere to do this project my good mate and Audi Technician Matty 'wheres my hammer' Spragg said bring it to my dads and i'll move his Porche Boxster (YUCK!!!) outside :D so thats what we did and we started stripping the block.

We cracked on for a good few hour and got it from that..........

to this..........

and now i've sold my pride and joy to fund this project :( my beloved 1984 MK1 Golf GTI Karmann Cabby

i'll be ordering up some new bits this coming week and get an update ASAP.......

Cheers for reading

Michael

Post by: harney123 on 29 October 2009, 14:21
well i've been really ill recently :( so haven't done anything until the past few days :) i took my throttle body, rocker cover and oil sump to be bead blasted and they look great, now all i need to do is mirror polish them (except the sump seems rather pointless to me) i'll get some pics up of these when there done.
I also picked up my bits from Audi today which consisted of....... all new gaskets, water pump and cambelt/tensioner kit :D which came to a fairly respectable £119.97 :D we will be starting to rebuild the engine at the weekend and i'll get pics as we go.

Cheers

right chaps i'm back (sort of haha) my mechanic's leg is sort of better lol so he's starting work tomorrow :D and were going down a different route now, same car engine etc except were gonna go for a mototrsport feel now :) which means cage, buckets and 4 piece harness :D obviously more details than that but just to give you an idea, any views welcome :)

cheers
Title: Re: Tornado Red MKII 20v T Project
Post by: Diamond Hell on 17 December 2009, 16:33
which means cage, buckets and 4 piece harness

With a cage you should always wear helmets when you're in the car - you're putting large quantities of steel tubing close to where your head might be in an accident.  Don't do it unless you really fancy wearing a helmet wherever you go.

Four point harnesses are sh*t, too.  five or six point and the main straps must be 3" wide, or don't bother - you're asking for broken bones on any impact.

What, dead with a smashed in head from beating it on the rollcage?

That's like saying junkies look cool because they're thin.

i did that for most parts. lots of new genuine parts. i do wish i had stripped the engine down and made it look like yours does and done more with the bay. i just wanted it together, done and all working. almost at that stage :D its my daily, so i wanted it back on the road!

what you send off for spraying?

what color is the box going to be?

yeah everything's genuine audi because a friend of mine works there ;) well they cars no where near ready for paint yet, got to 'dummy fit' the engine first :) well i sent off the rocker cover, sump and inlet manifold and now got everything back except the manifold lol the gearbox will be silver keep it clean and simple :) some other bits are goin to be gold but you'll have to wait and see what :)

more to come in a couple of weeks

hello again guys and girls this post has faded into the back drop quite severely recently so it's time to bring it back! I've been in and out of hospital for 5 months now so things stopped but thats a boring story for another day! hahaha. well the engine is done were now in the process of moving the shell so we can dummy fit the engine to make sure everything fits before paint :) oh and colour wise i'm thinking matte? just purely for a nice motorsport look but to be honest i stole the idea from a lambo i saw in some form of motor racing haha but i'll get photos and get back to you. oh and if anyone knows of someone selling an 02a gearbox that would be great because mine got left in the cold and damp too long and is now corroded on the inside :(

cheers

well the shell is still in the same state as page 1! hahaha but were moving the front subframe and shell over oh and engine mounts! can't forget engine mounts

well the engine cost £999 it was a 40k 2000 AGU, the 2000 AGU has the same internals as the 2000 BAM engine, so with a good service and a new head gasket you could stick a K04 on, but i wouldn't advise it just incase! I opted for the K03S because its one up from standard and the engine had done 40k so should be fairly worn in.

any other questions i'll answer (as far as my ability anyways haha)

but in my estimations to get this car on the road its gonna cost another 4-5k  which is crap but at the end of it the car should pay for itself in happiness hahaha

right chaps and chapettes,

i've added up everything i'll need to buy to get this car on the road and i literally mean everything. from nuts and bolts to carbon firbe bucket seats and the verdict is................ it's too expensive in the real world haha sooooooooooooo new plan!
i'm going to buy a running MK2 GTI and drop the engine out and swap all my bits straight over  whilst you all maybe thinking i'm cheating its the only logical way to do it! unless i win the lottery!!! plus it will get done this year. all i'll need after buying the car is a custom exhaust and my ECU

opinions welcome.

cheers

well funny story really, i've been investigating and technically i don't need a valver purely because the only reason i was getting one was for the breaks but i thought to myself your uprating them anyway! so why pay more and ruin a classic than just buy an 8v  so i'm looking for a 8v now hahaha (i'll make my mind up eventually!) ummmmm well seeings it has to be in half decent condition i'm thinking around £1000. think thats a decent amount because i'm not worried about the engine or how many miles it's done because that will be coming straight out! oh and i may rebuild that engine also and stick it in a polo or something but who knows!

Cheers

as long as its sound bodywork colour isnt an issue purely because it'll be a track car/drag car. don't get me wrong i will be using it for day to day use as well but because it'll spend a majority of the time doing those things so it's not important plus there isn't a colour i dont like really! my fav's are black/white/red which will be the easiest to source  thanks for your help man it's much appreciated

well i said mid 20's... right who wants to know this weeks lottery numbers?

poor parents give them some peace!

well i'm sure many would chew your arm off for the motor but sadly this time of year means a lot of empty pockets.....  you'll need to leave an add on here for more than a day to get some attention and maybe it would be worth while mentioning what kind of prices you have in mind??

Well if needs must and all, shame though... Have you thought about a price or are you going to let eBay decide?

Ah don't worry about the timing though really... Not everybody is hit hard at Christmas... Still people about with fat wallets regardless of the time of year.....
