Title: GTI Meets??
Post by: Ady189 on 29 September 2009, 11:27
Hi,

Does anyone on here organize any Golf GTI meets around the country? Or know of any coming up in the near future?

Cheers

Ady

If they are anything like bike meets you have a nice cup of tea and talk about gear ratios, etc..

I've never understood meets, most people on the net I cant f**kin stand and would rather stick a jaggy stick up my arse than meet them. Plus we have a forum to discuss stuff.

I've always wondered that, too. I have always quite fancied going to one, but I can't help thinking it would be incredibly nerdy and boring. I could be wrong, though

end of the day meets are what you make of them.  If you combine it with other things such as going to shows (be on the clubstand) or organise rolling road days, photoshoots, then it makes it far more interesting and a good chance to compare differences etc and also put names to faces and make new friends

the only reason i would be going to a meet would be to see the older generation golfs! Much more to them than the later golf that have everything covered in plastic :undecided:

As far as I know, Damo, who bought himself a brand new MKI GTI, is organising regular GTI meets.  For sure, he is the leader of the pack  and quite representative of such gatherings IMHO

Ah, maybe you don't know who Damo is ?

I've been going to various car related shows/meets/events since I was a wee lad going with my Dad in the 70's. Seems weird to me that some of you, who are clearly enthusiastic about your GTI's (otherwise you wouldn't be on here), don't want to meet like-minded people.

But as said, each to their own.

Well if anyone wants a mk6 section mini meet - Next Saturday, the 10th, Audi Driver International at Castle Combe is as good a time as any. Not much use to our barbarian members oop north but a start!
Details on here somewhere: www.autometrix.co.uk
A chance to both talk mk6 and look at other things VAG too + take your car on track if you're brave enough.

May be helful if you do point out the irony?
Look at my post where I've said how many VAG car I've owned, plus I'm on other forums. I don't feel the need to post sh!te in every forum section. Thus 'hiding in the mk6 forum' is humour as that's where I mostly now hang out (that's where I have a valid and current contribution to make). I can therefore express opinions on my latest car which has taken me all my working life to save up for.
If a few guys with mk6s fancy a meet up to chat about stuff mk2 owners have no interest in what's the harm in that? I meet up regularly with a bunch of guys with a whole host of other VAG cars. If you don't like people talking mk6s don't have a mk6 section.
Jeez, you want people to come to meets and then give all this inverted snobbery stuff.

PS. It's sums not somes. Basic English.
Title: Re: GTI Meets??
Post by: dan_apps on 04 October 2009, 12:00
1. irony is its a section.

2. valid point on making a contribution and i understand that.

3. i do have interest in other mk's, (as do most others on here) i did have a mk5 GTI til the start of this year.

4. no snobbery, just putting my opinion across due to some of the reactions from the start of this thread. i for one would like more peeps to come to our meets, but to criticise and say its nerdy etc when some have never been to one......

5.

PS. It's sums not somes. Basic English.

thanks for pointing this out to me, ill be sure to remember next time!

Cool, points taken.

I wasn't one of the ones to say it was nerdy though. But when you think about it, it is a bit! So is being on a car forum, but everyone has a hobby and thus would come accross as a nerd to people that don't share their interest. Blimey, I even know blokes who go on Golf forums - Golf as in wearing silly clothes and beating a ball with a stick whilst pretending to be posh.
So, we're all nerds really  :nerd:

And I really didn't see the bit on here about meeting up at Audi Driver International, and I still can't see it now! So I humbly apologise for that.

What a load of tosh.
Myself i don't go to the other forum sections except the classified the main reasons? Theres so many numpties, think they know it all kids on them that know nothing.  Also there full of modifiers.
That does not meen im not a VW Golf enthusiast it simply meens i don't want to read the rubbish.
I currently own a few golfs, a mk1 GTI campaign(for 20 years+ now), Mk1 S1 1.6 GTI, a mk2 GTI16V, Mk5 GTI and have a mk6 GTI on order. I have been a member of the campaign register/mk1 owners club since near day one and know most things about the GTI and its history so i would class myself as an enthusiast.

I can't help but wonder how much longer I will be staying on this forum :embarassed: When I first joined back in April, everybody was excitedly talking about the Mk 6 GTI, which - at the time - we knew relatively little about. We wondered what it would be like to drive, what the different colours really looked like, or whether it was a good alternative to the Scirocco. Six months on and the general level is slipping, slowly but surely. It is now almost impossible to start a new thread without it generating into the sort of aggressive chaos I can frankly do without :embarassed: :embarassed:

I must admit lots of threads end in a pointless argument which has nothing to do with the orignal thread, just ignore it and take things with a pinch of salt. Most of it is harmless banter which i quite enjoy and if you need to know the answer something you can bet someone on here will know. There are some very helpfull people on here

I often feel the same I'm afraid. But Simonpolly is right, and the real idiots are a noisy minority.
The other mk6 forums are also too quiet. I still think the moderation on here leaves a lot to be desired.

Dont be dishearthen Frogti, this is my first forum and I just ignore comments that is not relevant but meant to provoke.. these individuals just crave attention and frankly are likely to have crap social skills in real life... so why am I still here? Its because there are many who still provide useful comments and assistance...

Its happening all over again, this happened in the mk5 section, and nearly everyone bailed out from their because of all the mickey taking. Tis a shame as Post counts have now Plummeted in that section from this same thing. Hope it doesnt go the same way in here aswell.
Wont do the forums reputation any good.

People shouldnt need to explain why they dont go to other sections in a car forum. They visit because they enjoy the car they have purchased, Its not a crime to not visit over sections if you dont have an Interest in those area's
Or if it goes into a shows meets section for example, less people with mk6's are likely to read it, hense why people try and keep it in the forum the car belongs in.

Moderation, that I can defo agree with. I had to endure weeks upon weeks of people trying to come the smart arse with me saying you dont have a gti, you dont even have one on order, come on kev wheres your car etc etc this went on every day for a long time, a lot of people were serious and very strong on their attempted piss takes over my comments on buying the golf. Right from the start I said I would be buying at the end of July, and I did it. Still I got pricks trying to come the cnut with me.

Then you get some posters who are like, 'oh this place is not so nice' or 'i dont like the atmosphere here' or 'im not sure how long i'll hang around' - I mean come off it, If I could put up with that sh!t that I took then I fail to see where anyone has any plausable reason not to want to be in this section or forum. It baffles me really.

Hi,

Does anyone on here organize any Golf GTI meets around the country? Or know of any coming up in the near future?

Cheers

Ady

and to be fair, there is no mention of MK6 meet in the OP

ONE MASSIVE problem the forum did suffer is that there is alledgelly a " clique " when it comes to meets etc, summat proved by the poor attendance at the Forum BBQ.

so ANY meet is encouraged to be posted in the " events " sections to encourage all members to attend. even those without a gti kev

oh and did you all know there was a forum charity too http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=111467

I've said this many a time... Just because we all have/had golfs, doesn't mean we're all going to get along. I first thought people who made friends on the internet were proper nerds, with no social life. Then a few shows later I found there were some genuine, like minded people, who were it not for this forum I'd have never met. In some cases its gone beyond cars, in fact a few of us went to another guys wedding recently!
So if you guys are happy to stay in your specific section of the forum I dont have a problem with that, just as long as you realise there is more than just this section! In response to the question about VW meets, then there is a section for that, which we try to have threads for as many meets as we know about. If you want to start a meet yourself for mk6 owners, then do so, but post it in the meets section as there just may be others who'd like to come along as well.

On all forums there is normally some kind of banter, but trust me this is mild compared to some I've read! Tarring everyone outside the mk6 froum as childish idiots is ridiculous. Agreed alot of rubbish gets spouted in the 'off topic' section, which is the sole reason its there! Without it, the rubbbish would just invade the rest of the forum.
If you dont like 'modifiers' then there's not alot you can do about it, so I can see why you wouldn't want to look at certain areas of the forum! There are alot of people who want to do more to their car, me included! I cant see that I'll ever drive a standard car again, they weren't perfect from factory so whats wrong with finding ways to improve?

As for the dreaded Moderation, well too much and you get called power hungry nazis. Not enough and things get out of hand. Its a difficult thing to balance, with alot of new members in a section about a new car that no-one knows a great deal about yet, there is bound to be issues. What normally happens is someone who appears to be a sane and level person, gets asked if they'd like to moderate a section they seem to know and care about. In time this will happen to the mk6 forum.

I dont really know what else to say but stick around, if your happy staying in this section, so be it. If you want to go to a meet, there are loads if you look in the relevant section. Although you're coming out of show season so this will slow down a bit. If you want to show others your car, do so in the 'dub rides' section. If you want a full blown project page, there is a section for that in which JV or Toph will create a thread for you that no-one else can post in... etc etc. We're all here to have fun, learn somethings, share knowledge blah blah blah.

That's what moderation is for Kevin, we don't live in caves anymore

Moderation, that I can defo agree with. I had to endure weeks upon weeks of people trying to come the smart arse with me saying you dont have a gti, you dont even have one on order, come on kev wheres your car etc etc this went on every day for a long time, a lot of people were serious and very strong on their attempted piss takes over my comments on buying the golf. Right from the start I said I would be buying at the end of July, and I did it. Still I got pricks trying to come the cnut with me.

to be fair kev, you did come out all guns blazing, so made yasen fair game :afro: good giver and taker you

I had to, it was me against the world.
