My exhaust is banging again!
This happened before shortly after fitting the SS cat back system (Magnex)
So I know which 2 lumps of rubber it is.
These have lasted about 3 years so not long!
Dont suppose there are any stronger ones out there?
Its the twin mount on the middle box.
-
I think you can get uprated polybush type hangers. Have a look on a few of the GTI parts sites like Awesome and see what they offer.

Thanks Nick! Really hadnt even considered that! :embarassed:
Think a SS system is heavier than standard so prob why these mounts dont last!
-
Yeah it will do, my powerflow jobbie weighs loads!

WooHoo! Found some on Venom! £4.84 each! Not bad at all Powerflex ones.
Will have to ring and check they are the right ones but they look right!
Cheers Nick!
-
might have a look at these myself!!
mine seems to be knocking again atm!!
(ya got a linksy)

Another option is standard one but wrap a cable tie around the middle makes them a lot tighter.

+1 getto why of doing it, I did it with the intention of replacing them but never got round to it. Still works.

I had the same problem and tried these but they stretched just like the others. Mine gets a bit of abuse round the track though.
In the end I used the GSF ones and also put a large cable tie around them. I've had no problems since.
The magnex exhaust is about 7 kgs lighter than the standard exhaust so god knows how long they would last with the heavier standard exhaust. Another good design by VW!
Cheers

So would that be a quick fix on my knackered ones?

REALLY!!?? I always thought that the stainless steel grade is heavier anyway and its thicker metal.

Might be, yes.

will try this when i get home, my full powerflow sustem is causing the rubber to stretch!

Be worth a try I guess as it will be a few days before the poly ones arrive!

Yes it should help, its kept me going on a few trackdays. You will need good quality cable ties though not the cheap pound shop ones.
When you get your new ones put a cable tie around them too, it will stop them stretching too much.

Yes just looked it up. The full magnex cat back exhaust is / was 7kgs lighter than the standard exhaust. Stainless steel is stronger than the normal exhaust metal and less prone to corrossion so I presume that they can make them from a thinner gauge material and there are less baffles and packing inside them which will save weight.
I only bought mine for the weight saving so got them to weigh it first. As far as I can tell apart from noise they make very little differance performance wise.

Agree on the performance bit! My system added about 3bhp (RR figures!)

Buy cable ties!
Get mine for free from mates workplaces!

Std exhuasts have more baffles/internals and larger mid box than after market (if it has a mid box) so would be heavier in that respect.
If Magnex system is Aluminized MS then it will be lighter as it is same grade steel with less internals.
SS systems use thicker material and bracing as SS is less ductile and brittle compared to MS hence the extra weight.
Its 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other really SS= bigger less internals MS= smaller more internals i would not expect that much weight difference.
With the mounting rubbers i have found that most after market systems are fitted with cheap rubber mounts
which dont last.
I fitted all powerflex ones after Powerflow ones fell apart after 6 months, this was even worse as the exhaust was held poorly and deflected into the rear beam and heatsheilds, i now have Powerflex on the mid double hanger, VW on the second point and a screw in Mini one on the rear box hanger.
This is now the best its been but due to fooked engine mount i am getting a slight banging when pulling away hard
Powerflex mounts are ok when they actualy fit, VW/OE mounts are made of GOOD Rubber not PVC/EVA as per cheap ones and will carry an after market exhaust fine.
Its all about gettin it to fit right

That didnt work!
So have ordered a pair of Powerflex mounts!
-
lol, how long did they last before they melted :D
-
Melted? How?
The cable tie is around the centre of the rubber mount not touching any hot metal!
-
neighbour of mine did the same and he got half way to work and the exhaust dropped off
(he put them round a broken rubber to get him to work)
would have thought it would still get hot enough to melt??
i dunno, who cares, lol

If you hang an exhaust with them they will melt, around the rubber mount is ok as it is away from the heat as such.

The hanging brackets dont get hot enough to melt the cable ties. If they did they would melt the rubber hangers.

Correct!

Plowerflex mounts arrived yesterday and will get fitted on Saturday!

I was suffering the same with mine recently, so I had the exhaust off at the weekend to re-fit the whole exhaust.
I got the uprated rubbers from GSF, then put a big fat cable tie just a bit loosely around the rubber to take up the heavy pull if I'm giving it some. Now my exhaust is blow-free and nice and straight.
I looked at the powerflex bushes (but missed this thread!) and thought they were too pricey!
-
Its a crap idea! If you squeeze a diamond shape in the middle it only makes it longer!
Last time these rubbers went I did it the other way, cable tie around the rubber. This only causes a solid mount with no give!

I take it that is a reference to my post calling Len 'sh!t'.
Sorry Len, it was just a joke mate, no offence.
As for you Slim, stop deleting my posts, and get a sense of humour

Just doing my job :) :p

What a pig of a job!
Didnt get tyres done over weekend and was hoping I could do this job when car was on a ramp!
Got it up as high as I could onto axle stands but that dont give ya much elbow room!
Blooming things wouldnt come off the car side mont so I undone the thing and pulled em off, off the car!
New ones slipped on easy!
Why is a small job always so difficult! Bah!
Anyway upshot is exhaust is now hanging correctly and not banging!
ALSO its a lot quieter!
So I would recommend these Powerflex mounts!
-
Sounds good. My powerflow system slightly hangs to the left, and moves abit and hits the bumper now and again. Might give these powerflex mounts ago.
Glad they worked alright on yours len,
