Has anybody got any answers to the :sad:diesel sound I'm experiencing, on tickover only, with my GOLF V GTI.
My car runs perfectly and I have recently changed to a high quility Mobil synthetic oil but this didn't make any difference. Hope somebody has a solution to this. The dealers say there's nothing wrong and that they all sound like this but I'm not convinced.

A very discussed topic, everything you need to know ... http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=115268.0

+1, it's normal.
Direct injection petrol engines tend to have a tendency to sound like this at idle due to the combustion process / injectors.
-
+ 1, mines done it since new, you get used to it.

..........hi mate.Mine does the same & like you i'm not happy with it.Does your's sound ''normal'' on tick over & then get the rattle when warm ? as this is what mine does.Mine is on the AXX engine code 05 reg & if you read though all the post's mentioned on here you will see the the user under the name of Lucas had the same issue & had some parts replaced & now his sounds as it should.
Mine has been to my local VW main dealer & they agree it should not sound as it does. The parts at fault on mine & Lucas car are the cam chain & a few other related parts. My after market warranty covers this so it's going in this week to be repaired.Any further help pm me or Lucas & i'm shure we can help further.

It seems that to a certain extent the diesel sound is normal and nothing to worry about. But some people seem to have a different problem, maybe it would be helpfull if we could hear a sound clip of the 'problem' noise?

I had the same issue on my 06 GTI. Sounded fine from cold but as soon as it warmed through it sounded like a bag of bolts. Changing the timing chain and tensioner sorted it.

Thanks for that mate. What engine code & year is your's please ?.

My car runs perfectly
A common characteristic, as others have reported
and I have recently changed to a high quility Mobil synthetic oil but this didn't make any difference.
Erm . . . there is no such thing as high quility Mobil synthetic oil - Mobil oils are cr@p, expecially in modern engines. Put some decent quality, Volkswagen approved oil (to VW standard 504.00), from a high quality European oil company - who use real 'synthetics', and not mineral oil - which Mobil use!
Hope somebody has a solution to this. The dealers say there's nothing wrong and that they all sound like this but I'm not convinced.
The dealer is correct.

Erm, why the need for PMs? This is a public forum, and we all help each other out in a 'public' manner!

.......nothing ment by it but a lot of the ''forum mechanics'' on here say there is nothing wrong with the engine & thats how it's supposed to sound which is crap,it's a high performance engine & should not sound like at tractor. So if he wants a bit more info & not have to go through a load of spam saying it's'' normal mate'' & ''nothing to worry'' he could pm me.
Don't want to cause any bother.

I've got an 05 Axx, it does sound a bit tappity on idle. It would cool if someone were to list all the actual parts that were changed and the approximate costs. I don't find it too bad, I've come to understand it as a characteristic of the engine, however if there is a hard and proven fix out there a public forum would be the perfect place for this info.
Is it possible you or Lucas can compile it Gene?
-
If you find the orginal thread for this which is about 14 pages long & go to the last but one page you can see the parts that need to be changed a couple being the cam chain & tensioner etc,but be warned total cost of parts comes to around £400.00 !!!!!!.
-
The problem part is the cam adjuster which is attached to the exhaust cam. If you order the adjuster from VW they will sell you a 'repair kit' which consists of a new adjuster, the housing and a new gasket.
The cost is £260 ish. They change the cam chain and tensioner I am guessing, because of their reletive cheapness plus the desire to fit all new components when changing the adjuster.
-
£400 ish to solve a problem that isn't a problem (for me).... I think not.
If I wanted to waste money on my fantastic car there are heaps better ways to do it than that....
-
The adjuster doesn't just make your engine nice and quiet. Its job is to change the cam timing.
Mine is being changed in the next month or so. I have just changed the control valve because the electrical connector was damaged (Car runs smoother, but noise still present) Next I will change the adjuster, chain and tensioner. Before it is changed, I will have it on the RR and then again after to see if it affects performance and/or emmisions as well.
-
Mine is going in on wednesday to have it fixed..........just dropped mine off & after a bit of a battle with the warranty company ............there paying.  .
-
I've asked to have a look at the removed parts so will post the findings when i get the car back, should be late thursday.
-
Well just got back from the garage & to say i'm over the moon is an understatment  .The car now sounds as it should with no rattle & just the burble from the Milltek. The mechanic who did it said the chain was so slack that you could lift it off the cam drive wheels !!!!!!!!!!.Had mine done under a warranty i took out with the car but the guy who did the repair replaced the chain & the tensioner & gaskets etc.
Well worth it just for the sound alone. .

Would have been interesting to hear a sound clip
Mine sounds like a diesel at start up but i cant hear aything once im on the move.
-
^^ Indeed, I'm convinced the noise you (Gene Hunt) speak off isn't the 'normal' ticking that most of us have called the diesel effect but something else, it would be good to hear it for future reference.
Glad you got it sorted and you're happy with your car again

If any one is close to the Harrogate-Leeds-York area & wants to meet up to hear what mine now sounds like you are welcome too.
