Let us see how many of you have tinkered with their new babies?
-
i think im just going to wait and assess the car a little first. only driven 15miles since i got it and already struggles putting the power down in the wet (not used to this wheel spin business). might just put some more miles on the clock and wait til the winter months are behind us

I think i'm the only one.....

It seems you are gossa. Find that quite shocking really... but im sure it will soon change. I think over on the mk5 board at least 50% of people have remapped and I have only ever heard on one person going back to std.
Looks like with all the talk of performance gains people have forgotten about the improved economy.

I don't think many will take the risk of stage 2 on such a new car just yet. And in addition to that there are still a lot of people on here still waiting for theirs to arrive.
My plans are for a stage 1 on mine as soon as I possibly can, which means that considering I haven't taken delivery yet it could be right away!
-
Would be interested, but it's illegal in France  Might be tempted by getting it done in the UK when I'm next over, though
-
Are they stricter than the Germans, then?
-
Not due delivery til nov/dec, so will potter about over winter with stock everything, but will undoubtably start *alterations* some time next year, chip & exhaust only this time thou, i think i've had enough driving sideways over speed bumps
-
i'm gonna be whiter than whiter for now just to ensure i keep my warranty intact.

What exactly is the issues with the warranty? If you pick up a problem with the engine will they just point and say it is the remap, even if it might not be the problem and then loose your waranty or is that just one of those grey issues that can go any way?
-
To be honest I'm quite happy with the car at the moment as it is. With winter not too far away I just want a conservative drive cos the roads over the North Yorkshire Moors can be quite wild. Maybe look into it next summer.

They would be perfectly within their rights to deny any engine related warranty claims - if the engine was modified beyond the standard specification. There is no hard and fast rule one way or the other on how they deal with this. Which in my very humble but learned opinion, if you do want to remap, it is vital that you only get it from a remap company who is truely dedicated to VAG products.

Many moons ago, I chipped and eventually my gearbox went pop. If I were VW then I would void the warranty on the gearbox, drive shafts (in fact anything transmission related as well). But then, there's been mention somehwere on the forum about VW dealers offering remaps and not affecting the warranty.

No, that isn't correct.
OK, some dealers may be offering remaps, and the individual dealer themselves may honour any 'warranty' - but the Volkswagen UK and Volkswagen AG warranties will still be voided. So if you do get your VW dealer to do the remap - it is absolutely vital that you have an utterly perfect 'relationship' with said dealer. If they have ever given ANY cause for concern, such as being difficult with a previous warranty claim - then do NOT get them to do the remap!

There's an ABT dealer at my place. And they're offering to the VI GTI up to 2 Stages.
Stage 1: 260hp (still warrantied by the dealer)
Stage 2: 300hp (not warrantied by the dealer)
From what I've heard so far, ABT is a reputable company and have been doing stuff like this for a good while.
So what do you guys think?
Is it worth it?

If you can speak German, log onto one of the German VW forums. Abt is extremely popular in the Golfs 'fatherland', and Abt have been both tuning and professionaly racing Audis for years. Should be absolutley fine.

Yea I thought so too! Been surfing around and researching them for awhile now already.
Problem at my place here is, VW Service Center will only take the car in if its a Stage 1.
If its a Stage 2, they'll reject it.
That's only reason why I'm not going for Stage 2 yet. Not until the warranty is over.
On the Stage 2, the turbo is upgraded to push out the 300hp.
And ABT's logo is imprinted on the turbo, making it obvious its been modified to the engineers at the service center.
Therefore, if Stage 2 has no turbo mods, then the engineers will probably think its a Stage 1!

Remap the GTi or go for the R?

hmmm £500 or a long wait and £28k

i'll take the GTI anytime in a heartbeat!

i'll take the GTI anytime in a heartbeat!
If I was earning double what I am now then I think that I'd get an R. However I'm not and never will be so the GTI is fine for me too! With a re-map it can have more than enough go for general road use, rides well and has XDS to keep traction.
There are however some bits of trim on the R that will be very sought after from humble GTI drivers I think. I can see a lot of younger members lusting after the side skirts for a starter. Then there's the tasty rear lights. Some interior bits too, such as the black steering wheel trims as I really don't like the shiny GTI ones. The door trims look nicer in the R too. I can see plenty of GTI/R hybrids in the pipeline in time.

yea totally agree with you! if I had that extra cash to spare, I might consider but will think about it many times before making a firm decision. if it was a GTI version/type R, I probably save alittle more but, its still the GTI in a heartbeat!!! lol!
I spoke to my local ABT dealer and he told me that they can alias with my local VW dealer to have it delivered to me with the full ABT bodykit with stage 1 (260hp)!
I'm also thinking to slap on 19" BBS CX-R with KW variant 3! That's all I plan to do and keep till the warranty is over before moving on to stage 2 (300hp). my local dealer warrants it till stage 1 only but not stage 2 cos stage 2 will require an upgraded turbo!

i find the decision to bring the R out when there are already so few GTI's on the road a little strange. Could it be that VW are trying increasingly to tempt both BMW and Audi drives to down grade from their 3 series and A4's to the golf.... because that would work!!

Agreed, though I think the R will be for a different type of customer (more hard core). Personally, I would always prefer a BMW over a VW (if they weren't so damned expensive) simply because of the RWD. As for Audis, IMHO they're just overpriced versions of VWs, the front LED DRLs are OTT and, at least according to Top Gear, they're driven by cocks

I would agree with that... my brother bought one a couple of months back!
Although he has seen the light (like I told him he would :smug:) and he now wants to get rid. For some reason he thought paying a premium would get him something that much better that the golf he used to have.

Just spoke to my dealer who said they are working with VW racing now and will soon be able to offer fully warrantied stage 1 remap.
Anyone else heard about this?
-
I've asked my dealer to also look into any engine mods that will also still be covered by the warranty, will report back once I hear (and how the warranty will be affected).

It's the short model life for the Mk6.
VW are milking it with premium versions just 6 months in.
Having said that I am very tempted by the Golf R. If the price is less than £30,000 for a 5 door DSG then I will probably get one.
It's just the Mk7 looming over the horizon that stays my hand. If it is much lighter, smaller and more sporting than the lumbering giant the Golf has become then the R might be a waste of money.

Think a polo may be your best bet

I bought CAR magazine for the Golf R write up.
Not worth the money, they waffle on about the haldex.
