Seems to be contageous around here at the moment!
Clashed wing mirrors with some 306 this morning on a narrow country lane, after initial impact it looked like a lot of damage, mirror hanging down, half the assembly lying in the road... but picked up the casing that had come off, fitted the mirror back on then the casing and it all looks and works fine.
Except the casing has a slight crack, and the indicator is broken (glass and bulbs). So I am mightily relieved as I have a big round trip to Scotland on Friday... and couldnt have done it with a taped up mirror!
But obviously although it all looks ok from a distance, its not - and I want it fixed. Is this a whole new assembly does anyone know? Or can the casing+indicator be replaced as parts? Casing is probably going to be pricey anyway as its colour coded..... but if I can avoid the whole replacement what is a 99% working part I would like to!

Pffft, thats nothing. You want to try going into the back of someone + £700 of front end repairs :D :D (like I did a few months ago lol, muppet)
This surely is the perfect opportunity to get some CF wing mirrors :D ? Thats what I did with my front end.
-
Doh! Yeah I think I've gotten away very very lightly!
Just done a search and it seems CF ones are quite popular ;) but hopefully the parts seem to be able to be replaced without going the whole hog.
I'll pop down the $tealer this afternoon and get them to have a look at what can and can't be replaced (typically its usually some bracket or fixing that has snapped causing the whole damn thing to be broken!)
-
If you need a new mirror casing then it might be worth getting it painted by one of these smart repair places rather than the $tealers bodyshop - probably cheaper!
A friend of mine had the mirror knocked off his Audi A6, total bill from the Audi $tealer was about £360 (supply/fit/paint). Gulp.
-
Which mirror did you clip? As I have some OEM mirror indicators as ive put In.pro smoked ones in mine. The drivers one has a small crack which is why I replaced. The passenger side is fine though. Let me know if that helps.
Or get some smoked ones in.

LOL, so the 306 was a right off!

I'll look into it now, but do you have a motorcycle repair shop nearby? They can often 'plastic weld' and respray to like new. Some specialist car body shops can also do this, but you'd be better going to an 'independent' one, rather than a main stealer one.
Just clarify a couple of points though, I take it the drivers side mirror (well, he could have been reversing or sommat :lipsrsealed:), but do you have the 'leccy folding mirrors with puddle lights, or just the standard manual folding mirrors?

Very good point which I should have mentioned really. My near side headlight cluster snapped its plastic bolts or bracket (cant remember now ? ?) in the impact so the only thing holding it in place was the fact it sits between the front bumper / bonnet / grille. They plastic welded it back into place and that worked a treat ;)

Cheers - its the drivers side unfortunately, but thanks a lot anyway :)

Hi TT - yeah the 306 was just a pile of bits in the road behind me :D
Yep drivers side, and yes its the full on all singing all dancing folding/heated/courtesy light mirror with indicator integrated.

I'll look into that (thanks again TT), The casing fitted back on with no problem, but there is a slight crack, and as mentioned the indicator bulbs are smashed as is the plastic cover. There's no other scuffs and scrapes, so I might just grin and bear the casing for now depending on whether the indicator lense can get replaced easily

Just got back from the dealer - and ordered the indicator unit and a new case (+paint) £107 all in.
They wanted another £40 for them to fit it, but I told them to do one :D
Didnt think that was too bad, I'm sure I could get it painted cheaper, but I cant be a*sed to ring round and find out, as I dont know any paintshops.
Thanks as usual for helpful responses! Is the indicator assembly easy to fit? :D
-
Oh and apart from one very very fit bird working there, I wasnt that impressed with the dealers! Although nice enough, they were a bit clueless - and didnt seem capable of going to the loo themselves. I wouldnt be surprised if I turn up and they've ordered a red VW van mirror by accident.... especially after doing all the paperwork, me paying and then just walking off he asks... "it was the drivers side wasnt it?"
I await the results :D
-
And your surprised?
-
My first dealings with VW... i went with an open mind! :)
-
tbh my dealership (Stourbridge) was really helpful. Salesman wasn't overly helpful after I'd done the deal (to be expected really, although they did start jumping when my Audi was still registered in my name a month later due to their cock up!!LOL!!)
The service dept were quite good (one VERY nice lady  )
And the receptionist, well, suffice to say. "Milksplat"

-
Doh! Have a spare indicator sitting here you could have had for the postage

What colour is the car?
I have some reflex silver casings!

Sadly, that is very common - even more common on the earlier Audi S cars which had the solid alloy door mirrors!

Sorry for late reply - thanks for the offerings! I decided to just get it all from the dealer including the new casing painted (its grey by the way :) ) - it wasnt a bad price
TT (or anyone) - any link or tips how to replace the indicator would be most helpful

Look at the top of the Mk5 section - there is a sub-forum for 'maintenance + info' - there is thread titled 'free workshop manuals'

I had a ding on my wing mirror recently and a replacement painted shell was £76 from dealer. Already painted in Black Magic Pearlescent. It was a stock part, which is quite lucky.

TT - thanks had a look there, but the relevant external mirror link seems to be dead :(
Can anyone offer some advice/instructions on removing the old indicator and replacing it? It doesn't look as straight forward as I'd hoped from first inspection!
Many thanks

TT my bad - just had a quick skim of your thread, and confirm the links do work in IE.... (was using Firefox)
Ta very much!
-
Done.
All fitted under 30 mins, fairly easy job, although probably made a lot easier that the clips had broken on the mirror casing because of the smash, although because of the lack of a long torx screwdriver I had to remove the mirror motor to get at the indicator housing screws.
Thanks for advice, and thanks to TT and his guides, top drawer!
