Title: The old b!tch...
Post by: DarnPB on 09 August 2009, 16:43
...is still fighting hard and I am now getting very dispondant with it. In fact, I may break it for spares if I don't come up with a solution soon!
Changed the throttle body yesterday in case the throttle position sensors were playing up causing me this heartache and grief. I then ran it last night and this morning to let the installation calm down, then went about setting it up, and....er no! I got so fed up with it that I have now disconnected the lambda again and am going to let it run 'as is'. I don't have much more to test, and when the lambda is connected, the engine is always pulling back. I am thoroughly sick of it and now want it gone!
I have changed,
Blue sensor.
ECU.
ECU chips for various ones.
MAF sensor.
Throttle body.
Lambda probe.
Lambda relay.

The problem is definately fuel related. With any sensor disconnected, the ECU goes into 'safe' mode and the car work normally, albeit down on power. I don't have a fcuking clue what to look at next, although I am eying a box of matches on the fireplace with a glint in my eye.
Some people on here may suggest a rolling road set up, but that will not sort the problem. I need to fix the fundamental problem before putting it on a rolling road for fine tuning, otherwise I will be wasting money.
The ECU at the moment is running a standard chip, as it needs to run properly with this installed before I go and fit onother chip to suit the compressor set up. But, the engine hesitates up to about 4000rpm, then it seems to clear its throat and take off. And this happens suddenly as if someone has switched on the power. I am lost and pissed off!

Semi rant over! Apologies. :embarassed:

Mate, sign up to southerndubbers.com and PM a chap called TimG60 on there. Tell him I sent you and I reckon he might be able to help you out with diagnosing your problem. He built and runs a poop hot rallye and has just built a stonking G60 lump for a mates B3 syncro, he knows his stuff. He might be reasonably local to you as well as he lives in the southern area somewhere.

But I know the problem with yours, and its only a money and spares issue. Mine, I don't have a clue what to look at next. I could bang it into G-Werks or Jabbasport, but I think their hourly rates are very high.
I just want someone who knows these cars very well to come and give me a hand. I will pay them, but don't want to pay these specialists garages rates.
I'm getting a little desperate! :embarassed:

Does the car feel like it is driving in the wrong gear before it clears it throat?
If you hold the accelerator to the floor does it clear itself?

Yes, it clears itself as if someone had thrown a switch at a specific RPM, about 4500rpm. In 4th, that means about 100mph. I have to be going considerably faster than that to make 5th gear seem normal. Difficult with the way its behaving at the moment, but acheivable. :lipsrsealed:

does the g60 ecu work with vag com? would that help you atall?
Title: Re: The old b!tch...
Post by: Diamond Hell on 10 August 2009, 07:31
No, the Dogifant won't work with VAG-COM.

Sounds like it's almost time for you to nail Megasquirt on it.

At least then diagnosis would be a lot easier and you'd be able to tune it rather more effectively.

Have you put up a complete list of what you've replaced?

You have no idea how tempted I am! :embarassed:

DH, the list I put up earlier more or less captures it, although today I replaced the 1metre pipe from the plenum to the ECU. Danny mentioned the knock sensor. I have not replaced that yet.

Blue sensor.
ECU.
ECU chips for various ones.
MAF sensor.
Throttle body.
Lambda probe.
Lambda relay.

Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 11 August 2009, 00:14
Did it improve after fitting the lambda sensor temporarily?
My old Audi 100 did this, then it went back to what it was doing before.
The problem was the reverse of yours, it held back over 4200 rpm.
Another suggestion, does it rev cleanly when not under load?
You could stick a timing light on it to make sure the timing is advancing, could show up a knackered knock sensor?

People keep saying timing, and I will check it out, but I'm unconvinced.
I will be selling the car in due course to make way for a 7esque kitcar or a Porsche 911 to rebuild, but I need to sort out these niggles first and get the thing on the UK register. Thanks for your interest and I will be posting on here first before I advertise it anywhere else.
