Right, the valver is currently parked up since its got a " alledged " tappet / lifter issue.
I have been told by 5 people including 2 time served VW Techs that its the lifters, at least in one area.
but now 2 other people say it isnt, and could be a more serious engine issue.
So, I have options .
1, get all new lifters fitted either @ a garage of by one of the very nice men on here. - Costly option and wont neccesarilly fix the thing. :lipsrsealed:
2, use the set of lifters from my spare engine - was a known healthy engine on removal ( only got the guys word on this ) , cheaper than option one and if it DOES cure it i can always get new ones fitted at a later date.
3, get a set of lifters from elsewhere ( danny you still got them ? ) to prove the fault diagnosis as per option 2.
4, give up and break the fcuking thing
Awaits the abuse, and then the 3 or 4 helpful posts
-
I'd go with option 2 to start. It's the cheapest option (free!)
-
yeah, was the way i am heading, will stick a new cambelt and tensioner on mind, incase it cures it [finger crossing mod on ]
-
I would go with option 2.
Why not do the job yourself?
-
What other 'serious' issues could be afoot then? If they were serious, then the engine would have let go by now. If it was piston slap, then you would have a more prnounced sound at engine speed, but your problem is at half engine speed and tappets are hit at half engine speed.
If you are worried about your engine, then remove the oil filter and split it open. Remove the card element and open it out to look for debris. Then make your choice.
Having listened to the engine and knowing what I am talking about, I still say it's tappets, and tappets do get lazy and noisy with age.
-
One more thing. If you use used tappets on a different engine, you could cause camshaft wear as tappets wear into camshafts. You put these same tappets into another engine, the wear has to take place again, but in different places as no two items are identical.
You can fit new tappets to an existing camshaft, but if you require a replacement camshaft, you will need new tappets too.
-
as i said gents, after views, she i started her up today it was HORRIFIC.
did the oil filter thing last time, - nowt but i change the oil and filter every 6 months anyway

Well with the info now to hand, you could make an educated decision yourself. I think it would be a real shame to break a perfectly good car for the sake of a set of tappets.
You could fit the tappets from your spare engine purely as fault diagnoses, then if the fault is found, remove them and fit new ones. Free fault diagnoses without the prospect of spending un-necessary cash.
-
I agree with DPB. I also heard you're engine at the shady meet a few months back and it did sound like tappets.
Also, I'd do the job myself, not as complicated as you think and much more satisfying than watching someone do it.
-
just out of curiosity, whats wrong with your spare engine? could you not fit that?
-
Fit the spare tappets as diagnosis.
I think camshaft damage would be very unlikely, certain in the short term...
-
option 5:
give it to a garage and tell them to fix the bloody thing regardless of cost instead of moaning about it :afro:
-
IMO
hydralic tappets are to be fair to them very reliable littel animals, very rarely do they suddenly fail and they tend to develop indevidualy.
the fact that the whole lot have suddenly decided to fail very quickly makes me wonder what caused them to fail, the same goes for camshafts it is very uncommon to get a sudden failure of all the lobes on or two will go.
the question is is the cylinder head actualy getting any oil as that is the only thing that is coommon to everything
-

I was just going to throw that one in there  clearly just throw the other one in than the removed engine could be rebuilt in the garage by yourself
-
Chuck in the spare engine is what I'd do to.
Nick
-
Khare, - IF i could do the job mesen, trust me I would, and simple as increasing tyre pressures for track days maybe
DPB - Option 2 was a trial free fix - is successful then new ones would be purchased
Danny, its gradually got worse over time ( like 2 years ) and been advised not to drive to much incase the lifter goes completely and takes out the camshaft lobe  as said they think its 2 if not 3 in one area ( but noise travels )
Chris - Funds mate - funds :lipsrsealed:
A8quat - i dont think the cams are damaged, i just dont want a failure of a lifter lifting to lobe damage - and as per Khare, if a medical condition alllowed, trust me i would be doing it mesen - as i do with 95 % of other jobs I do on mine and other cars / bikes.
Johnson, Robbed for spares and a snapped manifold stud flush :lipsrsealed:
Horney, spare engine fitemnt isnt an option, and DH wouldnt talk to me again, ABF will be sourced if i rmove the lump as a last resort.
Option 2 is purely to clarify the fault. if it cures my issues then i will just fit all new lfiters ready for sale,
Adam - you know , we discussed it before  and are you going wednesday - DCO meet ?
-
BTW Passat looks awesome in your sig mate!
Nick
-
cheers nick, piccy taken this morning after musical wheels again, golf looks good on the G60s and the 45 profile suit it more than the 'sat
-

Nick
I used to have one of them, a GT 16v. The wife wrote it off
-
I had a GT 16v as well but the tin worm got it.

Going back to op's original problem.
I would definately suggest fitting a spare set of tappets to see if the problem goes away.
-
Adam - you know , we discussed it before  and are you going wednesday - DCO meet ?
 yea possibly mate, see how it goes, I dont mind it at DCO as most are quite friendly but some are a bit strange I must say and are not very forthcoming to talk
You going mate?
-

option 2 .
Adam, thinking about it, and I am accustomed to no cnut talking to me
-

Some people might just fit the other engine and be happy with the result.
Just call Danny and set the date, then drop by mine on the set date with a spare Toledo 16V.
-
and here he is, Cheers for your input
Option 2 it is, if it cures it then i shall replace all the tappets for new,
as i know the engine pulls well and gave good bhp on the rolling road
-
HOW long have you been whining about these bloody tappets?
-
8 months - ever since i removed the sub an amp
-
How about another option - instead of swapping the tappets or the engine why not just swap the head. No probs then with different tappets and cam giving excessive wear.
-
That's rather a lot more money though.
-
and my hspare head has a snapped stud - as posted earlier
-
Forget the golf, i want that passat
-
Option 2 ftw
-
Is there no way that snapped stud would come out?
-
I'd try 2 or 3 first. Time consuming but cheap.
-
I'd have to say go with option 2, atleast then you know where you stand
or option 6, drop in the abf on digi 3 and never look back!
-
Forget the golf, i want that passat
cheers matey, its not helping having that, lost interest in the golf :lipsrsealed:
-
Put an ABF in it.
-
well if you've lost intrest in it and it's f**ked you may as well give it to me
-
He's right.
Give the Golf to Danny.
-
-
If it's being given away then i'll gladly take it
