Title: bye bye mk 5 ...hello mk 6
Post by: adw555 on 28 July 2009, 12:03
Changed my 05 GTI for a new mk 6 yesterday. Very happy...had 4 1/5 years of great fun in the mk5 and the new one seems just as good and somewhat better and a nicer place to be inside....was sad to see the old one go...still looked like new after all that time.

...although the new one no longer sounds quite like a diesel at tickover

Maybe seeya over in the mk 6 section

Id say its a pretty safe bet that it is if its an 05 model.

Mine is also an 05 model and sounds like a diesel on tickover, has been since I owned it (1 year 4 months). From what I have read its nothing to worry about and Im not spending loads of money to try and fix something that isnt broken.

Thanks Alan.''yes'' mate mine is an 05 model.I was just abit concernd about any long term damage etc?.Car runs great just the rattle on tick over when warm.

yea, it was march 05 and was the AXX engine. Sounded like a diesel at tick over from the day it was new.....50k miles later sounded the same. Never had any problems with it what so ever and it loosened up about 30k miles and was running really well...so might just have been a characteristic of that early engine.

How does the MKVI feel compared to MKV?

Im considering scraping my MKV because I hate it so much, worst car I've ever owned (owned fords, volvos, audis).
The rattles are insane and the build quality is rediculous. Has that changed or will I be better off in an Audi perhaps ..

....The Mk6 GTI feels much more detached to drive - You can hardly hear the engine/exhaust due to the new soundproofing and the ride is very smooth. The interior feels far more Audi-esque and luxurious and the doors close much more 'luxuriously'. Handling is good. Brake pedal response is just as woolly as before.

But I much prefer a GTI to feel more taut and tactile to drive - I want to feel more contact with what's going on - Hence my modifications.

Linky : - GTI Mk6 Review.... (http://mk6.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=51.0) < I can't remember if I also posted this on this site too.

But if you hate your Mk5 so much I can't see why you'll like this new GTI Mk5.5.

The MKV is a blast to drive, I love it on small roads, and the torque is .. well .. you know .. "good". That is why I still keep it.

However, I also want a comfortable cruiser that will let me eat mile after mile (which I do most of the time). With all the rattles and squeaks going in my MKV which I mostly drive on rough asphalt I really can't say that I'm enjoying it.

It's 28 months old and at 36 I'll be looking for a replacement. The question is, is the MKVI GTI the car for me? I must say I love the looks of it.

If it's new mate take it VW and get them to fix all the rattles under warranty. Mines a very early one and is completley silent!

have only had my mk 6 for 3 days but the difference in the quality of the interior is huge....my mk 5 did have a few rattles for the whole 4 years...usually more pronounced first thing in the morning!...the 6 is rattle free so far.

It also makes a nice noise when accelerating. I was a bit worried after hearing the 'it's too quiet' comments..but mine sounds nicer and has a deeper growl than my mk 5....strange...but hey I' m happy

....Only if you drive through a tunnel or with the windows down! It's so quiet inside the car on tickover that you don't know if you've turned on the ignition

But the most important is as you say, that you are the one who is happy :afro:  :afro:

Have to agree with adw555 on this one... the mk6 gti sounds alot better than the mk5. RR you sure you not comparing to your quads rather than the std twins??

But Remember robin, your car isnt standard and the Mk5 standard car is simular to its new model. Some people prefer a quieter ride, and would prefer the mk6 especially when it comes to wind and road noise, which is also greatly approved in the new model.

....Perhaps I've forgotten how quiet the stock Mk5 exhaust is! Afterall, I've had my Milltek Non-Res since 2005 (albeit in a variety of formats).

R32UK - There'll doubtless be some difference between quad and twin pipe sounds but it's very subtle.

Either way, I personally want to hear my engine/exhaust all the time, motorways included, so I'm critical of the Mk6. From what you guys are saying, the Mk6 will sound very good on a TBE aftermarket system and better than a Mk5.

Stock exhaust isn't quiet in my experience.  Mine has got louder over the years and most don't believe its how it came out the factory. Perfect for me, nice roar when accelerating, and quiet when cruising

+1 Mine sounds spot on and it's the original exhaust. Infact i'd be worried about upgrading to milltek or similar just because i'm so happy with how it currently sounds really wouldn't want it any louder/quieter

....But if you are going to start "tinkering" and get a remap, you'll need an aftermarket performance exhaust such as a Milltek. But, the Resonated version isn't what I call loud anyway.

....I expect that their (Milltek manufactured) Hi-flow+Downpipe (TBE) version would be louder though. Wouldn't you exploit your remap better with a TBE?
