I`ve always used mer car shampoo,it helps repel the rain,i find it much better than the auto glym car shampoo, hopefully if it stays dry i`ll seal the polish with auto glym gold sealant.

Hi, correct me if I wrong but I thought we were not supposed to polish a new car until 12 weeks have passed or something? This is to ensure no damage is done to the lacquer(sp?)?
Title: Re: Finally stopped raining
Post by: simonpolly on 27 July 2009, 21:18
news to me,says on the bottle can be used on new paint,i just applied it and buffed it off.I doubt that is true as it would`nt be much cop if the paint was so easily damaged, what about bird sh!t and washing the car they would be more harmfull. And what about the protection the vw dealers offer how would they do that ?

Gorgeous car! Maybe newer paints are better these days... ho ho ho
Title: Re: Finally stopped raining
Post by: simonpolly on 27 July 2009, 21:30
That may apply to a respray, probably not a good idea to use a polish with any cut in it on new paint work, sealants are fine as they have no cut they just seal the paint.Polished my touran from new and still looks perfect 4 years on.

Post by: gizzywizzy on 27 July 2009, 22:15
Me too, I've not seen any around this area of North Yorkshire so maybe I'm going to be the first.  I'm having mine treated by the dealers with some products which are supposed to give it a gleam and help to keep the dirt down, they wanted to charge me £250 but when I pointed out how much I was spending on the car anyway they threw it in for free!!  If you're paying for that to be done it seems a bit exorbitant for a job you could do yourself.

Anyway your car is looking a real gem keep enjoying it.

Agreed. Your car is beautiful, but I'm really surprised you polished it already. Wax yes, polish no! Polish works by removing the top coat and should only be used when the paint starts to dull, i.e. after a couple of winters. Also, you will inevitably create swirl marks, which is the bugbear of black cars, as they are more visible than on other colours.

It was auto glym deep shine for dark cars, says"for new or moderate paintwork" on the label,so i`ll sue auto glym if any problems, looks better and repels rain far better than when i picked it up,i did`nt rub like a loony i just applied it by hand and buffed it off. :undecided:Going to read the handbook now to see what they say.

Post by: simonpolly on 28 July 2009, 12:51
The Handbook just says to wax the car,and if you use a polish make sure you wax it after no mention of the 12 week mark,Auto glym deepshine is both, but more of a wax than polish(ALSO SAYS IT PREVENTS SWIRLS),auto glym red is what you use if  the paintwork has gone dull, that has more cut but also contains wax.I`ve Used auto glym on my touran and  the 13 year old astra that i scrapped, the astra`s paintwork was often commented on by passers by who whould say how amazing it looked for a 13 year old car,it truly looked like it had been resprayed. To be honest i`d not really thought about wax and polish being different, but i see your point now. When i get chance i`m going to seal the paintwork with auto glym gold which is purely a sealant/wax.

I wouldn't worry about it, one polish isn't going to ruin your paintwork. It's just that it's not something I would do on my own car, especially if it were black :)

Never thought of polish and wax as different products to be honest but i see your point, just watched auto glym video on there site, says you can use deep shine on new paint work and  it prevents all those little niggles with black paint,But i`m just going to seal it from now on because you`ve put doubt in my mind, will i come out one morning and all the paint has dropped off ?

Lol, women just can't understand this talking about cars/publishing pix on the Internet business, can they? :)

I feel guilty now about stressing you out re. the polish. DON'T WORRY, I'm sure you haven't done any damage.

Excellent interior, congrats on NOT getting the boring, plasticky and expensive leather. I sat in a GTD this morning and the cloth seats are so superior in every way. Also congrats on the upgraded audio. Love the way they've integrated the tweeters into the A pillar :)

Now stop thinking about your ruined clear coat and go out and drive the damned car :D

Cheers, great pics Simon.

I think you are the first person i have seen with the Dynaudio and the DAB. Is the sound quality noticably better than the MKV as i have ordered both too?

So glad i have gone for the cloth seats over the leather, i love them!!!

Sound quality is good,i`ve never been in a mk5 so don`t know how they compare, the dab is cd quality or better i`ve driven about 250 miles and only once did i lose reception for about 2 seconds,it just says no coverage no loud hissing i was abit concerned i`d be driving along with the dab up loud and suddenly it would go off and just make a very loud hiss

Oh right thought it was about the deep shine,as for the leather i`ve had leather before in a 205 gti i had and to be honest it looked and felt far better quality than the v.w leather in the golf mk6 gti,the leather interior just did`nt look all that imo,i actually prefered the cloth which saved me £1675,each to there own i suppose.Be abit of a boring world if we all thought the same.
Title: Re: Finally stopped raining
Post by: FroGTI on 28 July 2009, 17:28
Advantages of leather on the MkVI GTI:

- looks classy from a distance
- it smells nice for about 3 weeks

Disadvantages of leather on the MkVI GTI:

- it costs a fortune
- it looks like immitation leather close up
- it's cold in the winter
- it's hot in the summer
- it's slippery all year round
- VW stretch their leather too much, making the seats (even) harder
- it requires regular maintenance (creams & cleaners) to keep it supple
- even with regular maintenance, the driver's side bolster will crack after a few months
- the leather used on the driver's seat will sag and/or stretch after only a few weeks
- it doesn't look sporty

Title: Re: Finally stopped raining
Post by: neilgcal on 28 July 2009, 17:41
Although i do like the leather i have chosen the cloth as i didnt want black leather. If they had offered more choice with colours or you could get the side bolsters etc in the same colour as the car then i may have gone for it.

I also think on the black leather they should have had red stiching to match the steering wheel, handbrake and gear stick, but i guess thats just a me thing and being overly fussy!

Noticing from your pics of the interior (which looks out of this world by the way) that there are no red piped floor mats.  I am sure I read somewhere in the VW literature that the mats had red piping or maybe it was all a dream

you're welcome to try that, but an internet search engine from the comfort of my own home is somewhat easier, quicker and more likely to be successful.  our golf gtis aren't THAT common (yet!)

Good points on both sides. I always pixelate my plates just in case my insurers and/or VW browse these forums looking for people who have modded their cars and/or invalidated their warranties.

Yes you could do that, but all you can do is try and avoid it by blanking them. My sisters TT got cloned and it was a f**king nightmare !
