it should also have door speakers? (the dash is for tweeters) and if not find a scrap yard and buy the lower door pockets and fit some decent 165mm in there

The dash are tweeters, as per Mr. Bradley there says. Mind you, under my grills I have the crossovers from my components and my tweeters in there. The door speakers are 6.5", you can either buy a set of coaxial speakers (tweeter and woofer made as one) or buy a set of components (separate tweeter to woofer).

Components are a much better option and offer you much better sound especially when amped :)

dash size is 10cm (4"???) and doors are 17cm (6.5")

Alternatively you can by some tiny 4" Woofers, to move your bass up front. I know i had some fitted in my t4 van which has similar size hole, you'll need an encolosure of sometipe, i resorted to taking a yougurt pot, big onken one, cutting it down and covering in some fibergass resin and wading. little 4" subs are rare but option worth considing. bit of wasted space when you can mount your tweeters anywhere. I mounted my tweets in pillar, it think the pillar plastic i butchered was audi 80, but can't remember now. When scrapyards were the place to rummage and find something to do the job rather than being shown to one particular car!

Indeed the less specced models got approx 10cm sized speakers in them where as the higher specced models get propper tweeters there and mid basses in the doors

10cm is 4 inch they are not 4" in the dash a 4" will not fit as the hole is only big enough for a 3.5"

I am trying to remove my dash speakers in my 1.4 - there are grills in the front doors for speakers, (and I will put some there soon) but I need to get the tweeters out in the dash to replace one thats blown (seems pointless leaving it in there and just putting door speakers in) - but there are no screws for the dash speakers once i've taken te grid mesh off?

If I can't get them out, I will use brute force, but obviously, i'd rather not....

cheers for the replys, got some components for the doors and some crossover boxes to set it all up, got some mental 400watt 3.5" but they are too deep for passenger side :( so just got originals at moment, got one side all soldered up, not as hard as i thought to thread speaker cable through bulk head, rather easy actually!

Just for info - you can fit 10cm mid tweeters in the dash and possibly a little larger say 13cm.

Update: Yes, i've managed to pry them out, it was a bit tight... lol.  I'm from a world of Peugeots, so you should understand my point mow, things literry fall off them, well my 205GTi wasnt the tightest of rides, until i got a skip brown phase 1 suspension kit on it, then it was a proper little go kart, lol.

Thanks grim reaper, I was tugging and tugging, thinking uh oh somethings going to go ping, or SNAP soon

Len- I had a white G plate 1989 1,6. It had OMP 4 points, phase 1 skip brown suspension (god like handling, transformed the car instantly) Cobra black bucket seats, 1,9 wheels, yoko a539 (not good in the wet, the a520 were much nicer when I had them), stripped out rear, k+n, power boost valve, and a 3.5 group N exhaust, saxo vtr style rear spoiler (it looked OK, but it was on the car when I got it so I didnt want to take it off), I also converted the fog lights so both worked.  It was good for 130.  Not sure the filter or valve helped, as they were on the car when I got it.

Before it was stripped out, I had 2x10 subs, 2 amps, sony head unit/cd changer. it was pushing out about 1600w before the amp's did their work...

I blew a coil in one of the subs, so I stripped it all out and enjoyed the burble of the engine instead lol...

I wanted to get the Mi16 in it, but funds never allowed and then I settled down, wife and 2 sons to think about now, hence the slug 1.4 5dr golf  LOL.

it does have good mpg though...

Oh, a little update.  the speaker is intermittant, most of the time it doesnt work, occasionally it does but it crackles.

So I guess i've blown the coil... oopsy  The wires are all intact the speaker end, not taken the head unit out to check the connections there but i'm 99% sure its the speaker.

Stock speakers and a lot of volume, not a good combination.

I'm ordering up some pioneer 100w 10cm speakers today, £20. they'll do for what I need.

Later on i'll get some in the doors as all 4 have blanking grills/pods, ready for some speakers.

the door speakers are really easy to get in, i have just done mine, make sure you get some crossover boxes so you can set the sound up properly, they are real easy, you will have an input, then an output for treble, mid and bass or just tweeter and woofer. so worth it for the few quid they cost and you get them with most component sets :)

thanks, i've had components before when I was in my mid 20s and had a decent car to put them in (205GTi) but for now, I settled with some kenwood 110w 10". £20, bargain

maybe later if I get the ICE bug again, i'll get something meatier
