Anybody got a rough price a back street garage will charge to change my 02a gearbox
over as ive just got a replacement with the driveshafts still attached....
its a mk3 16v
:undecided:
just wondering how much i need to save...
-
Think you might find that prices will vary a bit.
I had my 020 box replaced last week whilst i was on holiday (very quick turnaround) and that came to £250 all in, unfortunatly i didnt have the time to shop around so i cannot say if that is a bad price or not, although to me it doesnt sound to far off.
-
Thats how much it usually costs just to replace a clutch, so that is a good deal.
-
I've just been quoted £160+vat to replace the 02a in my 16v.
-
Around £150 to £250 really, not that hard to do.
-
Is that including the price of the box?

no that will be labour only
-
dude change the box yourself, its piss easy :-D
just remove the shafts of yuor new box and that makes it even more easier

Yes,Ive got a box ready to go in...
would i need to remove the driveshafts on the car to stick the new box in or
can i just unbolt them at the gearbox end?
-
I remember getting mine done a few years ago for around £200 mark (including gearbox but they kept the old one)

haha i just had a look and your like 4 hours from us. never mind :P

you can remove the shafts from the gearbox, which is what i just said to you to do!!! iirc, there are 8 torx bolts that you will most likely round off if you dont use the correct size lol, but you can always bash a bigger size into it (ive done this 3 times now due to correded ones)...shafts will then pull off, then there are a few bolts that you need to remove to get the box off (iirc there are 4 19mm's and 1 10m but i cant remember off hand!)..before you remove the gearbox or the shafts remove the starter motor which is 3 bolts and keep it to a side...and also remove the clutch cable, its got that plastic hook thing on the end which keeps the cable from going through its protective sheeth thingy...its an easy peasy job, 3 hours max really
-
...and also remove the clutch cable
The 02a in the 16v has a hydraulic clutch

Thanks for that.....
will probably have a go when the rain finally stops
mine grinds in 2nd and 3rd which is very annoying.
If i sit on the drive with the engine running it goes into 1st fine but grinds into 2nd(does that sound like the gearbox?)..the clutch is quite new
-
before fitting a new box change the oil to some good synthetic stuff (you might need a motorsport supplier?) as these can sort lots of issues with the 020 boxes
-
mine is a 02a gearbox..
ive got 2 litre of castrol driveline syntrax which i was gonna try first....
is that ok?
-
I'm thinking of changing my box, not to hard.... Just fiddly.
-
Anybody know what size the hex bolts are on the driveshafts?

Yes, thats good stuff.
-
thanks....
Just need to try and get the topup nut off...it aint shifting at all
maybe i need a better hex socket as the one from halfords is a crap fit...
-
topnut, you mean on the shock??? you dont have to do anything with suspension man :/
and the gearbox bolts are not hex, they are torx ones so be careful with what you do man

I meant the 17mm on the front of the gearbox for putting the oil back in...
I said the top one as its a lot higher than the drain plug :)
-
oh right :o lol
as for halfrauds toolkits, if your using the multifit ones then they are crap and yes, they are a crap fit, if you use the deep sockets they are proper hex shaped, and wont round the bolt off like the other ones
