I looking to get a golf 1.8 t gti soon, but i thought id research alittle before hand.
I want to know ur thoughts and views on the engine and car, as in if its reliable ? and if it has caused you many problems ?,
Are the parts on the car build to last a while or are they just like the french rubish i own at the mo made to fall apart after 30k miles lol :sick:.
Any veiws would be great

Mk4 = bomb proof
-
jonnyturbo = tempted fate :grin:
-
Honda CTR = bomb proof.
1.8 T's can be very tempremental indeed. :(
I'd still pick a Mk4 over a CTR, though! ;)

AGU FTW :laugh:
I second that!!

love them they go on forever if treated well an looked after :)

I look at it like this.. they are no more problematic than any other engine, but any faults are usually easily recognised because it is such a well known motor and parts are easy to come by. There's enough info on here and other forums to make a lot of the jobs that may need doing a DIY task. The endless tuning options are an obvious advantage to speedfreaks like me.
Yeah, I think I am emotionally attached to the 1.8T engine :embarassed:

AUM + k03s FTW... oh hang on, didn't mine come with a K03s already bolted on...ahem... :lipsrsealed:
As for the mk4 1.8T, they have quite a few minor electrical things that tend to go wrong, but are generally easily & cheaply fixed, plus they are all "known" problems and thus easy to find and rectify.
As for the engine itself, they are indeed bomb-proof, as long as they are looked after and serviced well then you shouldn't see any catastophic problems tbh.

i would agree with ivormk4 and say there tempremental. never had these probs with any of my cars, although my mk2 and 3 golfs were also tempremental, however i love the car and the drive so thats why i still have the golf :smiley:
-
meh - 1.9 TDI FTW
you don't hear of as many problems as those pesky petrol engines :tongue:

Totall agree with the bomb proof statement, although i would hve the CTR over the Mk4 golf every time. In saying that i do like my golf, just think the CTR is better :)
-
AGU-FTW!! MMM how many vac leaks compared to aum..

I needed the money, having a wife and 2 kids. My money is as easy to keep as trying to catch water pouring through a seive :)
I wanted a fun car but at half the price so got a 1.8T.

They all have annoying little faults I did like my MK4 though only major thing I had to do was 2 front wheel bearings and front wishbones.

That's the turbocharger, I believe.

The KO4 wasn't found in any Golf, it's originally from the Mk1 S3 & Mk1 Cupra R. ;)

oh, and to answer the o.p.'s question - get one, tune it, love it - i owned a mk1 gti for 10yrs, 2 x corrados (inc. a vr),a couple of mk2's and there is no way in hell i'd go back to an old dub - the mk4 is just so refined and tuneable..only thing i'll be swapping it for in the future is a mk5 gti! long live the turbodub :cool:
-
im happy with mine but iam only 4-5 months into the mk4 1.8t . but i have been hit with the mod stick and have spent around £1100 allready lol on just extras and the m.0.t :wink: lots and lots more to come!!!!
